I have a US NTSC SNES here I want to mod for universal playback. Not just Japanese, but PAL as well.
I've done the slot mod for the japanese import capability. I've also done a switched mod for the SNES lockout chip, so it can be enabled and disabled at will.
Is that it? Or is a 50/60Hz mod necessary as well?
I've no PAL games right now, plus I have a feeling that some games may need one mod, and not the other. Anyone know *for sure*?

here is how to do it, but, I have no idea if you need to do it.
I'm wondering if you can use it like the 50/60 mod on the Genesis...

Later PAL releases contain code to check whether the SNES is running at 50hz video mode or 60hz video mode.
If you do not have a 50/60hz switch in your US NTSC SNES, it is permenantly running at 60hz and the game will refuse to play (gives a message on screen)
So basically you'll need a 50/60hz switch for the later PAL releases.
Then when you have the switch, just set to 50hz, put the game in, turn on, let it load, then switch to 60hz.
Hope this helps! 8-)

so it does work like the Genesis mod, I'll have to give it a try,
was there was some good PAL only released games?

Well IIRC, Terranigma is top on the list of US gamer's PAL fantasies LOL

if a game was pal only, it's probably a good idea to play it in 50hz.. switching between 50 and 60 changes the gameplay speed too.. so itll only play at the propper speed on the rate it was designed for.

That's only the case for the handful of titles that were PAL-optimised (Mario Kart springs to mind). The VAST majority of PAL SNES games weren't optimised, and at 50Hz they run 17% slow and with massive great borders. The "propper" speed for most games is still 60Hz.

in order to make a snes universal you need to do 3 things
1.rewire the lockout (not just pulling the leg somewhere in the forum someone discovered how to make ALL games to work always by looping the correct lockout software code from a pin on the mb)
2. install a 50/60 switch to toggle the bypass for some games like metroid. (not sure about this game but it nags on my SF7)
3. physicaly alter the case (1 of 2)
A. (on US consoles)
remove the tabs that are on the inside of the port itself to prevent games from reaching the connector
B. (on PAL console)
Carve in the casing to allow NTSC carts to fit they are wider then pal carts
final notes
Europe and Jap consoles look alike but Jap emit NTSC signals.
also US snes2 doesnt have RGB outputs ive done one of these installs and the one at gamesx is crappy explained ill try to make a better blueprint once i get some time.

the Propper speed for most games IS NOT 60Hz as the snes cpu doesnt run on 60Hz the 50/60Hz is the tv sync and most games are programed to perform something called Vertical Sync to adapt the games to whatever speed the PPU is running on

There is a guy that is making a SNES mod that automatically switches the lockout chip and video mode during SNES boot. Scroll down on this page to the article titled " great news, as always :>":
http://bof2.blogspot.com/
The great thing about this is that you don't have to worry about flipping a switch. Just plug in your game and everything is done automatically for you. It also means that the external case of the SNES doesn't have to have holes drilled in it for the lockout and video switches. Lets just hope he decides to sell pre-modded SNESs. I prefer the Super Famicom and Euro SNES shape of the SNES too. It feels sturdier and the various SNES copiers fit ontop of that shape better than the USA shape.

That is a very neat BIOS mod. Much like a Universe BIOS mod to a NEO GEO, it does away with switches, so you can control everything in software, in an accessible BIOS menu.
Damned cool. 8-)
