I just thought of something awesome... is it possible to set up a dreamcast LAN? I never got a chance to try out SegaNet and now, of course, it is impossible to do so. I wonder, though, what if you could get a bunch of DCs linked up via broadband (or maybe via modem??) and have a blast... the next best thing to SegaNet!! Can it be done? Or can I only dream? Anyone know more about this?

Dream. BBA's would be needed, and there is no software support.

and from my understanding the BBA's are pricey.

BBA's are about 100 each. Technically it would be possible w/ dialup, b/c someone already wrote linux drivers for the dreamcast modem.

Yes, You can make a DC network and NO you don't have to have BBA's to make it work. Google a bit and your gonna get the setup.

The big problem is that most of the "net" games require server software which hasn't been available to the public. The only two games I'm aware of that you can do a DC LAN with are PSO (with the homebrewed PSO server) and Quake 3 (which you can setup a PC to be the server with the right version number maybe just a DC too, but the player count is probably limited then). No clue about Unreal Tournament.

Nope UT has not been possible b/c the server that lists the games has been shutdown.

PSO server works pretty damn well btw. And it does something the original didn't, allow pc users to play w/ DC users.

Terrible misinformation.

Please people, before "answering" a member's post, try to know what you're talking about. If you're guessing or speculating at least say that's what you're doing. It kills me to think that this guy could have read that, went somewhere else with the same question and got an informed answer. It doesn't help the quality of this community whatsoever.

Good luck with your project, mario2butts. I'd love to see it work. This may be a good place to start:

IF I remember correctly, some fo the tricks that were used to create a Player VS player for some of the dreamcast games, particularly Sega Swirl, was using POP Email. Pretty effective when its a turn based game.

I understand some of the browsers support v3 of Flash, and v1 of Java. This also builds an opportunity for dreamcast targeted web development. It would be much easier to build a web base community for dreamcast(system) than would be to write a server/client from scratch.

On a related subject, this thread got me interested in the possibility of running a lan'd PSO server. I found this site, which features server software and a forum filled with info. I can't say anything good/bad about any of it, since I just bumped into it today (but like I said, it seemed related to the subject at hand).

In an occasion at home we made a Quake III Arena Dreamcast vs PC tournament. Two Dreamcasts, 1 PC, 2 DC BBAs and a router. It was great :)
