Every Monday, a member of the MAME club will pick a new game for you to play in MAME! All you have to do to participate is install MAME, download the ROM of the week from this message, and then post your thoughts about the game! You can post a full review of the game or simply tell us what you liked/didn't like about the game. Have you played this game before? Have you played it in an actual arcade? Do you like the genre? How did it run on your computer? Did you beat it? If so, how long did it take? What was your high score? How far can you get? Did you have any problems emulating the game? When writing your review, post it right here in the sticky topic and include any thoughts you have about the game. Remember, YOU are the reviewer. Let us know anything and everything you think about the game! Just remember, if you want people to respond during YOUR week, you should play along on OTHER weeks!

Well, this is my pick for the week, so I'll start the ball rolling.

This was a game that I never saw in the arcades back in the 80's and only found on MAME later. I don't think it was extremely popular, but it is quite fun. It also has some great parallax scrolling that was groundbreaking for the time (1982). As KLOV points out, it predates Choplifter, and it seems like this game might be at least part of the inspiration for it.

The controls are unique too. It uses two 8-way joysticks, one for movement and one for firing, but also has a bomb button too! Needless to say, I'm not great with the controls, but I still enjoy the game.

I pretty much suck at this game and can't get much past the third mission (where the subs start to appear). Rank: Private

BTW, this is the part where all you people who have PM'ed me recently about joining the MAME Club (along with the dozens of members already on the list) download the ROM and say something about the game.

I wasn't expecting this to be so charming and addictive, but by golly, I can't put it down.

Without a two-stick controller, the controls definitely take some getting used to, but they're ultimately very manageable.

The graphics, as mentioned above, must've been groundbreaking for the time. I can definitely see why. They still hold up well today. The cool little details - such as people yelling help as they're drowing or the way they fall back down if they don't pick them up from the water properly - are also a hoot. A lot of time and love obviously went into the crafting of this game. Too bad it's not very widely known or remembered today.

Games like this are why I love the DP MAME Club so much. It's always awesome to discover a hidden gem, and Rescue is definitely that.

Wow, this is incredibly well-polished really. You can kill the guys in any number of ways, such as your blades hitting them on their way down...hitting the water, or other copters, kills you..great sense of "works like it should". And the graphics on the background are freakin awesome, they gave a real sense of depth to the point that it looked like some kind of sterogram or something, dunno if that's intended, an effect they used, or my monitor/eyes messing with me.

However, I am terrible at this. Horrible at this game right here. I can definetly see the appeal though, and amybe someday I'll be better at it. Great choice.

Also, sorry i haven't been getting to these as much as i should. I feel bad, like i chose my game and ran. That isn't intentional, just that somehow all my time keeps getting eaten by other things. I barely get my leauge scores in on time. I was tempted to run back through the weeks I missed, but I dunno if bumping those topics is something that would be welcome or not.

never saw this one before.

I agree, for it's time, it is very advanced. the backgrounds rock. I keep looking at it thinking "wow". it definitely creates a 3D atmosphere.

gameplay is solid and well thought out. I agree, the many ways to die or for the little parachute guy to die makes for a realistic game.

all in all, a cool game and one I am surprised I missed.

That's why I like this site. Someone always manages to dig a game out of obscurity and bring it into the light for others. I have never laid eyes on this game before.
This game is from the 80s no doubt, but it is simply gorgeous when compared to the games released that year. 1982 my butt. This game showed off some great programming tricks. It's damn hard though. Those red choppers are definitely piloted by satan himself. Colorful graphics and nice little touches like killing the people with your blade make this game neat. I still can't believe the cool scrolling effect.

Hard to believe this came before Choplifter, because it is a much more complex (and in my opinion) better game than Choplifter. This game is truly two handfuls of difficult.

With my keyboard, I can make it to level 2, I remember years ago playing with my old PC controller, and doing much much better with that.

An excellent, and very underrated game.
