I was just sitting here when I happened to look down at the floor. There they sat. The two fighters form one of the biggest boxing matches ever to be found in the gaming arena. Funny enough, only in death (console death that is) could they get along. My wife happened to be playing the two last night (Sega 6 Pak and Super Mario All-Stars) and I hadn’t put them away yet.
What great systems, what great times. I consider the 16-bit generation to be the great “Golden Age” of gaming. Some of the best games ever made played in those two systems and I think they deserve our respect (not that I feel respect isn’t given around here, there’s a serious amount of to be found) I know this is nothing new nor is it some great revelation, it’s just an older gamer feeling nostalgic and wanting to show it to his DP friends.
Long live the SNES, long live the genesis!!! (and hopefully, long live the rest of us)

god bless it indeed.
Pretty much the same feeling you get when you see a PS2 and a GameCube sitting next to each other...because when you have both...arguements, differences, etc. Do not matter anymore in the comfort of your own home.
the 16-bit era is forever eternal.

When I first opened this thread, I was expecting to see pictures of some insane home-made machine that could play SNES and Genesis games...
dammit.
But still, the 16-bit era was absolutely fantastic. I miss it terribly. tear.

LOL Me too!
I agree that the sixteen bit generation is/was the Golden Age of video games.
sometimes I reflect on how games are now to how they were then and seriously miss the days when a new game Really meant a new game in all aspects. So very few of them now and days.

that's what I originally thought too. Oh well, it was a great time though, yet I think the NES/SMS war was way more heated :)

Ummmm... if by "heated" you mean "not a war at all", then yes. Seriously - that was the ONLY generation in console gaming where there was no battle at all. Even PSX had the hype of the N64, the <s>fanboys of the</s> Saturn, the last great era of the PC, and the Dreamcast at the way end to contend with.
Unless you're European, where for some reason the Master System was a bit more accepted.

Maybe he was thinking in terms of games. Both the NES and SMS had great stuff in the '80s even though the market share difference was enormous.
Anyway, I like the pic in the first post. All it needs is a TG16. ;)

The 16-bit era is one of my favourites, yet at the end of it all, I don't feel much love for the Genesis/Mega Drive.
Back in the day, I had nothing against - I was even prepared to buy one. Shopping for my first console in 1995, I couldn't care less which one I got. I simply went with the SNES because the majority of my friends had one, and I figured I could sponge games off them.
I did play Mega Drive though - Sonic 2 being one of the most significant games.
Yet looking back, it's the SNES that I love, and the Mega Drive that I don't.
Everything about the SNES has the "anything Sega can do, I can do better" thing about it.
I could count all the Mega Drive games that I love on two hands, yet I'd need a page to list all my SNES favourites.
Oh, and that picture once again highlights the ugliness of the US SNES compared to the competition.

I don't think there will ever be an era that matches the 16-bit era. Like I've mentioned before...I was obsessed with the SNES, and still am too. It's my favorite system by far. I never really liked the Genesis all that much except for the Sonic games, which are some of my favorite platformers of all time.
I used to get really mad during the 16-bit days when Sega would have those commercials on TV that bashed the SNES...making fun of how "slow" it was compared to the Genesis. Yet, when you compared everything else such as graphics, sound, color, and overall quality of games...the SNES dominated.

Like others, I agree, this was probably my favorite era. But real tough call I love the 8 bit NES a whole lot too! I had both, but the Genesis was strictly for sports games for me, everything else on SNES.
I think the peripheral that has given me the most joy ever came from this era, Tee Vee golf on the Genesis with the golf club..... those were the days!

“Hi, my name is Jon and I’m a former SNES fanboy.” I confess to the room.
“Hi Jon.” The group replies.
“Yep, you heard it, I used to blindly hate the Genesis for no reason. Sure, the Sega Ad campaigns were a bit lame and the graphics weren’t always up to par with the SNES but why did I hate the Genesis? Simply put I was a sucker. I bought into the hype promoted by magazines (and commercials) and actually believed that owning a Genesis was a sin.”
“For shame Jon, for shame.” Again, the group replies.
“I used to be a serious SNES fan boy. I would always take toe time to tell a Genesis owner how crappy their system was by pointing out every flaw in the Genesis’s performance when compared to the superior SNES. Words like “color pallet”, “better sound” and “mode 7” were often spewed but the biggest one was Final Fantasy III and it’s 256 colors on screen. Simply put, I was an ass. I was a die-hard Nintendo fan (in many ways I still am) and I would NEVER own a Sega system, no way, no how. About five or so years ago it dawned on me, “What in the hell is wrong with the Genesis anyway?” The answer, nothing. I had bought into the hype that was spewed so many years ago and had never let go. They’re freaking video game systems for crying out loud! To hate an inanimate piece of plastic that plays video games is ridiculous. There’s no reason for it.”
“Fast forward a bit and I have many Sega and Nintendo systems. Sure, there are more games that I feel are worth buying for the SNES but I still feel that not owning a Genesis is a crime for any game collector. To be prejudice against one or the other is to rob yourself or the full retro gaming experience.”
“Whew, I feel better.”
“Thanks for sharing Jon, but this is a AA meeting, not some stupid videogame forum! Get the hell out of here will ya!!!”
Smokehouse - that sums me up perfectly too! 8-)

(When I opened the thread, I also thought I would see some sort of crazy hybrid system.)

Are we coming out with 16-bit stories then?
Well back in 1992 I'd just moved to England from New Zealand. I was living with my gran and aunt, as well as my immediate family because we were poor. One day my dad came home with a Megadrive. He had Sonic and a couple of other games. I remember he'd bought it for £100. The first time ever video gaming when I was 5 years old was a great feeling. It seemed incredible that I could make the stuff on the screen move by pushing some buttons. Then one wet day my dad pulled Sonic 2 out of his wardrobe. He said he'd been saving it for a rainy day, and it was. The megadrive was almost my only toy, we were so poor (yeah, we could afford a £100 console, so what?). That's what made it so special to me.
Unfortunately I never really got good at those games, I never got past the marble zone on Sonic. That was until I was 15 and got back into Megadrive gaming. Then I beat Empire of Steel. It had only taken me 10 years! In the last year I've gone from 7 games to 43.
I only got a SNES in May this year. At the first play of Super Mario World I noticed the graphics were a lot better than on the Megadrive. Even so, I love my megadrive and have a lot of sentimental value with it. I've now got 12 SNES games.
Back in 1994 one of my friends bought a SNES with a bunch of games for £1 at a village charity auction. I was soo jealous of him. That would be like getting a PS2 with some games for £1 last year.
I was too young to be a fanboy. I didn't even know there were consoles other than the Megadrive. I once took Paperboy for the Megadrive over to my friend's house and couldn't work out why it wouldn't fit in his Master System.
I love my Megadrive.

I'll always like the Amiga a bit more as it was what I played at the time. But the Genesis, Turbo Grafx and SNES were the last mainstream systems when 2D was KING, and so I salute them...
(starts to sing Bright Eyes from Watership Down)...
Cheers,

That really is beautiful. When I was a kid everyone that could afford one owned one or the other. Everyone wished they could own both. Now its relatively easy to do so.
If I could afford it I would runa 16-bit store. It would be heavenly.

I've had a Genesis and SNES sitting mere feet from each other for some time now.
I'm a Genesis person myself, but there is one instance where it wins over the Genesis: "Turtles in Time".
I don't really make a huge deal over the SNES and its color pallete because 256 colors in a crappy game doesnt automatically make a shit game good. But sometimes more colors looks better.
Anyone ever notice how Nintendo and other companies used a more subtle form of claiming their games were better on SNES?
I think the use of "SUPER" in alot of titles was a way os somehow making thier games seem "better"
"Super Ghouls & Ghosts" "Krusty's Super Funhouse" "Super Empire Strikes Back". Why did the Star Wars games need to be "Super"?
