View Full Version : Nintendo GameGirl ~ Does it exist?

I seem to have lodged in my memory from ancient times, the image of a pink coloured GameBoy. Original design.

Not unheard of, but this was a long time before they released the "Play It Loud" series of coloured GameBoy consoles...

It was also distinct as it wasn't called a GameBoy ~ In fact, where the GameBoy logo *Should* have been, it actually said "GameGirl"

I believe it was actually an official Nintendo release though, and not a dodgy pirate console or fake.

I seem to remember a girl in my primary school class had one, yet I only ever laid eyes on it once... Could it perhaps have been a Japanese import??? :/

I'll third the "I think that I have heard of this before."

One a similar note, Nintendo did release this:

I know that is not what you are talking about, but cool nonetheless.

It was a hoax. If you subscribed to Digital Press, you would have known that already. :)

I think a Pink Pocket Gameboy exists...

I'll second that.

An early edition of TOTAL! magazine mentioned something about a possible 'GameGirl'. If I remember, I'll dig it out tonight.

I'm definitely certain Nintendo released a pink Game Boy Pocket here in Australia (and most likely other regions).

It came packed-in with a Barbie game of some description - however, the handheld was still referred to as a Game Boy.

I am pretty 97.5% sure that I remember seeing one in person, so can't be a hoax. It was back in 1990 / 1991, and the image of it has stuck in my mind ever since.

It wouldn't be unheard of, as pointed out above, Nintendo have been known to release a girl orientated GameBoy recently...

My memory isn't too great, but one thing that has stuck in my mind is the fact that the GameBoy was pink (A light pink, not the vibrant luminous pink that the later "Play It Loud" GameBoy's came in) and that it had distinctive "Nintendo GameGirl" written just below the screen...

I've not managed to find a picture of a pink GB Monochrome yet, but I have tracked down some other examples of pink GameBoy's...

So much choice, so much pink! And to think that girls complain that video games are too masculine...

One Barbie game for GB actually said to be made for the GameGirl System on the back of its box. What a joke. That one was released years before any non-gray Gameboys were released outside of Japan though

I have the pearl pink GBA SP, imported from Japan. But it never was released in North America, was it? I think whoever said that the boxart with the girl and all came from a contest, is right. The Japanese box is just an ordinary Japanese square box in pink.

It's possible that the "gamegirl" Game Boy was a pirate Game Boy...

Maybe... It may have been a simple mod done by someone - When you're ten years old, you don't tend to remember such trivial details.

I have never seen pirate GameBoy's before though... Do such things exist? Pictures please.

Oh, wow, that is so cute.

On another note, why do systems have to be pink to interest girls? My favourite colour for years was blue, and now it's shifted to purple. Pink used to make me cringe, and I would rather have played with action figures than Barbies. Stupid marketing strategies. :P

I could have sworn that I heard this too. I remember when GameBoy was new (I was pretty young), and some of my friends were telling me that they were making a "GameGirl". I (of coarse, because I was so young) hated the idea.
Maybe the whole rumor started from little kids like that trying to get other kids to beleive it.
I think maybe I might of saw the pink Gameboy and though "they'll probably name it 'GameGirl' or something"

That i wouldnt mind owning (even if i hardly play my GB as it is).

I wonder why the GBA couldnt have been that size, would have been a ton easier to hold.

And the only time i ever heard the name/use of the title "Gamegirl" was in that Nintendo design your own Gameboy contest.

I read about this about a year ago. I remember reading that Nintendo was going to make a GameBoy and a GameGirl but they decided people would buy the GameBoy more or something.

I can't remember too much of it though.

At a spanish flea market i found a totally bootleg gameboy setup, It was shaped a like a gamboy pocket, red, it had a screen but it didn't actually display anything. Had composite video out to play on a tv. Loaded normal looking gameboy cartridges although the carts had NES/Fami games on them.

TOTAL! magazine. Issue 2. February, 1992.

Game for a lass
Amongst the TOTAL! spy network, rumour has it (and it is only rumour you understand) that a new version of the massively successful cute-yet-def Game Boy is to be launched.

Called the Game Girl, the machine will have only one major difference from the version that is already conquering the pockets of game freaks across the planet - it will be pink.

Aside from this change - which is meant to be appeal to girlies because everyone knows girls like pink (oh yeah?) - how the games play will be exactly the same. It's hoped that this change of style won't mean that we'll soon be seeing softy titles like Terminator 3: Pillow Fight, My Little Pony Wars, Low Hem-Line Man and Skate Or Stay In.

Sup Pink GBASP buddy? (http://roushimsx.shackspace.com/paperplane.jpg) :D

(I only took the picture to brag about my Paper Plane score but then I wound up using it for my wallpaper at work :( )

It's a damn shame it never came out in the US. I've been half tempted to get a pink GBA and add a lighting mod to it to make it useable..partially because I like its shade of pink a bit better and partially because it's just more comfortable than this box :( On a positive note, it DOES match my PS2's shade of sakura perfectly, which makes me happy.

...happy like a little school girl.

...a little school girl with a daisy in her hair

The term "Gamegirl" was almost certainly coined by this artice, I remember like somebody else said it was almost certainly 90-91 when that ran in NP.

i have an advertisement somewhere that shows the differing ORIGINAL colors...pink included. nintendo power maybe? ill look around, but my game room is such a damn mess i dunno..ill try to find it though.

i remember for sure seeing it. i was looking to get all of the original colors, and hadnt heard of the pink one, so the ad was a shocker. whether its called a 'gamegirl' or not i dont know.

I'll second this notion, I remember this b/c I designed a gameboy for this contest as well - I distinctly recall the "Game Girl" as one of the winning designs, finalists or whatever in the contest - they printed an image of it with the other winners in Nintendo Power. That's all that I ever saw or heard of it though.

I too remember mention of a Game Girl back in 90 or 91. I think I remember hearing it was going to be a color Game Boy. "Pffft, yeah, right, like that'll ever happen," I remember thinking occasionally when I thought of the Game Girl until the GBC came out.

I dunno.. Memory works in strange ways.

As did I, but my design royally sucked. Basic gameboy with a bunch of superhero logos slapped on it. Heh...

My favorite design out of those winners was the green/black one with the wings coming off of it. That just looked badass and it probably would have been comfortable as hell, too.

I am almost certain that I saw a pirate "GameGirl" somewhere online.

Or I might be combining that SMS with some GB clone in my mind, I 've seen a number of girly looking systems of all kinds (I've been tempted to actually buy pink systems before, depending on why they are pink).

The only off colour system I ever actually owned was one of those crystal blue transparent PS2s (yes a PS2, despite what you may think, I used to own a few of the things).

When the sun shone through it, it was so beautiful I almost cried. Then my US PS2 broke, and I actually did. And then my friends broke. And then my cousin's PS2 broke. And my other PS2 stopped playing DVD's and...... Back on subject, sorry....

You would think that with all the clones in asia there would be a GameGirl made at some point.

The extremely elusive "Game Girl" does indeed exist!!
I've seen it.
Yet, like the rare item in many a myth, I've never owned one, and I haven't seen it in perhaps 20 years.
The daughter of my parents' best friends used to own it and she brought it to my house, and played Burger Time on it.
It was the exact same size and shape of a regular Game Boy, but it was pink, and had "Game Girl" printed on it, where the words "Game Boy" should have been.

I haven't thought about it in a long time until I noticed a skin on the back of someone's iPhone which looked like this:
6670

But alas, I have not been able to find the real thing since perhaps 20 or so years ago.
I wonder if Kathryn still has it. And if so, what it's worth nowadays, being so rare that Nintendo itself seems to have lost all record of ever having created one.

Maybe those of you who labeled it "pirated" are correct but I was so certain it was a thing.

Could it be... Just hear me out on this... Could it be that it was a very small limited run for executives of nintendo who had daughters? Not saying your familys friend was one of such but maybe a relative of theirs or another friend of theirs? And never made any splash in magazines because it was made in such a small number that it went under the radar.

Its not exactly unheard of where they pull off a very small side project behind scenes for executives only. So I could see it being possible

The closest you're going to get to a real gamegirl is the Tectoy Master System Girl.

Essentially a GameGear-shaped SMS without a screen. and one of the few (if not only) consoles to have "girl" in its name.

The "Game Girl" never existed, plain and simple. Not as a physical product, that is. There was lots of talking/joking about the idea of a "Game Girl" back in the day, not just in that Nintendo Power design content, but that's all it was--talk and fan-made designs. Anyone who thinks he/she saw a "Game Girl" either saw a pink Game Boy or some non-Nintendo handheld, pirate or otherwise.
