Since I can get the Japanese version much cheaper than the US one (I live in Sweden), I want to know if the Jap version is playable at all? i.e do you have to know Japanese?

Thanks

One minute after I posted I found the answer. Heavy Japanese.

There are many translation FAQs online, but I'd suggest waiting that little longer and paying that little more for the US version.

Aren't there 3 different versions of this game coming out in the U.S.? I wish Nintendo would stop the insanity...

Yes, there are three different versions, each housing numerous different breeds of dogs, and with different appearances. For people interested in the game, it probably poses a similar problem that they will have to face in-game.

I'm not going to the store to pick up a DS game, I am going to the store to decide on which puppy to adopt. Personally, I will be picking up the CHihuahua and friends version, because there are Beagles on that card. I'd like to raise me a Beagle named Snoopy. Of course, after getting the game, bringing it home, and starting it up, I'll have to go to the pound and pick out the puppy that most resembles what I picture my Beagle to be.

Oh yeah, and the wife will be choosing a version for her DS. Therefore allowing us to have a different group of selections, while maintaining the ability to share and introduce our dogs with one another.

You can also adopt more than one puppy in your game, so maybe she'll introduce me to another one of her pets, and I'll get to "ooh" and "ahh" over how cute her puppy, which I can never have in my game, looks and acts.

I don't care though, because SNoopy will be extremely more well behaved.

Actually, from what I heard, is that all the dogs eventually become adoptable, no matter what game you are playing. I'm not sure if this is correct, but I know I heard this somewhere.

I am rather certain that you can access every breed in each version. Your particular version only dictates what types of dogs you start out with.

EDIT: Seems that Lone_Monster beat me to it.

This is true. ALL of the breeds of dogs are available in ALL of the versions of the game - the only difference being that the dogs named on the cover are the dogs that are available from the begining and you 'earn' the other dogs by playing the game. That's really it.

I wrote a letter to IGN asking them this question and they answered it in the mail bag. I'm pretty sure that they reworded my email, or just wrote this standard version that had the same question - either way - here it is from IGN- - -

"So say I wanted to buy Nintendogs next month, and I wanted to raise a Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and Beagle. Do I need to buy 2 versions of the game (Labrador Retriever and Miniature Daschund) or can I buy one copy and unlock other breeds through wireless play (trading dog data, breeding, etc.)?

Bob

Every dog in Nintendogs is available in all three versions of the game, but from the start you're stuck with the first six dogs listed specifically for the version you pick up. Eventually as you earn money, you'll gain access to more and more of the dogs that aren't native to your copy.

No offense, and I believe that you may be right, from the article I read in NP, there is a lot that can be unlocked. But for future reference, sighting IGN as a news source doesn't work to well. Far too many false articles there. It seems IGN editors think making up news is a good idea when news is in a slump.

Nintendogs: Dachshund & Friends features the miniature dachshund, golden retriever, beagle, pug, Siberian husky and Shih Tzu. (This is definitely the one I'm getting)

Nintendogs: Chihuahua & Friends features the chihuahua, German shepherd, boxer], cavalier King Charles spaniel, Yorkshire terrier and Shetland sheepdog.

Nintendogs: Lab & Friends features the labrador retriever, miniature schnauzer, toy poodle, Pembroke Welsh corgi, miniature pinscher and shiba inu.

Some big dogs in there.. I think..

Wow, they really DID add to the dogs for the US release. :)

And they put in the Boxer! :D

Okay, that warrents a buy for me now. 8-)

Another question, though -- checking some online sites, it sounds like there are FOUR versions of the game: Chihuahua, Daschund, and Shiba were released in Japan, but it looks like a NEW version, Labrador, is getting released in the US.

Originaly I had read that the Japanese version only had small breeds. I'm glad to see they added some 'bigger' breeds for the US release.
