Now that I have rejoined the realm of computer owners (after 4 years!) I'm looking to try an MMORPG.
My friends play Everquest II, so that's a big plus there, but I think I might need a bit more of a goal than "Get super weapon for purpose of obtaining more super weapon."
I know the whole deal with the genre is that the game doesn't end, but I need a world to save or something.

No you dont.
I tried it. Not worth it. Eventually it leads to massive frustration. I quit FFXI for that reason.

My double-neutroned friend is corrrect. Go buy some cool new PC games, and forget about MMORPGs.
But if you insist on playing them, there are already threads about this. Do a search.
Oh here's one titles "Reccomend me an MMORPG". Might be what you need.

Thanks for the link. I think I may try Guild Wars, mostly because of the lack of a monthly fee.

World of Warcraft would be my first choice
Guild Wars would be my second
Auto Assault sounds interesting, but we'll have to wait and see.

I started with FFXI, being a geek for the series, but just couldn't get into it. Too much leveling up and not much else. Then went on to Guild Wars because it didn't have the monthly fee, and got into it...nice and fast paced. As someone who doesn't like to spend more than a few hours at a time gaming, it worked for me.
We then ended up getting World of Warcraft a few weeks ago and I'm enjoying that one even more. It requires a bit more time and attention, but it's most definitely addictive.
So Guild Wars would be an ideal introduction I'd think!

Try Anarchy Online since it's free for the basic game (totally free meaning free download, no monthly fee thru January '06). It's much more interesting than EQ2. If you are not into Sci-fi then go with WOW since it's very easy to play.

Phantasy Star Online. Blue Burst is almost getting it right this time with the support for the US version.
Oh, and by the way, Anarchy Online is ironically working to set up STREAMING COMMERCIALS in-game. You walk past a spot, and suddenly you'll have to watch a commercial. enjoy that.

Yep they have banner ads and soon mini-commercials. This however is only seen by the free accounts not the paying ones. They are not a distraction and expect to see more MMORPG's with this type of advertising.

I just started playing Priston Tale yesterday.... seems quite good from what i played.
Ragnarok Online for me will always be the ultimate MMORPG

What's kind of funny is that FFXI has a *lot* of end game content that quite a few people that left it from WoW came back for... it's just the long struggle getting to end game level that's tough.
FFXI is a great game, going on almost a year and a half of playing it. I don't know if I could recommend it to someone new, especially when you mentioned "Get super weapon for purpose of obtaining more super weapon", since that's the foundation of every MMORPG. ;-)
I'd probably recommend to you EQ2, since you said you have friends in it. Friends make a bad game good, and a good game great.

I would also reccomend Guild Wars. Free monthly fee and it has a solid engine, great if you love PvP action.
EDIT: hooray! 1 year at DP!
