View Full Version : Rare N64 Controller?

I heard tale a while back that at the end of the N64s life span, Nintendo of Japan released (or maybe just made?) a redesigned controller that was basically a Gamecube form factor/design with the N64 button layout.
I'm a big Nintendo fanboy, but my N64 was the only system I ever parted with, mainly because I just hated how ugly the controllers were. (I'm considering getting one again though.) If I could find one of these, I think I'd fall in love with the system again.
Can anyone verify/confirm/provide pictures/give me one?
Even if this official redesign is bunk, can anyone recommend a good N64 controller that doesn't look like a pitchfork?

You loved the system but got rid of it because o the controller.......
I discarded a million really mean things to say about that just now. Anyway get a N64 and quit being a bitch.

I have this controller, but I think it is third party:

Yow.
I didn't exactly love it, considering I only really played OoT on it, but that was enough at the time. Since then I've become more of a collector and know there are more top shelf games than I was aware of at the time. Guess I should say "I'd like to fall in love with it."
Besides, if you're going to have any reason to hate a console, isn't controller design a pretty damn good reason?
Sorry for being a bitch? Jesus.

That was the one I saw in a store today that reminded me about this. It is third-party.
How do you feel about it? Does it feel good/cheap/unresponsive?

Holy crap! I'm speechless.
Well...considering I had never actually seen a picture of what I was describing, nor have I ever seen this before, that's probably as good a guess as any.
Any clue if it's official or...anything about it?!
Either way, I want one. Now.

I've had that photo for a quite a while, wondering many of the same things you do, but I never really did any research.
I'd venture to guess that it's first party, based on the design of the analog stick, the design of the d-pad, and I think I can make out the Nintendo logo on the top of the controller, just like the regular N64 ones.
Time to do a bit of research.

Yea, I definitly think you're right about the logo, I was thinking the same thing. You can just make out the engraving of the Nintendo oval at the top, just like on the official controllers.

It's not a BAD controller....it just looks funny and is a bit unwieldy. (Seriously)
Do you clean your system often? Let me tell you why you should....

I think that's a photoshopped picture. They took a Gamecube's d-pad and analog joystick and put them next to an N64's buttons. The things that make it relatively obvious to me:
- The shadows on the joystick versus the N64 buttons is in a slightly different direction.
- The D-pad is COMPLETELY useless were it is. Nintendo is way to anal to have released something with a D-pad that was unusable.
- The analog joystick is much bigger in comparison to the N64 buttons than the GameCube one is in real life. MUCH bigger.
So anyway, an interesting fake, but in my opinion a fake none the less. I always wish something like that had come out though :(

That's the exact same one I was thinking of to recommend! Is that the Mako pad? For a third party controller, it is very good, and I would say just as good as an official Nintendo one, but without the cramp that the official one gives you.
Mind you, I would rather choose an N64 controller anyday over a GameCube one. Everything about the cube one is just wrong, mainly the fact that the four buttons are in such a stupid formation ~ Why the fish couldn't they just put them in the usual two by two formation as had been the standard more or less for the last decade?

Sorry I'm late to this discussion... but it's a "Horipad Mini 64". It's not a fake. It was produced only in Japan by Hori Electric Co., Ltd. and does indeed feature a joystick much like the GameCube's. It's also quite small, about 4.5" across the front. It has two shoulder buttons on each side (L and R, and a Z button on each side below that). There is no Z trigger underneath. It does have a standard rumble/memory slot on the bottom. They come in just about every color the original controllers came in, including transparent and two-tone colors.
This is my single favorite controller for the system, though it is pretty hard to find. I have two of them and would gladly work out a trade with someone who owns a silver and black "Millennium 2000" N64 controller.

That's pretty damn sweet looking. Too bad it was never released over on this side of the Pacific, cause I'd love to have one, especially after experiencing the Cube controller.

Isn't Hori sort of a first party developer? Either that or Nintendo openly approves of their various products.
EDIT: I looked into it a bit, and found that Nintendo licensed the Hori SNES-style gamepad for the Nintendo Gamecube. Anything else is beyond me.

The Hori Pad looks fantastic. I can just imagine the comfort. Too bad they are so unavailable.
