View Full Version : Why do even most pros think the Neo-Geo came out in '91?

Even the DP Collectors Guide puts the earliest US games at July, 1991. Wrong. The system's official US release date is October 25, 1990, period. I got the system for my 18th birthday in November from my mom, less then a month after it was released. It came with Baseball Stars Professional and two controllers. It is NOT the Japanese version, as everything is in English. However, the box is a pretty ugly plain white (will take a pic if requested). For Christmas that 1990, I received Ninja Combat under the tree.

Back in '90, I used to get four gaming mags each month (EGM, Game Players, Game Pro, and VG&CE). I most likely got the date from one of those mags, as I was obsessed with the Neo-Geo since first reading about it in EGM. I will look in my mags, but the October 25, 1990 date has always stuck in my mind

I am 100% certain that I recieved Ninja Combat for Christmas, 1990. Call me a weirdo, but every single Christmas fromn 1987 to 1995, I wrote down every video game I recieved that Christmas. I also dated them, and Christmas '90, Ninja Combat was on the list (along with the memory card, and Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion for the Genesis). I also most likely have the reciept if I look hard enough.

BTW guys, I'm not some kid who thinks he remembers something and could be mistaken. I'm 32 years old, have been playing since '79, was on TV Pixx at age 7 in '80 (highest score of the week!), wrote a newsletter called Zap! in the early 90's, hold a certified world record in Monster Lair (TG-CD), have 32 systems, 1,000's of games, and over 500 magazines. Trust me, I'm 100% positive about this.

So did you get a Super Famicom then? Because from what I've read, the SNES wasn't released in the USA until August or September 1991. And Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts was released in October 1991 in Japan according to DP ...

Oops, I'm going to agree that I made myself look like a total ass with that post. :) That was off the top of my head. <digs out Christmas list> Sorry for the mixup, here is my 1990 video game Christmas list of games I received:

Ninja Combat (Neo-Geo)
Memory card (Neo-Geo)
Mickey Mouse (Genesis)

For the record, here's my 1991 Christmas list:

Super NES (system)
Super Ghouls & Ghosts (SNES)
Act Raiser (SNES)
Snake's Revenge (NES)
Sengoku (Neo-Geo)

Both lists are dated, as are all my other Christmas lists.

With all the Neo-Geo AES freaks here I'm sure the guide is right on an official date.. there are just to many fanboys who come in here that someone wouldn't have argued the date already like in 1999 or something.

Me, I own a Neo-Geo CDZ.. very nice!

For Christmas '93, I got a Jaguar instead of the 3DO. The funny part is, that was a month after my 21st birthday, and I had no job at the time. :) However, at $699, the 3DO was too much to ask for (along with Laseractive and CDi). The Neo-Geo was an exception. I just HAD to have it, and did a lot of begging.

Yeah, I was totally spoiled. From the period of '87 to '93, my mom bought me four games a month. My best year was probably 1989. My mom bought me the Genesis, Turbo Grafx, Lynx, Gameboy, and almost 30 combined games from the period of late August to the end of the year. ;)

I never played it before I bought it. Although the October 25th, 1990 date is official by SNK, if I remember right, the few stores that initially carried it may have gotten shipments a week earlier...

Perhaps. I do live in NYC, afterall. I don't see how they would wait a full 8+ months to go nationwide though. However, I didn't see it in stores at the October 25th date. Even in November, it wasn't in my local big name stores. My Mom had to mail order it, I believe from Game Express. It can't be the Japenese version. The box (a plain white), instruction, and games are all in English.

Neither did I! Checking my video game date book, it says I got my NES on January 8, 1987. A few weeks earlier, I had gotten a 7800 for Christmas '86 and was disappointed.

There's just no two wayws about it, it came out in October 1990. I don't mean to sound smart, but my date book does NOT lie. I maty be a little nuts, but every system I've ever owned after the 2600 I write the date down that I received it. Let me check the Neo-Geo...says 11-29-90. Hmm, I though I got it earlier in November, but I was off by a few weeks. Oh well, that's still 1990.

Not old at all. Let's see how good you look at 32. :)

Seriously, being born in late '88 sucks. You missed the entire 80's and not only the Golden Age of gaming, but the NES age as well. 8-)

First, you are one lucky bastid for getting a NeoGeo for Xmas. Second, I too remember playing th Neo in late 1990. Third, yes the SNES did come out in August, 1991 (the 11th or 20th is ringing a bell in my head...could be wrong). Fourth, your Neo came in a white box? WTF? Was it the gold model or silver? I know the gold sure didn't come in a white box...at least the one that was available at the local game rental store (yes, it was an USA model).

When I talked to Japangamesnow.com he said that he had never heard of it. He thought that it might have been a refurbed unit.

The same guy who sells the "ultra-rare green label white boxed Neo control sticks" with nearly the exact same packaging told you that the system you bought (in 1990) was a refurb? :hmm: LOL

Anyways, I'm sure your recollection in this case is correct. Here's my take on the mysterious "white box" US Neo AES systems.

First off, you aren't the first person with this story. I know a couple other people with white box Neos, one of whom purchased it directly from SNK prior to Neos being sold at retail in 1991. It's my belief and opinion that these were available direct from SNK for a short period (late 1990-early 1991) before the Neo hit the retail sector (hence the lame packaging). Keep in mind that during this time, Neos were marketed in Japan as a "rental-only" game machine that, if memory serves, came in almost identical white-box generic packaging. It was after a few months of the rental experiment in Japan that SNK decided to sell the system outright. It was most likely during this time that the white-box Neo's were made available direct from SNK-USA (yes, in 1990). And a handful of games, too.

I'm going to do some more research on this. Do you happen to know if your Neo was bought at a retail store or mail-ordered? I'd be willing to bet it's the latter...

You lucky bastard! Your mom bought you a NeoGeo for your BIRTHDAY. It's one of the most expensive systems (if not THE most expensive) in video game history!

My parents were always cheap on video games. My grandparents helped out a bit, but I was still always shortchanged. I didn't become aware of video games 'til I was 8, that was '92. I wanted the NES, my dad came home with a used Atari 5200 and 2 games, Pac-Man and Ms Pac-man. I eventually got the NES from my grandparents for my Communion. It was the bundle with the 2 controllers, Super Mario/Duck Hunt and a zapper. I think I had a total of 8 games for it by the time it was untimely retired. Then after much begging I got the Sega Genesis, I don't remember what for and it came with Sonic 2 (aah, the glory days when games prebundled in systems were a standard, not just some holiday shopping season marketing ploy) and I also had very few titles for that. I begged and begged for a SNES. I had a Sega my parents argued, I didn't need another system. I begged for a GameBoy, a Game Gear and a Nomad all to no avail. I eventually got a GameBoy Pocket for X-mas, but a year or two later my sister got the GameBoy Color for her birthday, upstaging me. Then when the Advance came out she got that for her birthday that year leaving me with the Color! (but then I started working at Toys R Us and bought myself the Platinum one when it first came out cuz it came with a free Arm Light) My sister also got the original PlayStation for Christmas one year. We ended up getting a decent amount of PlayStation titles between generous grandparents, GameStop and a little shop that used to be down the block from me that sold used games that's long gone (the owner's original store is in Revere, a couple towns away but I never get to go there) But thanks to my grandparents I did eventually get an N64 with Ocarina of Time for Xmas, albeit in one of the last couple years of the system's run, then a couple years later a PS2 and they got me the Gran Turismo 3 pack for like $350 after I told them they didn't need to get it cuz I didn't care for the game, but they insisted cuz I needed a game to go with it (although my parents already bought me Devil May Cry and Crash Bandicoot). The year after, my very generous boyfriend got me a platinum GameCube and Super Mario Sunshine for Xmas. All my other systems I bought myself with the exception of the Genesis (salvaged from the trash) and the SNES (went halfsies with my sister)

Although nowadays, since it's all I really care about besides DVDs and books, I'll get 2 or 3 video games for Christmas depending on the price of the games I asked for. My boyfriend always buys me a game for Valentine's Day, anniversary, b-day, Xmas or Easter and I do the same for him. Everything else I have to buy myself. So I'm luckier than some poor kids, but far from spoiled. Unlike you and your NeoGeo. If I had known the NeoGeo back then, my parents would've probably slapped me for even suggesting they buy me something that expensive. I mean, at that time I couldn't even own two systems at the same time and it was hard getting new games for my system! Which is probably why I have started collecting games and systems, to fill the void in my childhood.

I tried to check it by looking in my flyer collection, but it the Neo Geo AES flyer doesn't give any release date. It only gives technical information and some pictures of the system. Oh and it was selected as a great quality export product from Japan. I'm not sure if it was the introduction flyer, but I think so as it doesn't mention a single game (not in the text, but also there are no screenshots).

But I think 1990 is right.
