View Full Version : Nintendo DS through Airport X-Ray....is it OK?

I'm heading to the airport in a few hours to pick up my daughter and since I'll probably be sitting there awhile, I was going to bring my DS. However, I just thought of the security and that it would have to go through the X-Ray thing. Does anyone know if this will harm the system in any way? Thanks for any info or thoughts on this.

I wouldn't worry about it. Xrays can't do much of anything even to film these days if I'm not mistaken.

Mine's been through one and it's just fine. I don't think X-rays can hurt electronics. It's big magnetic feilds you've got to watch for, so whatever you do don't use you'r DS in or around an MRI machine. LOL
P.S. The wireless won't cause the plane to crash either, it's just a myth.

I know people who have had their film wiped from xray machines, though magnets are even worse....for any magnetic media. Shouldn't matter for non-magnetic media though.
As for a DS causing a plane to crash, no, that won't happen. However, any wireless device (or non-wireless, for that matter) does put out interference. The FCC regulates how much interference is acceptable. So, while your laptop or GB isn't going to cause the plane to crash, it could theoretically let off some interference that affects an intrument on the plane, however ambiguously.
So, the theory behind it is no myth at all.

Theory behind it is no myth. But the Cell phone, PDA, bring down a plane fear is a myth.

Wait... you have to go through an X-ray just to go into the airport? Is that only in the States?

No, not to just go into the airport but I had to actually meet my daughter at the gate because she is a minor. Normally people that are not flying are not to even go through security but since I had to pick her up, I got a special pass at ticketing so I can get through.
Anyway, I went through with my DS and it was fine.

How about if you had 4 16 player pictochat convos on a plane... would it crash then?

I've taken mine through without a problem before. They were actually all over everyone's ass about their shoes, that's it.

As long as it's carry-on, it should be fine. The following happened with media storage, so this may or may not affect the DS:
One of my co-workers told me their daughter had packed her digital camera in her regular luggage and not her carry-on. When she (and others apparantly) got to Europe and tried to take pictures, the pictures wouldn't save. Those who had their cameras on carry-on had no problems.
Recently I took a vacation in Colorado. My sister-in-law packed her 35mm camera in her regular luggage. Her pictures turned out all snowy (though this could be an x-ray thing yet we couldn't find information on whether or not you should store film in your regular luggage).
You're probably going to play your DS anyway so you shouldn't have any worries of malfunction. Except when the plane goes spiraling downward when your DS's WiFi kicks in :D

Couldn't you just put the DS in the tray which they look at by hand? Or would it be too big for that?

The bomb scanners at US airports (all checked bags go through them now) will 100% reliably fog film. BAd idea to pack any film in there. Magnetic media can have much the same reaction, but it's not as consistent. Anyway, for safety's sake it's far better to pack all film and electronics in carryons, especially because the TSA folks at certain airports have very light fingers. Oh, i'm sure they take things for 'security' reasons.
Regarding the DS -- i've had it through probably 50 trips through an X ray machine since November (I fly a whole lot) and nobody's had a problem with it nor have I had a problem with it functioning properly....

Whatever you do, be sure not to get caught whispering instructions to your DS. "Okay, plant the bomb under the luggage rack, right next to the potato salad..."
