Here’s a game from my personal misty past! Moebius: The Orb of Celestial Harmony for Commodore 64 is a rather unique oriental computer game. It’s part RPG, part fighting game (sort of), and really in a genre by itself! Basically the entire game is a quest of spiritual enlightenment where you explore areas, stop evildoers, and gain levels. Become a stronger and more enlightened fighter!

Moebius has a very simple interface. Basically you search around until you find something, then investigate it. As you progress, you are given small missions to complete. It’s very RPG-like in many aspects, the level gaining, the quests, and so forth. However, the battle sequences are much like an early fighting game. You can move forward and back, shoot fireballs at your opponent, and duel with swords. The hit areas are poor and the hit detection leaves something to be desired, but for some reason the game is very fun nonetheless. It may not look it, but this is one surprisingly addictive game!

Musically, don’t expect too much. It is of course the C64. It’s not a bad sounding game though…has a nice mystic Asian feel to it. The graphics are surprisingly good for the time. I really enjoyed the whole ambiance the game had visually. I never did beat the game on the C64…always got my butt kicked by powerful enemies. But damned if I didn’t have a good time with it!

If you want a little bit of RPG, a bit of action, and a bit of, well…Moebius, you owe it to yourself to give Moebius: The Orb of Celestial Harmony a try! Keep in mind though, not only is this a fairly old game, but it pretty much predates RPGs. Don’t expect it to just suck you in right away! It’s one of those weird little titles that just strangely grows on you the more you play it! And best of all…you can get it free! That’s right, finally a Sleeper that won’t cost you a penny to try! Moebius is a free download from that wonderful site of PC abandonware, the Underdogs. The game can be downloaded at this LINK (http://www.the-underdogs.org/downloadfile.php?file=games/m/moebius/files/moebius.zip&id=734)

Go check it out and have some old-school fun! The game is available for other platforms of course, but I played it on the C64!

Back in the day, Mobius was one of my favorite games. I've never tried the PC version, but I played the Commodore 64 version a lot, sometimes just to see those cool Mobius loading screens. ;) I remember really liking the RPG aspect of it and usually getting really frustrated with the fighting part.

I'm surprised almost no one has piped up about this one. It's a very unique game...surprisingly fun! The fighting IS frustrating, but the game is kinda fun, so I never minded. And who's Nick Foley?

I played this game a lot years ago. I was too young to really make any progress, but I did like throwing shurikens everywhere. It seems like I found I did better in the fighting segments if I didn't use a sword, just went with the fists.

It's Mick Foley, professional wrestler.
