Hey all! I am taking a train up to Montreal to visit some family in about a week and a half, and I was thinking about maybe doing some game-hunting up there (considering that it has been ages since I have found anything good in NYC). I was hoping that some of the Canadian gamers/collectors on the board could point me to any and all stores in the Montreal area. Also, if you have the time, I would really appreciate it if you could give me a brief run-down of what each store is like (what they carry, what they have in abundance, what they don't have, etc.).

I really would be extremely grateful for any help at all. I am really hoping to get at least a few games in the wild.

Thank you very much in advance!

There's a game store in the east end called L'enjeu Jr. It's ran by gamers (the owner is a member of our CCJVQ group). They mostly rent games but they also sell them, from all eras (down to the NES at least; I haven't checked lately if Frank sells anything older).

The store's address is:
L'En-jeu Jr.
6287 Sherbrooke Street East
Montreal
Telephone: 514-256-4444

To get there by public transit: take the Metro green line eastbound (Honoré-Beaugrand direction) and get off at Cadillac station. Exit through the Sherbrooke street North exit (to be on the north side of the street) and head to the left (eastbound) on Sherbrooke. The store is located is a sort of small strip mall, right after a St-Hubert BBQ restaurant.

If you want to have a shock or laugh at the outrageously high prices for retro stuff (I know I did), you'll find Gamebuzz downtown. If you only intend on seriously go on game hunts, avoid this place, however.

Gamebuzz
514-982-0000
395, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest,
Montréal, QC H3B 1A4

Metro Place-des-Arts, exit Bleury. From the Bleury exit, turn right to head toward Ste-Catherine street, then left on Ste-Catherine street.

The Microplay stores vary greatly in quality and prices. You'll find standalone stores as well as counters in Videotron video stores. Avoid the Microplay in Ville St-Laurent near Côte-Vertu metro. It's a POS. The Microplay in Côte-des-Neiges (Queen-Mary road) is hit-and-miss, but they don't carry anything older than NES.

One chain of thrift stores not mentioned on the page linked above (which is outdated anyway), is Fripe-Prix Renaissance, which is in the same style as Village Value.

Here's a Yellow Pages listing of thrift stores in the eastern part of town: http://findabusiness.yellowpages.ca/mp/QC/MONTREQC/0000000000000954470117540006.html
And for the west end: http://findabusiness.yellowpages.ca/mp/QC/LASALLE/0000000000000954490117540006.html

For some reason, the Fripe-Prix near my home isn't listed. Its address is:
7205 St Jacques,
Montréal, QC H4B 1V3
Tel. : 514-484-0145

Take the subway to Vendôme station and take the 90 bus (westbound). The bus stop is right after a Super C supermarket (which you will see on your left) and the Montreal Gazette printing plant (which you will see on your right).

BTW, if you intend on getting around with public transit, you can either purchase a 1-day or a 3-day tourist card or a weekly bus pass (if you're staying more than 3 days). These give you unlimited access to buses and the subway while the pass is valid. Here's the price of those passes (in Canadian dollars):
1-day tourist card (scratch the valid day):$8
3-day tourist card (scratch the valid days): $16
Weekly pass (valid from Sunday to Saturday): $18
Single fare (cash): $2.50
6-ticket booklet: $11.25

No, I haven't. Actually, I have never even heard of it. Is it in Montreal or in New York? Well, where ever it is, I would really like some more information!

@Lady Jane - Wow! Thank you! That is exactly what I am looking for! I am much obliged!

Do you like oldish PC games? Info-Livres Plus (http://infolivres.com/) has an interesting selection.

Aside from the places Lady Jaye already mentioned, you could try making the trek out to Boutiques Marcado, a sort-of flea market with quite a few used games. There's also another Value Village and an ex-Microplay store nearby to make the trip worthwhile, but it is quite some distance from downtown Montreal (i.e., across the river).

It's totally funny you mentioned this topic as I myself did some hunting last year, while I was on my Saturn/Sega kick.

I stayed at the Place D'Arms in old montreal right by the Notre Dame exactly one year ago.

My only good find for what I wanted was a shop about half an hour out of town in the suburbs. I can't remember the name now however they were in the phone book which I used to call 10-15 stores looking for mainly saturn stuff (They were the only people that claimed to have anything)

So I get there and walk into this little strip mall in the suburbs and there I found lots of boxes of nes, atari, ps1 and a box under the counter with DC and a few saturn titles.

I didn't find anything amazing although I got complete copies of Marvel vs Capcom & Skies of Arcadia for probably 10-15 bucks each and I believe a loose copy of UMK3 on SS for about 6-8 bucks. Nothing spectacular but I wanted to feel like I accomplished something in my journey. If you are looking for sega stuff, many of the shops still have Genesis titles in great abundance. SS/DC stuff seemed to be limited in my personal opinion. The store I went to was also a little pricey but it had some cool items, I wish I could give you the name.

My best advice is get a phone book and call around when you get there, Montreal is a bilingual city so most everywhere you call you can speak english although they may say hello in french.

I checked out a pawn shop or two on the main drag and found a few boxed SNES games at a higher price then I wanted to pay.

Good luck, post your findings when you get back in this thread!!!
