I added 68 games to my NES collection, for a measly $170 CDN (about $140 USD). That's $2.50 CDN per game, including taxes (it was at a local video game store). I just bought every NES game they had that I didn't have. Among those were many games that I hadn't even heard of, ever, including some R5's (although I haven't looked at the guide for the rarity of most of the games yet). I haven't tried them all (I'm at 13 thus far, not all new to me), but the best one so far is a gem known as...

Formula 1: Built to Win (by Seta, 1990)

This is an excellent single-player racing game, easily the best one I've played on the NES. It looks like Rad Racer at first glance, but it's much, much better. There are four cars to choose from (a Mini Cooper, a Vector W2, a Ferrari F40 and a Formula 1) and 32 courses (including eight real F1 tracks, such as the Gilles Villeneuve Grand Prix here in Montreal... I never knew there were Rockies-style mountains nearby :hmm: LOL). The courses are short and sweet. Not only that, but there's a time trial mode to hone your skills as much as you want on any course, right from the beginning (without opponents), and which saves your best time and name! That impressed me quite a bit, since this is an NES racing game we're talking about. But the best feature in the game is the main mode... think Gran Turismo for the NES. You have to beat the easier courses to earn a little money in order to buy better car parts, thus enabling you to go for harder courses, winning licenses to participate in other races and buying new parts, new cars, etc. Once you've got the appropriate license, you can try any course as often as you want (pending a fee for most of them), and there's even a little trophy which indicates which courses you've already won. You can save your game at any time, which rules. The learning curve is quite smooth: the game is challenging, but not frustratingly so. The graphics are impressive and very fluid, which gives the game a nice sense of speed. The backgrounds are varied and the scenery is easy on the eyes. Two of the three music tracks are pretty good, and the other is okay. You can also turn the music off to hear sound effects such as the tires screaching, the engine roaring, etc. I couldn't stand GT3 because there were too many cars, too much customization, etc. Here, the balance between gameplay and customization just seems right; it's very fun to cool off and browse through auto parts or even try your luck at the slot machine mini-game after an intense race. I'm anything but a racing game fan, so I haven't tried that many (although I can say I'm familiar with Project Gotham Racing, F-Zero X, Super Mario Kart and GT3 in particular), but I was shocked by the quality of this title. Anyway, I highly recommend this game, which does not receive the attention that it deserves by any means. Perhaps it's due to its rarity (Wow! I just checked the guide, and it's an R5 according to DP, which makes it one of the rarest NES games that I own), and that's a shame. I myself had never heard of, let alone played, this game before.

This is why I like to buy random games... there is no joy greater than discovering some hidden gem like this. Now if you'll excuse me, I have quite a bit of treasure-seeking to do. :D

I dream of the day I can do that :(

I probably won't have any finds for a while as I've just spent most of my money on a gamecube. I have to make do with £10/15 a week.

Personal "finds" threads
One of the things we love to see the most is what everyone found while thrifting on any given week or weekend. For that reason, you'll SEE a thread for each week or weekend that everyone who wants to share their discoveries with can add to.

I usually never post in this topic, but I just got a killer find.

Was sitting at work yesterday and this guy comes in and we started talking about videogames. We were talking about the turbografx and he told me his broke and that he was looking for another one. I told him how I collected tg stuff too and he asked me if I had a cd system and I told him yes. He said that he would be back. He came back and gave me all these games for FREE!!!

Turbografx CD Games:

Monster Lair
Final Zone 2
Sherlock Holmes
Fighting Street
Y's Book I & II
Y's 3
Magical Dinosaur Tour
J.B. Harold Murder Club
Valis 2
Lords of the Rising Sun

PC-Engine CD Games:

Golden Axe
Final Zone 2
The Manhole (lol...it's actually a kids game, seriously)
Red Alert
Pomping World

Not only did I get all the above for free, but all 15 games are complete and in mint condition (no boxes though, and only one spine card). I about fell over when he gave them to me. I checked the DP database and they are worth a combined $278.

I alos hit up the Yard Sales, but there was slim pickings this weekend... I found a barebone Original Playstatin with one controller, which looked like it was stored in a swamp with a price tag of 50 bucks.... I decided to pass on it

I did, however, pick up the following movies:
Waterboy
Billy Madison
Big Daddy
Close Encounters fo the Thrid Kind
Faculty
13th Warrior
No Holds Barred
Night at the Roxbury
Bill & Teds Excellent Adventure

And th closest thing to video gaming:
Top Gun Thrustmaster PC Joytsick (50 cents)
Can be seen in the following link:
http://www.cyberg8t.com/f2comp/prodtg.htm

Anyone got any idea on what games I can play with it, and if it would work with modern computers???

)Our internet was down last night so I couldn't post my finds for yesterday. We went to the Richland Mall and I went into this game store called "Special FX". This is one of those game shops where they use this big overpirced master list for games and loose used games can be at up to $9.99(or more. $24.99 for megaman X! @_@). But I dug though the overpriceyness and found Mountain Bike Rally (my first R6 for the SNES! :D ) for $4.99. Then I spotted a sealed copy of battlezone for atari 2600. I figured it would be overpriced way too much, but the price for each game is the same, even when it is sealed. (ex. $4.95 for videomation, the same for it sealed, which they didn't have, I would have bought it for that much!) So, I paid $1.95 for it :D .

Here's my second post for my finds. After a little accident thread mix-up. :embarrassed:
-----------------------------------------

Finally found something good at the local SA:

SNES:
Aladdin
Championship Pool
Lion King
Midway Presents: Arcade's Greatest Hits: Atari Collection
Speedy Gonzales
(all loose)

Then at a pawn shop got:

Genesis:
Contra Hard Corps (cart & manual)
Dragon's Revenge (boxed)
Mutant League Football (loose)
Thunder Force III (boxed)

Last stop was a couple of yard sales. Didn't find anything at the first one but then got this Panasonic stereo cabinet (minus the stereo itself) for $2. It's got a front glass door and the top is also glass. It will make a great little side cabinet for some of my extra consoles.

I had a pretty good garage sale day. 8-) Although I didn't run into anything rare...I found alot of stuff that will fetch a good price on ebay.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v357/Hero_of_Hyrule/HPIM0286.jpg

NES, SNES, Saturn, and Dreamcast systems! A couple missing hookups, but I'll be able to get those no problem.
Paid $15 for all of them! :D

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v357/Hero_of_Hyrule/HPIM0290.jpg

16 NES games...most of them pretty good titles! Spent $10 for all the games. Ninja Gaiden II, Super C, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Turtles II: The Arcade Game, Legendary Wings, Tecmo Super Bowl, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Castlevania III, Adventures of Bayou Billy, George Foreman KO, Black Bass, Bart vs the World, Bartman vs Radio Active Man, Pro Wrestling, and (what a surprise) SMB/Duckhunt. The only games in this lot I didn't already own were: Bartman vs Radio Active Man, Tecmo Super Bowl, Black Bass, and George Foreman KO. I'll be keeing those 4 titles and selling the rest.

Oh, and the R.O.B was 25 cents. It has none of the parts with it, so I'll probably just put it up on display next to my other R.O.B. instead of trying to sell it on ebay....even though it still would probably sell for a few bucks.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v357/Hero_of_Hyrule/HPIM0289.jpg

Pretty good sized lot of Nintend Power magazines and Player's Guides. I paid $5 for the whole lot. To bad there's nothing from the NES or SNES days...but there's a couple player's guides here that I didn't already have, so I'll be holding on to those and selling the rest on ebay.

Overall, I spent $30 and 25 cents on everything. :)

Anyways, to make up for it, here's todays story:

I woke up early thing morning, and my mother tells me that we are going to Long Island (it was a 2 hour drive with traffic!) for a summer family get-together thing. Of course, I didn't want to go, but I decided I would look up some game stores in the area to see if I could make the best of it. After some searching and some mapquest-ing, I found that there was a local store dealing used games less then a mile away from the house that we would be at. So some time during the middle of the party, I walked to the gamestore to check it out. I made out with some pretty good deals:

Went hunting for the first time in a week or two....

Hit a bunch of thrifts and found nothing but damn ATARI GAMES. Oh well, better than nothing I guess:

2600 - Cosmic Swarm (loose) - 3...yay for 3 dollar commavid game.
2600 - Planet Patrol (loose) - 3...dupe...whoops.
2600 - Space Attack (loose) - 3
2600 - Space Chase (loose) - 3
2600 - Wizard of Wor (complete) - 3

There must a been around 10 more loose games and about 15 complete ones in really nice condition. I thought about picking up a few more but couldn't remember what games I already had boxed and didn't wanna pay about 50 bucks for a bunch of common 2600 games so I passed. They're waiting out there somewhere for any interested Arizonian.

I found a CIB Swordquest Waterworld at a Tuscon Bookmans today. Cost me a big 3 dollars. Plus over the last 2 days I have picked up about 50 games.

Today I made a quick stop at a Value Village I don't think I've ever been to before on the way home from the grocery store (with frozen food possibly melting in the trunk, yikes!). I was surprised at how clean and organized the store was. Right away I spotted some game stuff too. After checking through the whole store, I ended up getting:

For 2.99 each:
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Game Gear) - complete and very minty
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Game Gear) - same as above
OutRun Europa (Game Gear) - ditto
The Irem Skins Game (SNES) - also complete and minty (My boyfriend talked me into getting it just because Irem made it, even though it's just a golf game. :P)
Zoop (SNES) - loose (just always wanted to give it a try)
An official Game Boy carrying case that should come in handy

And for 6.99: Tetris Tower 3-D board game. Maybe a bit expensive, but I guess I was just a little jealous everytime someone finds those cool old school video game board games. :P It may not be old, but it looks damn cool. Real life Tetris! It even plays the Russian Tetris music. :) It's like brand new as well, and I counted to make sure all the Tetris pieces are included (and all 60 are).

I passed on a few other mint and complete SNES games, just a couple other golf games and sports games that didn't look interesting and probably aren't even worth the 3 bucks. Same goes for a couple other Game Gear games. And there were the typical SMB/Duck Hunt carts, loose Super Mario World, some worn out controllers, and an overpriced N64. Oh well, I'm still pleased with what I got. :) Now I just need a Game Gear!

Anyways, in Florida, randomly, don't ask. I decided to pick up some to game, so I snagged a Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Good stuff.

Damn nice fins Bacon!!! Especially on Outrun like Carey mentioned!!!

Fairly good day for me... Apart from being about 5 seconds too late to a MIB Mario Bros Game and Watch... Ah well, no biggie!

Hahaha, I actually bought that yearbook 'back in the day'. I remember filling in the Mega-CD competition question 'Why do you want the Mega-CD system?' (or something along those lines) as 'Because I've never had one and my friend Matthew has'. :/

Anyway, my finds, apparently cartridge-based pong machines:

Sweet mama that is nice! A well kept AES with 2 minty looking arcade sticks and three complete fighters, man you just scored one of my desired holy grails. I hope to get a good priced AES one of these days. Great deal!

Anyway, I didn't get much today, but what I got was nice and cheap. I have faith in my local flea market again after actually coming home with something this weekend. Today was Konami day for me.

Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (SNES): $2
Contra III (SNES): $2
Super Gameboy (SNES): $2
Suikoden (PSX): $5 :)
RayCrisis (PSX): $3 (OMFG, the professional and fan based reviews are right, this game SUCKS!!!!!!!!! I thought Working Designs only published quality titles...)

Then at FYE, I got Eternal Eyes for $2.70. All I know is that it was made by SunSoft and that it is a Tactical RPG. That sounds like a winning combination to me!

Not much on the console end this weekend but I did happen to snag some PC stuff:

Creative Labs Blaster 3D video card (complete, shrinkwrapped): 4MB PCI card, demo games, and a card to enter a 1997 Ford Explorer Sweepstakes. $5

Quake III Arena (jewel case, CD, insert): $1

Star Wars: X-Wing (Win 9X edition, case, CD, instructions): $1

Oregon Trail 3rd Edition (case, CDs, instructions): $2

I'm going to be installing Win 3.1 and Win 95 on my DOS box and I think the current video card is flaking out. I also plan to see if I can get my WiFi card working under DOS so my wife and I can play Warcraft 2 or CivNet together.

I stopped at a gamestop today and found a couple nice finds.

Tales of Destiny II (PlayStation, Complete) - $34.99
Alundra (PlayStation, Complete) - $11.99

I thought ToD was a little pricey, but I have been looking for it for so long that I didn't care. That's 2 more PS1 RPG's checked off, and about 30 left to go...

Just getting back to collecting vgs, used to post rarely back around 99-2001 in one of the newsgroups. So, what better way to reintroduce myself than list my weekend finds.

Being new to North Carolina, I headed to a flea market and got 4 NES games:

Mega Man 4
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Muppet Adventure
Tom and Jerry

It was $10 total, not great, but the dealer said he was expecting to have 150 more in next weekend (and I had been looking for ANY Mega Man game that wasn't jacked up in price by the vendor).

Haven't gotten a chance to post anything lately (been too busy) but this is what I've gotten over the past week or two:

from fellow DPer Vectorman0:
GBA:
Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga (NFR cart)
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (complete)
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (sealed)
GB:
Magical Drop

From trades on other forums:
GBC:
Shadowgate Classic
Tiny Toons Adventures 2: Montana's Movie Madness
Game & Watch Gallery 3
N64:
Pokemon Stadium

Also, went to E.B. today and picked up:
Wizards N' Warriors II: Ironsword (NES) - $0.99
Hey You Pikachu! (N64) - $1.99

Will try to post a picture in a bit.

Went out to buy a book actually at Bookman's, and of course did some hunting while I was in there:

A+ Guide - 20$....saved myself 40, heh

2600 - Strawberry Shortcake - .50
PC - Icewind Dale (complete) - 8

Icewind is nice and mint and includes everything. Man, I've been on one hell of a Black Isle kick lately. After Planescape, I think I'll load up this one ;D.

Wow. I haven't added to this sort of thread forever.

Nice AES btw.

Genesis 3 bucks each
World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
Spider-Man
Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco: Tides of Time
Joe Montana II: Sports Talk Football
Pebble Beach Golf Links
Adventures of Mighty Max
Bram Stoker's Dracula

PS1 5 bucks each
Suikoden (yay)
Legend of Lagaia

NES 2 bucks each
SMB3
SMB

These NES purchases need to be explained. I think I am the only person on earth who has had a hard time picking up either SMB2 or SMB3 at a fair price. Every time I've run into someone selling any SMB2/3 carts in the wild, they want at least 8 for it (actually, 8 was the lowest I ran into until today for either SMB2 or SMB3 loose...). I finally ran into a guy selling a SMB3 for 2 bucks. As a token of thanks (in my own twisted logic), I also picked up a SMB cart (one of about 10 in his pile). I didn't need to buy it, but I felt bad taking the only non-SMB1/SMB-DH cart in his pile. Anyone know what I mean? *shrug*

I was actually awake and lively enough on Sunday this week to hit my first boot sale of the year - nothing particularly special, but I did pick up a boxed N64 with 8 boxed games and an expansion pack for £15, and a minty boxed PSone with a couple of games for £6 (aswell as a nice bundle of LPs for about a tenner :) )
Should be able to recover my expenditure by selling a couple of the N64 games and the expansion pack... :)

By itself? Probably £10-£15 (ie: as much as I paid for the whole lot :D)

I'll be selling mine along with a complete DK64 though, which seems to bring in around £20 as a bundle.
