I have never really given this system much thought due to its ridiculously high prices. Well, now I’m thinking about finally picking one up. I have a few questions though. I notice there are many Japanese systems going for less $$ on EBAY. Other than the power converter issue it there anything else about the systems? Are US titles not compatible on Japanese units (and the other way around)? Should I stick with a more expensive US unit? One last thing, I notice this unit has a memory card slot, is this needed like on the PS1 or is it optional? Any thoughts and advice is very welcome and helpful.

You dont need a memorycard to play the games, the same goes with PSX. You dont have to have a memorycard :)
For the games, yes, you can play all AES games on the neo geo. It doesnt have any zones. So if you buy the game in USA, Europe or Japan it will still work.
Afaik, the japanese AES system have red blood and more bounce on the boobs hehe. So I guess it doesnt matter where you buy the Neo Geo, but if you want red blood and more bounce go for a japanese system.

Power converter should be fine. All the games you play on it will come up in japanese. Regions for NeoGeo are only for language (from what I understand)
Do you speak Japaneze?
If you buy the one from japan....all the games will
be in japaneze no matter what country the games
were made for.
If you buy the American version....all games will
be in English no matter what country the games
were made for.
also, I have a memory card and I have never used it.
Good luck

This brings me to my next question, for a guy who is not a huge fan of fighting titles, what other game are there to get? I really don’t want to blow big $$ on a system and find no games that are worth playing. Are titles like Crossed Swords, Magician Lord and NAM 1975 worth the admission fee? Just wondering.
By the way, thanks for the replies, they’ve proven to be very helpful.

Depends on what kind of games you like.
There are some great shooters like the Metal Slug series, Pulstar, Blazing Star, Twinkle Star Sprite.
Awesome puzzle game Magical Drop 3. Then more action with Nam and Shocktroopers 2nd Squad. Some good flying action with Sonic Wings.....
btw I wouls get the japanese version since you have full bounce effects on Mai, and often uncut blood.
I am not a big fighter fan but here are some games that I have had a lot of fun with
1 aero fighters 2
2 baseball stars
3 cyber lip
4 football frenzy(just for kicks...its not a great football game
5 ghost pilots
6 league bowling(our family favorite)
7 metal slug 1 2 and 3
8 nam 75
9 wind jammers
10 shock troopers 2
there are more that I enjoy but these are my favorites

The Neo is all about fighting games, though there are of course good non fighting games there are not alot and the best ones are expensive. The best non fighting games in my and most anyones opinion on the Neo are the Metal Slug games and they are expensive, very expense, too expensive ...a rip off. :P
I would suggest going with a standup arcade machine or if you don't have room for one or can't find one, a consolized MVS. That way you can have any game on the neo at a good price, and nothing beats playing an arcade game on a cab. :D

Actually, I was thinking about doing that (the MVS route). I found this unit online, I know Id’ have to add a MVS to JAMMA adapter but does anyone know anything about this unit?

It's great if you don't have the time to build one...but if you want a better and cheaper route, make your own or get some professional to do it,
