With many RPGs out there there must be one that makes you feel right at home. It may be your friends in the game, the mood, the houses, structure, storyline, etc. What RPG makes you feel good? An RPG that you can return to at any time an play again from the begining to end. What RPG would you star in and fit perfectly in? Is there an RPG that seems it's based of your life? I guess the question I'm trying to ask is:

What's your RPG and Why?

My RPG, without a doubt, is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. It's not based on my life, or contain any aspect that I might even connect to an event, person, or memory to my life. However, I just find this great warmth in my heart when ever I think about playing it, it just takes back to a better time in my life, just sitting around dedicating a summer of my life to this game, it's just the mindset I have when I play this game. It was my first RPG, and it holds a special place in my heart.

Based on your life??? Unless you consider the Sims as an RPG, then there aren't many "based on your life" RPGs, aside from maybe Earthbound -- RPGs in which I like the world, yes, but RPGs that feels like my life? No.

Anyway, "my" RPG of choice is Neverwinter Nights. I just fell in love with it, and for me, it eclipses any console RPG I've ever played, even though I do love console RPGs. Why do I love NWN? I don't know. It must be the customization, the fact that the character you play can equally be a man or a woman, without any kind of "female characters form a minority that oughta be more limited than male characters" type of attitude. And there's the fact that the same player-character is really, really customizable. Story-wise, it's epic enough for me (and I've yet to play either expansion pack, or any mod!).

My favorite RPG is Earthbound. It starts of in a normal community with schools, houses, stores and many many people to interact with. Earthbound towns hold many secrects and side quests that are great. Even though the graphics are not 3D I still love them. Actually it was the simple graphics that attracted me to this game. Pictures like these are my favorite thing in Earthbound:

A simple house with a simple kid out to save the world. Along the way you encounter many friends that will help you in your conquest of the game. I think these friends are very well written and placed in the game. The ability to equip bats and pans is just great and funny. The game itself takes about 60 hours to fully play through the first time. It's a great RPG. I guess I'ved made NESS' house my own.

It doesnt make me feel at home, but it is a very light hearted game (most of the time), of course this is FFIX on playstation. I love the characters, and fantasy theme, especialy with all of the castles and such.

Its a bit more comforting to play than FF7 because FF7 has alot more darker mood settings and story.

it's the original phantasy star. that game was years ahead of its time back in '88. it's about a girl out to restore freedom in the universe

Shining Force

It's one of the few games I can just play repeatedly without it ever getting old. And like a good book I can pick it up at any point in the game and just start playing without missing a beat. It's not the best RPG ever, it's not even the greatest tactical game out, but it's my game.

I feel similarly about Rhapsody, and Princess Maker 2. (:

FFII and FFIII (or IV and VI if you prefer) always fill me with an unparalleled goodness. No other games can even come close for some reason or another. I hope beyond hope that the SNES Final Fantasy series gets some proper remake treatment on one of the portable systems. A graphically enhanced, streamlined trilogy on the DS or PSP would be a gift from the heavens.

I think that I am going to have to go with Shenmue on the Dreamcast *points to avatar*. I love this game so much, and I can play through it again and again with out ever getting tired of it. The aspect of exploration is fantastic. The mood of the game makes me feel at home.

Another vote for Earthbound. That game came out and transported me right back to when I was hanging out with my buddies back in ~1986. Haven't played it in years, but I'm sure if I did fire it up again it'd cue the flood of nostalgic memories of going on adventures with the old gang :(

Grandia 2 or Shenmue definately. I can play those anytime and not be bored.

The Dreamcast is the home to some of my best gaming memories. And to think I almost didn't bother getting one.

Morrowind.

It sucked me in like no other game, and didnt let go. I was literally obsessed with that game for a period of time, and it was probably part of the reason I had 12 missing assignments in my L.A class.

Well I would have to say Chrono Trigger,

When I play that it brings me back to when I was younger and just was able to play games all summer, it's just a great feeling playing that game, but I also hold FFIII/VI in the same regards, I just have a special feelings about both of those games.

Another vote for FFII ad FFIII, two of the best games ever made. My freshman and junior years of high school were devoted to these titles. Man, what great games. In my opinion, the pinnacle of 16-bit RPG gaming (although Super Mario RPG was a good one as well).

SaGa Frontier. A lot of people didn't like this game, but I was part of the handful that just absolutely loved this game. I loved all the graphics for this game, and I can pick it up at anytime, pick one of the characters, and just go through the game in one setting if I have to with that character.

Final Fantasy VIII (Another game that a lot of people didn't like) is another RPG that I really enjoyed. However, I'm not too sure if I can ALWAYS pick it up and just completely go through it. I mean, it was a great game, but SaGa Frontier is a game I can just pick up and play and have some great fun with whenever I want.

Morrowind. Too damn obsessive. I've beaten it two or three times and I've made the same character basically each time. I tracked down and found every artifact, installed tons of plug ins, ect. Haven't been so immersed by a game like that in a long time.

This is a great thread....and for an RPGer it's also a tough one!!

Hmmm.....even though it most certainly doesn't have the DEPTH of a typical RPG it most certainly has more longevity. My vote for "feel-good RPG" HAS to go to Phantasy Star Online. I've been playing that game for the last 5 years. It just feels so familiar.

As far as a turn-based RPG goes, even though I've been playing RPGs for many years, my vote would go to one of the newest ones. Lord Of The Rings The Third Age. The immersion factor is one of the highest I've ever seen. The battles are vicious and frenzied. A beautiful game.

I LOVE Saga Frontier. I'm actually trying to find a complete copy again. After being a bit let down with Final Fantasy VII, Saga Frontier came out and was pretty much 100% hardcore gameplay. I remember soon after finding out it was part of the same series as Final Fantasy Legend on the Gameboy of which part II is probably my all-time favorite black & white Gameboy game.

Grandia II. I used to come home from work, put that on, and within minutes I was snug and cozy and back in a wonderful world... Until I fell asleep playing it and usually woke up dead...

Breath Of Fire IV I really got into as well, and it was almost a shame when I got to the end.

Final Fantasy IX was pretty nice as well, due to it's relitively easy learning curve (Compared to previous FF games) and engrosing storyline!

For that feel-good feeling, I also like Soliel on the Mega Drive. It just has a warm glow to it!

Zelda: Minish Cap is also a nice game to snuggle down to and get absorbed into.

For me it would be Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy II (IV). Such fond memories from playing them as a kid take me back and give me the warm fuzzies.

Earthbound and Chrono Trigger, for sure. Playing them takes me back to the second grade when all was right with the world. Playing them always cheers me up when I'm feeling depressed. :)

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

The main hero even looked like me. It had you fight people to get your dream world. You also get to see how weak and useless most other humans are. I just loved it so much.

I have a certain sentimental value for the first Phantasy Star, Chrono Trigger and Saga Frontier(nice to see other people mention this one). Even though it's a newer one I also feel the same way about Fable.

yea call me a ff7 lover but thats the only rpg that i can play over and over again and feel i comforted in. i just get all the characters that were in that game. call me a girl or what but i still hate seeing the FMV of aerith/aeris dying. DAMN THAT SEPHIROTH!!! i just think that square did everything right in that game, and hated the changes they made in 8.
