View Full Version : Majora's Mask N64's buggiest Nintendo cart ever?

Is Majora's Mask typically so buggy? When I first booted up a used game, my inventory was filled with ocarinas and I had no hearts. Half an hour later the game froze after accessing some dialogue.
After restarting, two previously saved games were then visible in place of my game, so I erased those and started again. Yet another half hour lapses and the game freezes again.
I have the first party expansion part and the card edge of the game and N64 port are thoroughly clean. The label is the non-lenticular edition (later release). This is pissing me off.

I have never heard of that.
I DO know that the Gamecube version on the Collector's Edition disc has a tendency to freeze up which was really a pain in the ass since the save system was so unique. Nothing like spending a good 3 hours without saving and getting froze up.
By the way, HIGHLY underrated title in the Zelda series.

Underrated? It got some of the highest scores ever.

I've heard a good share of people who trash the game because it was so "different." It does have a "black sheep" marking to it.. regardless of how well it was reviewed in the press, etc.

Your cart is messed up if that's happening.
Oh and for the record Majora's Mask is not only the best Zelda game, but the best game ever made of all time too. I love Majora's Mask.

Then you must've been talking to the average Zelda dufuses :P
Personally I think it's one of the all time best 3D Zelda's around :)

I didn't realise that was a common problem. I got my collectors edition second hand and I thought it was freezing because the disc was slightly scratched. If it happens to everyone that is a really bad design seeming as like you say sometimes you have to play for hours without being given the opportunity to save. I only bought it for Majora's Mask because I already had the other games. It's a real pain that it's a shoddy version.

Just see if you can bring it back and get a replacement. Of course, if you got it at a yard sale or something, you're pretty much screwed...

I thought the first run of n64 carts where recalled due to being buggy? Can anyone confirm this? maybe you got one of those?

Are you positive it's not the expansion pack that's causing the problem? Maybe you just have a fulty pack or it's not connecting right.

I have a first run cart and have never had a single issue.
Perhaps he got a cart that someone GameSharked the smeg out of. At least, thats what it looks like to me.

Pretty sure that's not the case, I can play through Perfect Dark without incidence, as well as several other games that don't specifically use the expansion pack's extra features.

Can you see the edge connector in the cartridge while the game is running?
If so, the game may be inserted upside down.

Yeah, it's pretty common. It has to do with the seem-less loading that was programmed into the emulation(?) for Ocarina of Time.. since Majora used the extra RAM pack there's obviously more to load at times. The freezing is typically caused by going to a new area to fast before the game had time to load it into internal memory. This is the EXACT same freezing bug from Metroid Prime (being too fast for the seem-less loading).

What's that mean then? How does one tell which is which?
Also, are you on about the PAL game, or the NTSC version?
And isn't there a warning on the collector's edition that states that Majora's Mask doesn't run 100% properly? Or is that just relating to the game's sound?

I just checked and the only thing it warns about is a sound irregularity. Funny thing is I never noticed anything wrong with the sound. Guess I was too busy getting pissed off everytime I had to redo a section.

A lenticular print is a graphic that alternates depending on the angle you view it, they tend to have a ridged plastic covering which facilitates the illusion.
This is the NTSC version I'm talking about, I believe the PAL releases didn't feature any of this, which frankly in my opinion is a little gaudy to be considered a 'special edition.'

This would be my guess too. The inventory problems in particular and some of the other random wackiness could indicate the save file has been sharked beyond redemption. I suppose since it allows you to mess with otherwise unreachable addresses that some changes might persist even in empty or reset save files. Anybody else ever see this happen in another game?

Ocarina of Time had glitches like this, but if I remember, you had to do things like pull out the cart slightly to get them to occur. Perhaps somebody tried similar tricks with Majora's Mask and damaged the cart?
