OK, here's the story. Got a brand new Win XP machine, latest version of MAME installed, ROMs in place, and everything's dandy.

I've also acquired a no-name PS2-to-USB controller adapter; according to the game controller diagnostic in Win XP, it works like a charm, no matter what I plug into it: PS2 controller, PS1 controller, or PS1 Blaze arcade-style joystick (the whole reason I bothered to get the adapter in the first place). The adapter came with no drivers, but the PC recognizes it immediately when I plug it in.

Now, when I get into MAME, no matter how I have mame.ini configured, it's only recognizing movement on the X axis (left-right). No vertical / Y-axis movement registers. All the buttons are working fine.

Anyone else had this problem and can you share how you got around it? I'm literally just this one step away from arcade nirvana. :(

I had a similar problem w/ a set up as you describe (I had two USB connectors for a Blaze twin shock). In certain games I couldn't move to the right. The weird thing was, in the MAME control settings it recognized the controller, it just didn't work in some games (most memorably Galaga and R-Type). When I updated MAME the problem was solved, so I would say try updating or try an earlier version.

OK, tried updating and it didn't fix the problem. I've also tried the RetroZone 2600-compatible-to-USB adapted I bought at CGE and it seems to have the same problem. :?

Update DirectX lately?
