being one of the largest genres of gaming, i'd imagine that the fps pool has grown quite stagnant. for these reasons, i'd like to know which games (preferably console-oriented) have no distinguishing features, however small or badly-inserted into gameplay. (ie, some nifty weapon or gimmick that stands out amongst the masses).

You're asking what first-person shooters bring nothing new to the table, and yet your examples suggest you want to discuss the games that stand out in the genre?

Which is it?

I haven't finished Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (GBA), but so far it seems to be a bog-standard FPS. Maybe someone will correct me later in the thread.

I think that the entire "novelty" of the game is that it's a well executed (albeit not innovative) FPS for the GBA.

What did Halo 2 have (online multiplayer aside) that Halo didn't?

Some kind of sword related action? I dunno, never played it.

Ecks vs. Server is a GBA game, a FPS on that little console IS bringing something new to the table.

Doom 3 was nothing new, just eye candy.

I hope no one suggests XIII either, I thought that was a marvel and a great new kind of action FPS.

Mace Griffin was okay, but was completely standard fare. Worth the time for fans of the genre, but completely unremarkable.

Then there's all those WWII games.

It depends on what you mean with "new". Afaik Doom 3 is one of the first FPS games that supports 3dcards with 512mb ram.

- Lotsa new weapons
- Vehicles that can be destroyed
- Online play (most importantly)
- etc.

Not the most innovative game in the world, but it did enough to warrant its' presence.

well not entirely like your saying doom 3 was just eyecandy because it had an awesome atmosphere for the game, and it was great game in general,

I will say Project Snowblind brings nothing new, but it just does everything so well. It executes perfectly! I love the fast pace action!
I would like to say though that FPS's need veichles in it, I like the co-op mode through the mission as well. HALO does that great, but aside from that, I can not see why people think HALO is so perfect? Damn good game, but not the god of FPS like alot of people think.

Agreed. Doom 3 has something that Halo will never have...the element of FEAR. I've never had a FPS make me jump as much as I did playing that game. When you're reluctant to turn the corner or go through the next door in a video game...the atmosphere works.

Halo 2 brought Dual wielding into the mix. Also stated was the inclusion of new weaponry (which happens in FPS sequels because they want us to play the new games) and a new massive take on Online play. What its done with XBL is nothing short of amazing. The execution of clans and rankings for XBL has been far and away the biggest and best push Live has gotten in years.

Ballistic: Ecks Vs Sever was a good take on the whole 2 sides of things, Ecks chasing Sever and playing the same levels just on the different side of things was an intrigueing function. Too bad the game was a very hard to play GBA title.

XIII was a very good story driven shooter and was the first in the Cel Shaded style.

The story line in Doom3 was very nice and its beauty and scare factor (monsters jumping out even deep into the game can still scare the shit out of me).

There are alot of good shooters, and just as many mediocre ones that shoot well, or do this or that well, just they do it the same (or a little worse) than some of the bigger named titles on consoles and PC.

The thing is that Doom came out for the GBA nearly a year before Ecks vs. Sever did. And there may have been other FPS games before it as well. Dunno on that point.

Wait--are you saying that Doom 2 had nothing new? I mean, there was the Super Shotgun, Hell Knight (OK, just a wussier Baron of Hell), Arachnotron, Pain Elemental (perhaps the first FPS enemy to spawn new enemies), Revenant (maybe the first FPS enemy with guided missile shots), Mancubus, and Arch-Vile (probably the first FPS enemy to revive dead enemies).
