I think the Fatal Frame series is fantastic but with RE and Silent Hill its tuff to break out from behind the shadows.
My favorite of the two released so far is 2 althought I'm looking forward to 3 since it has some cross over to the first one. I think their also making a movie based on the first one.
At any rate I was just wondering if anyone elese thought this series was as fantastic as I did.
Can't wait for Fatal Frame 3 : The Tormented

Yep I love it. IMO its the scariest SH series out there, especially FF1. In RE or SH you can memorize the game and run through it the same very time. In FF you will have ghosts jump out at you with no wawrning randomly when you enter a room. Its much more intense since you never get any rest or predictablility.
I likes me some Fatal Frame- only ever played the first.
I got through it once already, but began it again not long ago. I was home alone, playing it in the dark (I think it was even raining outside) & just at the part where I was checking out the closet, I heard someone say "Heyyy..." from the stairs! A chill went up my spine, then I realized it was from the surround sound speaker behind me (near the stairs).
I dont think I'll ever forget that...it's right up there w/ the first time the dog crashed through the window in RE. & dont tell me that's a spoiler! :P

I got REALLY into the Xbox version, getting pretty far. I was really good at zero shooting all the ghosts and had tons of exp points for the camera, and had every single "unqiue" ghost shot (ie, twisted neck girl falling off buliding, kid running past door) but I got to this one ghost that swings left and right as it moves through a hallway of doors and it kept kicking my ass over and over again. So I kinda got stuck there and never progressed.

The thing i like about Fatal Frame (Project Zero) is that the developers actually work hard on the atmosphere and they use scientific psycological information to mould the experience into something truely terrifying.
I'm really hoping that FF3 gets an xbox version (which it almost certainly will) because in the past the xbox version was the better version. Especially with FF2.

I really dig the FF series but I have to admit that I think the whole camera thing needs to be rethought. Its very unsatisfying...it just doesn’t do anything for me. I need something with a little more aggression behind it. I think the camera thing could work but they need to start from the drawing board IMO.

I think that's kind of the point. If you want to have a gun or a chainsaw, just play any other SH game out there.

I'm quite fond of the Fatal Frame series. Fatal Frame (1) was the first game I have played that actually scared the bejeezus out of me. I find it extreamly difficult to be scared at the other SH games... I mean sure, I jumped in my seat the first time the zombie dogs leap at you through glass in RE. But that was more of a startle than an actual scare. It's hard to be terrified by dead things that want to eat you when your better armed than the Montana Militia. Part of true fear, I belive, is the vulnerability and psychological battery that Fatal delivers in pure spades. IMO the zenith of the SH genre to date.

Yeah, the camera could fire Soul-Rockets. Or better yet ditch the whole camera thing completely and copy every other SH title by giving the teenage girl a chain-gun Vulcan Raven style... sweeet! That would be... teh kewl!!!11!
Seriously though, the camera is an integral part of the whole spookiness formula... I think they could make some of the upgrades a little better (read: more useful). But change the function of the camera too much and your messing with the whole vulnerability aspect I mentioned in my previous post... therefore cheapening the experience.

I just completed the first one, and I have to say I prefer it over any of the Resident Evil games. The only bit in any of the RE's that made me jump was in RE, where you'd be walking down a corridor and all of a sudden zombie arms would burst through the boarded up windows... After that, it was all plain sailing really, while FF1 had several bits in it that scared the hell out of me. Like Acidic_Pain said, being a young girl trapped in a haunted mansion with only a camera and a torch would be a hell of a lot scarier then being trapped in a mansion and being armed to the teeth.
Can't wait to play the second one. Won it off eBay last night :) And the third one is definately on my "to-buy" list.

I would like to see even more RPG elements. In fact I would like to see multiple cameras. Wouldn't that be neat? you could start with the old timey one and eventually get to a ultra modern digital one. You could even make it where certain ghosts can only be damged by certain cameras or only if you bought a certain upgrade.

I've got to disagree with you there. I think an ultra modern digital camera would kind of take away from the experience. The Old camera fits better with the whole concept of exorcising things becuse it has sort of an archaic feel. A brand spanking new one would just be too implausible. Besides with a film camera the concept is that ghost is trapped by the exposure, with a digital camera what would it mean when you deleted a saved image?
A digital just seems out of place to me.

I just watched the trailers again for Fatal Frame 3.
http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/adventure/fatalframezero/media.html
I aslo watched the Developer Interview and it sounds like each of the three playable characters will have different abilities with the camera along with some new features with the camera.
I'm sure the X-Box versions will be better but I hate waiting. I still want to pick up the X-Box version of 2 since I heard it had another ending.
Without spoiling anything has anyone played through 2 enough times to see all the endings (4 if you include the X-Box one) The default ending is one of the darker endings I've seen in a game.

Yeah if the game was set in the ancient locations the first two were in. Personally I would think it would be really interesting to have one set in a modern city. The story could be that the protagonist got sucked into the spirit world or something.

They're both really, really good games, but i'd recomend you cut your teeth on Fatal Frame first. It's got an incredibly creepy opening chapter and beside if you want to get into an series you should always start with the first game. But they're both really good games. 3 should me amazing as well.

I don't think you can really go wrong with either. They both play pretty similar. My preference is for number 2 but you might want to go with 1 since 3 is coming out and has the girl from the first one returning.

I have only ever played part one, and it is the only survival horror game I ever really got into enough to play through a second time. Very unique and atmospheric.
The thing that annoys me (rant warning), and this has nothing to do with the game itself, is the hypocricy of the mainstream reviewers and a lot of forum users in regards to SH games. If a game comes out that is a clone of RE, it gets ragged on for not being original, as it probably should be. But then when an original game like Fatal Frame or Clock Tower comes out it gets ragged on for not following the Resident Evil formula. WTF? I personally like how those serieses took the whole "vulrnerability" route. Like somebody said, it's a lot scarier when you are armed with water or a camera than being armed to the teeth. And it did not affect the gameplay in either game, both are still fun to play. And I always have to tip my hat to any company who will listen to its fans instead of EGM or the bottom dollar. They keep making them without trying to make them more commercial

You are SO right! I've never really realized that until you pointed it out. I've played most of the games in the SH (my favorite) genre & most reviews I read of each usually mention RE in some way, shape, or form.
Recently I started playing Countdown: Vampires again, an admittedly blatant RE ripoff & most likely Bandai's attempt to get in on the genre. Ive seen some absolutely scathing reviews of this game (one EGM reviewer gave it a 2/10!!!) but in playing the game, it's no worse than any of the early RE games. Yeah, it could've looked a bit better, & it has some crummy voice acting & glaring grammatical errors (what the hell's a "stun globe"?), but so did RE2 (which is the reason I didnt like THAT game so much), even though RE2 itself is highly regarded as the favorite game in the series.
Hey, Countdown: Vampires even comes on 2 discs! It has some unique features- well, some that set it apart from RE2, anyway.
1. Since the story takes place in a casino, there are slot machines scattered about to play at your leisure for fun, or to win money...
2. to buy food & drinks. There are even bottles available to store up to 3 drinks, saving inventory space.
3. You can "save" vampire victims by dousing them w/ white water after shooting them.
4. You can dual-wield weapons, in a way. You have 2 active weapon slots- one must always be the anaesthetic dart gun, which you use on vampires if you want to save them. The other can be any firearm (of several) you wish, & you can switch between them "on the fly" during play w/out visiting the inventory screen.

Just started playing Fatal Frame (Xbox) in ernest about three days ago and am loving it, while at the same time being terrified for an entire gameing session is a little exhausting.
I had this game for about a year and a half, but it was the Korean version (Zero for PS2). It's just as scary, and though you have some idea of what's going on (voice overs are in english) everything in print is in Korean characters. All those research notes and scraps were just babble. Really enjoying it now.
For Fatal Frame II Xbox is there a director's cut and a non-director's cut? Which is the preferred version? (I won't make any assumptions.)

Directors cut hands down. It's got an extra mode, a few more ghosts and a couple of other little fun tricks. It was released several months after the PS2 version.
Now go get it... Go... Go on... What the hell are you still reading for? Get yo punk ass out there and get it! LOL
Seriously you'll love it.

FYI, Fatal Frame 1 is based on true story, over in US, you don't hear a lot of terrifying ghost stories, during my trip in Asia, I heard many ghost stories that the grim reaper resemble what you see in FF1, I'd be scared to play this game in Asia becasue you can draw ghosts simply playing too much of it, no joke.
For those not familiar with the story behind, there's a house outside Tokyo that many were murdered in the house, it's so haunted that people are scared to go there (or just getting close to it) during broad daylight. When I was in Taiwan, there're a few houses that had similar tragedies and are haunted the similar way. In Asia, there're certain places you shouldn't go, some even during the day, that you could end up dead. Very frightening!
