I object. There's nothing more cooler than the Ghaleon punching puppet you get when pre-ordering Lunar 2.

I have a "pointer" that looks almost exactly like that. I went to a seminar once and they were using it to point at the computer screen and everytime they brought it out I laughed out loud. I mean, I laughed so often that the people started getting annoyed with me, but it was just so funny, that little pointing hand on the end of a stick. At the end of the seminar they even gave it to me since I enjoyed it so much. I still have it in my desk drawer, let me see if I can take a picture of it with my Palm real quick.

And yes, it's been up my nose.

I've got an extra Ghaleon punching puppet if somebody is looking to buy or trade.
Also, this stylus thing reminds me of the "controller" for that Japanese butt poking arcade game. I want to use this thing for Nintendogs. "Did you pee in the corner? OBJECTION!!!"

My favorite preorders are disks with unique (not just demo) content. I love the Rouge Squadron 3 disk with the Star Wars Arcade game on it. Of course theres always the Zelda disks. You don't see this sort of thing too much on systems other than the Cube and I think its a shame.

Here's the anecdote behind the puppet, as written by yours truly for a 2002 magazine article. (I may have posted this same text in a long-dormant thread, but I'm too lazy to check.)
"During my three-year stint at Working Designs, I decorated my desk with a slew of goodies I’d been sent by videogame companies over the years. One of those attention-getting presents was a punching dinosaur, sent out to promote the 3DO version of the Atari coin-op fighting game Primal Rage, in which various prehistoric beasts played rough with each other.
"One day, WD president Victor Ireland saw me entertaining my coworkers with the puppet and, rather than fire me or call the local mental institution, came up with the idea of turning the Lunar series’ most popular character into a boxing fool.
"Ghaleon’s head-mold was sculpted in Japan by a group called Heavy Gauge, under the direction of Lunar’s character designer, and it’s simply stunning; with his sunken cheeks, flour-shaded skin, and reptilian red eyes, Ghaleon is the plastic embodiment of his videogame self.
"I wrote the copy on the back of the box, which states in part, 'We know that Ghaleon looks a little scary, but we promise that, unlike most other puppets, this one will not come to life and try to suffocate you in your sleep.'
"WD intended to follow up Ghaleon with a second Lunar character, Dragonmaster Alex (whose prototype is pictured on the box), but the initial promotion was such a flop, and the production costs so high, that Alex weren’t never made."
Also, there are several pics of the puppet rolling off its Asian assembly line in the Lunar 2 strategy guide.

Alex prototypes were made though, right? I remeber you saying something about lighting them on fire or something.

Yep, there were a few Alex protos. We never lit any on fire--I believe you're thinking of sisko, who lit a Ghaleon on fire--but we mutilated and molested them in all sorts of ways. I recall playing Alex-Head Baseball with a poster tube as the bat, for example. There's probably only one or two fully intact protos left.
There's also a one-of-a-kind and surprisingly adorable "Beanie Baby Ghaleon" that we received from the first Asian company we contacted to produce the puppets, which turned out not to know what the hell we were asking for. I assume Victor's still got that one. (I was so enchanted that I wanted to ditch the puppet concept and roll with the BBs, but Victor wisely overruled.)

Reviving dead topic.

Even though there has been a ton of cool preorder items like Shadow Hearts, Zelda Ocarina of Time Master Quest, etc, etc, etc. My favorite preorder has always been with Xenosaga 2. Now Xenosaga 2 itself is one of the crappiest RPG titles on the PS2, just with amazing graphics and decent story. That doesn't change the fact that the preorder item was badass.
The preorder was the Xenosaga movie DVD. It was about four hours long and there was actually some stuff cut out of it. A couple parts at the beginning, the part with the characters at the beach which truly gave nothing to the storyline, and some stuff was actually cut short. However, I love it solely because the original Xenosaga has one of the best storylines in a game ever. Alot of really nice action scenes, pretty cool moments, etc. Sure parts before boss battles skipped straight to the end of it, but it didn't ruin it, and it actually looked like the Ziggy versus Margulis scenes fit perfect if the battle wasn't there.
The only bad thing is that because so much was fit on that single DVD, the quality was lower, plus some of the cooler parts were shortened. Almost every part with Virgil was either shortened or removed which kindof sucked because for the very short time he was on the original, he was one of my favorite characters and it really seems that atleast half of the parts he was in were the ones that were shortened(basically 50% of the removed data was in the beginning.)

Midway used to throw in an extra game - such as the aforementioned Shadow Hearts and Midway Arcade Treasures 2 and 3 - as a preorder bonus, and I thought that was pretty cool. It would have been cool to see more companies follow their lead - preorder a game, get something they published about 2 or 3 years ago that's in the budget bins now - but it was probably too costly.
And of course, who didn't like Ocarina of Time/Master Quest?
Also, the preorder bonus for the PS2 version of SpyHunter was a 1/64 diecast G-155 Interceptor vehicle. As I really liked the game, I wish I could find one.

Remember the good old days? T-shirts, posters, full musics CDs?
The last pre-order goodie I got was the Nuka Cola bottle opener for Fallout 3. Before that was the Best Buy crappy tank toy for Gears of War 2.
Favorite all-time pre-order goodie was the Shadow the Hedgehog beanie
Coolest pre-order item ever was the Helena mini-figure for DOAX2. I have her just in front of the Big Daddy on top of my desk.

The link's not working for me. Is it just a finger on a stylus? I've never played Ace Attorney, but a gavel would have been cool.

I have currently over 200 promo items, I have worked in gaming retail for fourteen years. I think some of the coolest promo items I've seen and probley the strangest are the ones given directly to the store. I have a stuffed conker in a tank, a giant pill box that cures squirrel madness (it had the N64 game, a t-shirt, a prescription bottle full of jelly beans and a contest to go to the playboy mansion), a gundam beach towel and a wii ski thermos, with coco and a ski lift pass. Just some funny stuff I thought I'd share.
Oh and unlike some people who work at game stores I actually reserved all my titles, I think it's wrong to take away from people who reserve games.

That all sounds like some really rad preorder bonuses. I've been checking GameStop ads recently, and a lot of the "bonuses" are complete bullshit. Intangible stuff like codes to unlock features or characters. I don't know how it actually works, but I'd assume you could just look for the codes on the internet later on....right?

The Black box that came with the DS Castlevania was HOT! It's a black box with a fake wax seal. In the box is a Art book with the time line of every Castlevania game with a little synapse of the storys. A music CD and a stylus that said Castlevania. Might be something else I'm forgetting. But that is the best one I've gottn.
On a side note my friend got the 100$ collectors edition of RE5. It had a lot of neat stuff. But the feel of the stuff was kinda cheap?

For the same reason they killed Jesus. People just couldn't handle Zach and his message.
