Been thinking about this a lot lately.
What was the last game you ran across that you didn't know existed?
Even after spending so much time around video games, working in a video game store and whatnot, you think you've seen it all, but I just ran into a game I had never seen before for PS2!
Everblue 2. It's a deepsea diving game that's a cross between a simulation and an RPG. Seems kinda neat and I'm debating grabbing it.
So what has caught you by surprise? Probably best to keep it to the current or last 2 generations, because I think most of us could be surprised by an Atari game or some game for an obscure system we never heard of hehe.

I have never heard of eJay Clubworld for the PS2 until I walked into a GameStop with a 10$ gift certificate. 8-)
It is actually a very cool game if you are into techno/trance/house. Basically, you "travel" to various clubs around the world to arrange and mix music from all different styles. I feel I got my 8$ worth out of it.
Come to think of it, I probably buy more games that I "discover" than games that I have an intent on buying....interesting...

Two days ago, I ran into Disaster Report for PS2. The game came out over 2 years ago, and I have never seen it nor known of its existance. For $5, I picked it up :)

Are those the characters from all those prints you see? Very soft artwork... my best friend would know

Sitting Ducks?

The game is based off the edutainment CG cartoon which is actually fairly amusing. I've seen this around several places, and have always been debating whether or not to snag it. Is it worth picking up for $15?

Metal dungeon for the xBox;
I discovered that it was a steaming pile of crap, I want my $8 back.

Punky Skunk
I saw it in a store one day for $5, said WTF is this when I saw the rather crude cover art, and then wen't home to discover it was an R7. I wen't back the next day to pick it up. It's a pretty decent platformer, but nothing in it stands out, very run of the mill.

I just clued in on Yager for Xbox a couple of days ago (It's been out since October 2004). Since I'm big on mission-based combat flight-sim games, I was psyched when this one showed up on my radar.

That one caught me by surprise a few months or so ago! Came traded in with another one... Something about steel and magic, can't remember it now

City of Lost Children for PS1. I spent 10 minutes verifying that it wasn't some sort of import before I dropped the $5 on it. I had honestly never heard of it before.

Tempest 3000 on NUON. I read about it in the DP guide and it took me by suprise since I loved the original arcade version. I bought a NUON just to play tempest, now I am just awaiting for my controller to arrive so I can play :D

Pyschic Force for PSX. I had never seen it over 6 years of gaming retail. Although I fancied myself as pretty knowledgable when it comes to PSX games, I had never heard of it, either. Turns out to be an R7.
$3.99 complete? Sure, I'll take that.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. I never heard of this game before, and a couple of months ago my little sisters boyfriend offered to sell me this game for $25. I checked the going price on this, saw it was between 50 and 75 bucks and bought it. I haven't been able to put it down since.
It's the first game in a while where i can find myself still playing it until midnight and wondering how time went by so fast.

VICE: Project Doom
I actually read about this game in Hardcore Gamer. They said it's an under-appreciated gem and all that. I've yet to play it, so they could be wrong. But still, it feels strange that I've never even heard of it.
It was released shortly after the SNES, though, so that might explain how it slipped under the radar.

The only game I've "discovered" was a Jurassic Park game on the PS2. I forget the exact name of it. You had to make a dinosaur park, like Theme Park World. I considered buying it as it was £5 but I've had bad experiences with that style of game, so I didn't.

For me...
ChoroQ - Saw it for $10 and decided to pick it up. Hadn't heard anything about the game prior other than knowing about the Playstation and N64 games. Turns out to be an awesomely fun game that got slammed by the critics :( Because of it I hunted down and found Road Trip today.
before that...
Katamari Damacy - I was ordering Shikigami no Shiro 2 LE for Dreamcast and was just poking around Play-Asia's site for something else to throw in the order to make the shipping worthwhile and stumbled on the cover of a new release called "Katamari Damacy". Looked at some screenshots, said fuck it, and ordered it. Hundreds of screenshots, videos, and monster threads later, it finally came out in the US and thankfully was a huge sleeper hit. I like to think that I played some part in its success :(

I was out at EB one day and ended up buying, Curse: The eye of isis, simply because i'd never heard of it before. It's not the best game, but it's not terrible either. Just sort of average.

Lode Runner on PSX.
Bought it a few months ago for $5, never got around to playing it... but a few days ago while looking for games to sell I popped it in.
It's back on the shelf now :)

Its been a while, but I would say DC "Jet Grind Radio". I was sort of into the skating scene (well, just out of it), and I ran across it for like $15 bucks at some store so I picked it up not knowing what to expect. I played it for weeks on end until I just couldn't make it any further. A very good game IMO

Battlesport for the 3DO. I passed this one over during my initial 3DO phase because I thought "Ehh, it's just Ballblazer." Picked it up recently because I thought "Yeah, it's Ballblazer!"

Alot since I drift in and out of gaming. From 2000-2004 I wasn't playing games much so I missed alot of releases. I guess thats why I feel the next gen is approaching too quickly.

Easy.. Eggerland for the Famicom FDS! (I don't have an FDS system but I play it in emus.) I really like Lolo, and I never even heard of this game, let alone that it was in fact... Lolo w/ an overhead explorable world. Quite a nice surprise just the other month :)

I played Robocop vs. Terminator for the first time today, can't believe I never played it before. It's a very cool game, sort of like the Robocop arcade game, but very fast paced with a lot of platform stuff (in a good way), cool weapons, and gore. I'm surprised no one ever turned me onto it before, I'd always heard it wasn't that good. Reminds me a bit of Alien 3.

I missed out on Klonoa when it first came out because I wrote it off as another crappy platformer on the playstation. After playing part 2, I knew I had to track down the first one, both fantastic games.
In regards Everblue 2, it is indeed worth picking up. Unique game, actually pretty good.
