Sorry if this was posted already, but I couldn't find another topic covering this.
I think it can be bad news, as there are also good third party accessoires availble without license which no won't come out or will be more expensive. Even worse is that some kinds of accessory are banned for getting a license. What is other people's opinion about this step of M$.

I don't see that as ALL bad. People around here are constantly complaining about 3rd party controllers burning out their consoles or their joystick ports or their rumble features on their systems. Maybe if there's a little quality control we won't have as much of that in the future.

yeah I have to agree with you on this one . This will not affect me one bit becuase I won't buy third party stuff unless the don't make it from the first party. LOL
I just don't and probally never will like the quality of most 3rd party stuff. x_x
Then again I have had my share of shoddy first party S controllers from M$ . I had one of the sticks wigout last night playing forza and I wanted to launch it through the wall. It kept making the car go to the side view and it got stuck there.

I see it as a really good thing. For example with the PS2 most of the unlisenced accesories aren't very good. I've had lots of trouble with mat catz and hip gear stuff. But the liscenced PS2 products, like Logitech's controllers are amazing. I own 2 of their wireless controllers and even though i paid twice the cost of the hip gear wirless ones i use to have, they were worth every single penny.

Damn. I was really hoping that I'd be able to use my Logitech Driving Force Pro wheel on the 360's USB. :(

Sounds like a good thing to me! I never buy anything other than 1st party accessories, everything else I've owned has been crap...wiped memory cards, broken controllers, etc. etc.
Meh, I've never had any problems with 3rd party items.
As for the 360 not excepting them, it will eventually. I don't remember what site it was on (I think IGN) but they will allow 3rd items to be made starting sometime in 2007.

From a business persspective it's a bad move I think. Didn't apple do a similar thing with their software back in the 80s/90s?
From a gamer's perspective :)

I'll bet this has nothing to do with quality control, and everything to do with mods on XBox live. No 3rd party. no Action replay etc.
Great move. Online will be way better.
I seem to remember MS warning 3rd party Manufacturers they would do this if action replay type stuff got out of hand a couple years back. Good on them for following through.

Yeah, same here. So much for our hopes of finally having an XBox wheel better than a spring loaded hula hoop for once. Argh.

Can't say that I am upset with this since I only buy 1st party. I have since I bought this memory card for my PS1 that had like 10x the amount of storage space on it. Fucking thing couldn't hold a save at all, and from what I read I was not the only one that had that problem.

Note that it doesn't say there will be no 3rd party items, only no unlicensed ones. It's possible that Mad Catz could potentially strike a deal with them.

IMHO, this strategy is all about the $$$.
This allows MS to force hardware manufacturers to pay licensing/royalties to produce hardware on the 360, otherwise the hardware won't work. In a way, it'll slightly offset the loss they take on each console unit.
It's good from a quality/compatibility standpoint, as stated earlier, you know it won't blow out your controller/USB ports, crap out on you, and prevent PAR and other such devices from enabling online cheating.
The only thing that scares me about it is that it almost seems like a monopolistic practice, but it's not so bad IMHO, (certainly not like EA's practices as of late).

This is another part of Microsoft's Total Computing scheme. Unlike Apple, who chargers a fee to use the logo on packaging, MS wants everyone down the line to pay themfor the simple right to make stuff for their OS/game system/whatever. Sure, we hate crummy accessories, but Mad Catz isn't even getting the chance to make decent acessories. Their contract is basically just for controllers. Wired controllers. If successful, it will do more bad than good for the industry.

I think we've covered the opinions that Microsoft licks the devil's underpants and Apple steals their designs from God himself enough times 'round these parts.

Good point...I agree. With the release of Halo 2, cheating and modding over on Xbox Live went absolutely through the roof. I'm sure Microsoft is willing to do whatever is possible to maintain the intergrity of Xbox Live.

I thinks its a Good and Bad thing. Usually 3rd party stuff are cheaply made and pretty poorly designed. But with the 360's usb ports I would love to use some of my computer controllers on the games.

It's not just the cheating. The absolute bottom line is that MS wants to start making money and this is one way to do it. Mad Catz won't be the only lisenced 3rd provider and i'm sure well will get an action replay eventually, once MS has figured out how to block it from effecting live.

Well in my expierence, EVERYTHING 3rd party sucks! It just isn't up to standard.
On my own personal opinion about it, they always are made cheap, VERY UGLY, and don't work good at all. I just can't stand 3rd party stuff. (There, I'm finished :))

i like this - im happy someone finaly picked up the ball on this
the only system i ever liked 3rd party controlers for was the PS1 (the mad cats 3$ controler was the best IMO i recently found an EB games selling used ones for 50 cents and i stocked up)
every other system had crapy 3rd party controlers
the only 3rd party controlers i throught were good are the driving wheels.
the most recent 3rd party controler i realy wanted to buy was the pelican green glowing controler for the xbox (i forgot the name) -- i got it, used it once, and was extreamly disapointed with it - the sensitivity was not the same as the 1st party
i dont know why i was so drawn to that controler becasue normaly i despise gimicks like that - but for some reason i realy realy liked that controler and was realy bummed i could not use it
so my policy of buying only first party controlers was reinstated
bummer
