View Full Version : What's your take of Madden '06?

This is for people that have had a chance to spend a little quality time with this game. Either on PS2 or XBOX.

My personal take is give me ESPN 2K6. But unfortunately, that isn't going to happen. So my next take is give me the XBOX 360 version.

I'm just not a fan of Madden on the current generation of systems. I feel like the game engine, no matter how many times they've refined it, just isn't up to par. The characters still seem kind chubby and cartoonish to me.

The new passing mechanism is ok, but it kinda makes things a little too complicated, especially with the XBOX controller. Trying to hit your receiver when you have to hit the little white button or the little black button is rather difficult.

So far, I'm not a huge fan of the running game either.

I just wish somebody could hack the Madden 93 Sega Genesis rom and put all the players and team names in the game. That would be freaking awesome. Or, maybe I'll just go back to playing the old NFL 2k series and wait another 8 years for their contract to expire.

eh, maybe Tiburon will do some magic on the 360 version this November, and I'll be back on the Madden bandwagon.

I'm not that interested, I might be being unfair for not playing it but... Isn't it pretty much the same thing as last year? and the year before? and so on and on.... LOL

It's too slow, and the 'vision' passing mechanic makes a two-player game totally pointless. Granted, you can turn it off, but at that point, you could just play last year's game with updated rosters.

I'd take NCAA any day over this.

I'd be willing to bet we'll get the same exact game... just with fancy cg cut-scenes (...sorta like the "footage" they've shown us already  ). I mean, there is a PC version of 06, isn't there? It looks almost exactly the same as what's running on the PS2, yet the modern PC is lightyears beyond what the current console platforms are capable of pulling off. So, why doesn't the PC version have all the slick graphics that are supposedly the biggest upgrade in the 360 version? (or at least more enhanced graphics, besides running in a higher resolution).

I bought ESPN NFL 2K5 last year and never got to play it too much for some reason so I'm going to just play it some more this fall. I won't be getting the new Madden game. Somehow, I don't think EA will be offering this for $20 or $30...

There's no question: EA's launch titles for all consoles are never really worth buying. They rush them (for whatever reason) and it shows. After seeing how clunky the PS2 NHL game looked at launch I decided I'd avoid their first efforts.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned: can you turn the new feature off at all? The cone of sight or whatever it's called? Has anybody tried?

I'm not in the market to buy the console version (I have 05), but I'm curious about the DS version. Anybody buy that?

i just hope you can update the rosters on the epsn game on xbox

after trying nfl 2k3 i couldnt stand EAs games

i remeber i gave it a try after seeing it for 3$ and imediatly got 2k4 and 2k5 after being released

ive always tried madden to make sure i had the better game (my friend will not look at anything else so thats my free source) and ive always felt the sega games were better

the only reason my friend sticks with madden is becasue he does not want to learn new controls

See Oobgarm's post above.

I'm not buying this one. I do have another question though: Does either last years' Madden or ESPN NFL2k5 update to the 2006 rosters? That would be my preferred way to go. I'm guessing no...

I'm not sure if Sega themselves could update the rosters, since that may be a grey area in term sof the licencing, but some 3rd party probably could.

I don't play sports, but I fell in love with 2k5. After spending 3 days with Madden 06, there is absolutely no soul to the game. 2K5 is and will be the superior product.

EA had two great PS2 launch titles, Madden--was it '01? I forget--and SSX. This year's version of Madden might have "no soul," but the first PS2 version was pretty mind-blowing. Madden and SSX weren't the PS2's #1 and #2-selling launch titles for no reason.

As for why launch titles are rushed, you can probably answer that question yourself after a moment's thought.

See Oobgarm's post above.

I *think* I started that reply, got distracted, and posted after Oobgarm did. That's my story and I'm sticking to it :)

I forgot about SSX, I guess because I was thinking strictly of the 'major' sports, and not anything else EA made. Thanks for making me clarify. (I actually bought SSX at launch and quite enjoyed it, so shame on me :) ).

I was also thinking specifically of their DS titles (football/golf). A golf game that doesn't use the stylus? And a football game that is the same (from what I heard) as the GBA version? No thanks, I'll wait. Which is why I'm asking about the 06 version - any good, does anybody know?

Oh I know why, I just didn't want to foster any more conversation along those lines because it doesn't matter why. Guess I failed :)

Well, I'M enjoying Madden 06. The interface is nice, I like the 'Superstar' mode, the game plays just fine to me, and the AI is defentily better over last year.

I only hope a roster update comes out soon. Why the hell is Teddy Bruschi a FREE AGENT and not on the IR for the Pats? :hmm:

I haven't seen a single pic of the PSP version of Madden 06, but I would be curious to see what it looks like on there.

As for ESPN NFL2K5 and the rosters, if you've got a ton of time, you could go in and update the rosters yourself. You just need to look at the current depth charts on nfl.com for the teams and get them as accurate as possible. You would have to do trades and stuff to get it right.

I didn't have Xbox Live last year, and I had to go in and alter the rosters to get them as accurate as possible. Then when you are done, you save the rosters.

Well I have purchased the game
did not intend to and wasn't

But it seems like a good game and yes it would be easier and cheaper to play 05 but I like the new gameplay mechanics and Graphics

Just my opinion 8-)

MY take on the game is that I wish that I had enough football skills to play it.....

I own some football games on the Dreamcast. I pop them in, choose two teams, crank up the precipitation, drop the temperature and let the AI play the AI. It's like having a game on any time you want one.

Ah well.....I can play ESPN NHL 2K5 !!! LOL

on PS2 you can connect your Psp if you have madden on PSP and play the game on the go and then resume on PS2
that is if you would pay for practicly the same game

but hey it has a DEMO of Burnout Revenge which Rocks :rocker:

I really like all of the features, such as mini-camp and superstar mode. However, the gameplay is god awful, in my opinion, when compared to NFL 2k5. The vision cone would be awesome if only it was in NFL 2k5. The offensive line blocking seems to be on and off during a drive. It's like I said, take Madden 06. Then add 2k5's gameplay. Throw the vision cone in there, and you'd have a damn good football game.

'05 was alright. I'm not 100% sure If I'll be buying '06 though. I just keep thinking "Do I really need another sports game that will be worth 50 times less in a year.

I own the PS2 version, I'm loving it as the new passing cone and SS mode bring alot to the game, offense the truck stick is sweet, also the hit stick is still there.

Also online mode is pretty sweet, quite addicting if I say myself

I love this years edition, own all the Madden's on the PS2 and love them all for different reasons.

If anyone read Penny Arcade on Monday, they had clips of what Madden 06 was advertised to look like at E3 and then what it really looks like based on a video from EA that's available through Burger King. You can check the news piece out here (http://egm.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3143540)

I said before I'd comment on the DS version, so here I will.

I have to admit that at first I was a little disappointed. But that was my fault really - it's hard to play a scaled back version after enjoying the console versions (I have 2005 for Xbox). After re-evaluating it, though, I'm definitely happy with it.

It seems that everytime I play a handheld version of a major console release, it's incredibly slow (you'd think they'd learn). 06 doesn't play slow at all, which is what I finally realized made it a decent port. What's still disappointing are the graphics - I imagine the PSP blows this away graphically.

The touch screen stuff is a bit gimmicy - you don't really need it except for kicking, but I have to admit kicking seems a bit more fun this way than the usual method. Set your height with a slider, then move from bottom to top at whatever angle and as fast as you can and away it goes.

Overall I'd give it a 7 I think. It's nowhere near what you're going to get on a console, but for football on the go it scratches my itch.
