View Full Version : Do you "beat" a game, or "finish" it?

Other gamers always say "I beat Contra", or I can beat Double Dragon on 50 cents". In magazines like Nintendo Power, they'd say "finished", so I thought that sounded more professional for some reason. "I finished Ys Book II last night". So to this day I say "finished". I've even heard some people around the schoolyard say "solved". Which sounds alright for something like Adventures of Lolo, or Legend of Zelda, but sounds funny for "I solved Gradius III yesterday".

In Japan, when they finish an arcade game with one credit, they say "1 COIN CLEAR" , and I've seen guys on the Neo Geo forums say "I can 1CC Fatal Fury 2 on hard" I've never heard "clear" used outside of that, like "I can clear Castlevania without any powerups".

Most people here seem to "beat" games, what about you? Have you ever heard anything I didn't mention?

I always say that I finish games. But mainly that's because a) Saying "beat a game" just sounds weird to me, and b) I hardly ever "beat" a game (i.e., get the good ending, do 100%, etc.) but I do make it to the end, so I just say that I finished it.

I finish. I actually don't really know anyone that talks about completing a game, so I'm not sure what my friends say. They're too busy COLLECTING (or getting drunk). :P And I definitely have never heard of anyone saying "solved" before!

Never thought much about it, but I think I "beat" games that can be completed in one sitting: Contra, R-Type, etc.

I "finish" games that take longer, RPGs and the such.

Oddly enough, you could also say you "beat" games with a good deal of replay value.

"I beat Mike Tyson's Punch Out last night!"
or
"I finished Final Fantasy 6 last night.)

I dunno if this is wierd, but I use both words, and it's based on what kind of game it is. I would say I beat SMB, but I finished FF VII. Really long games are finished, like RPGs, GTA, etc. Shorter games that are meant to be played through in one or two sittings are "beaten".

Incidentally, when I was a kid growing up in the golden age of the NES, the common term was "Pass". "I passed Kid Icarus last night for the first time."

That sounds wierd though.

Now there's another thing I want you to remember. I don't want to get any messages saying that we are finishing our games. We're not finishing anything. Let the Hun do that. We are advancing constantly and we're not interested in finishing anything except the enemy. We're going to hold onto him by the nose and we're going to beat him in the ass. We're going to beat the hell out of him all the time and we're going to go through him like crap through a goose!

Cheers,
Ben

It depends on the contwext i am going to use it in.
But 99.9% of the tim i will say i beat the game.

I recently beat Gungrave Overdose.
I have beaten Revolution-X alot.

I have a beat list. A finish(ed) list would sound strange.

One exception is:
I want to finish the game.
I normally say that when i am talking about a longer game.
But even then sometimes i say beat.

I usually say beat, though I used beat and finish interchangibly. It depends on how long it takes me to complete the game; if it's short I say beat, if it takes a while I say finish.

Though I did finally "beat" Super Mario RPG, and it took me quite a while...

I also usually say that I beat games, unless I did exceptionally well. Then I say that I "obliterated" them, in that case. I just like that word! OBLITERATE BATTLETOADS!!! RAAAAAAARRRRRRRR!!!!

I usually say I beat a game if I make it to the end. I say I finish a game when the game has side quests or hidden levels/bonuses and then the game is "finished". :)

I tend to use 'beat' more than other words, but like other posters, it really depends on the circumstances. Long games (such as RPGs) are 'completed.' Every else is 'beat.'

but if it's a game like contra or the such I said I beat it.

i use terms all the time.

See sig ;)

Anyways, I also believe that they've got two different meanings, for just finishing a game and for completing everything the game has to offer. Then you've beaten it into submission, or bested it.

"I beat Windwaker last week"

That sounds right... I think I say that.
I think I might say "Finished" if I completely finish everything in the game.

i absolutely hate the term "beat the game". What did you beat it with.....a baseball bat or a nine iron? The only thing in a video game that can be "beat" is a timed run of some sort.

I use the term "finished".

Dr. Morbis

I "wrap" games. This term stems from the fact that many older games wrap around back to the start after the ending sequence. I've got this one friend who won't touch any oldschool games except NES Ducktales. Whenever we've got a spare 30 minutes to kill, the first words out of his mouth are always "Hey! Let's wrap Ducktales!"

I love to say "solved." Its wacky, archaic charm amuses me.

Otherwise, I use different terms like "beat" and "finish" interchangably. I like using "beat" for specific challenges.... like "I finally beat {insert uber-l33t optional superboss}!" "Finish" is good for long questy games like Zelda when I feel like I've "finished" a journey.

Rev. Link

I usually say "beat" but sometimes "finish".

Sometimes, when I get 100% of everything in a game, I say I "destroyed" or "demolished" it. :)

I Finish games. It gets quite exhausting because I always play a game to the max, especially rpgs. I'll already be able to basically smash the final boss into the deep fragments of space, reality, and time, but I'll still get all the items, weapons, ect. I'm also quite adamant about unlocking everything in games. Sometimes there will be some games I just CAN NOT succeed in unlockables (Damn MANHUNT) but most of the time I go for 100%. GTA SA was a long ongoing crusade...

There is another one I started saying recently. If I start (for the first time) and finish a game in one sitting I say I "played through" it. I've been doing a lot of Genesis games lately, so I've been saying this a lot. Like yesterday I played through Truxton and Valis 3.
