View Full Version : Do 3rd party controllers ALWAYS mimic the real thing?

From what I have seen, all 3rd party controllers seem to mimic the real thing, but what I don't understand is why. I don't know how many times I've heard "I hate the XBOX controller, I wish it was like the PS2 controller..." so why hasn't some enterprising company MADE a PS2 shaped XBOX controller? It'd be easy to do. And yes, I know there are converters out there, but a LOT of people don't know where to look, or if they even exist. It doesn't matter to me because I like al 3 of the controllers now (although the yellow stick on GCN annoys me) but it just seems like an obvious move that I haven't seen anyone try.

I'd imagine there would be some copyright issues with making a PS2 controller for Xbox and vice versa.

Huh? Third party stuff always stays just different enough from the originals to skirt lawsuits. If MadKatz can make a controller modeled after the dual shock 2 for the PS2, they could make the same thing for the Xbox if they wanted.

I think the biggest issue would have to be button placement and the fact that people may bitch about controller X, but that's what they expect a controller for that system to look like. If someone made an Xbox controller that looked like a PS2 pad, I guarantee there'd be a bunch of returns from people who can't figure out why it won't work on their PS2.

Ahhh, I thought they paid sony, microsoft and nintendo to be able to make the controllers. But what do I know? Not a lot. :/

I should stop giving my "opinions" on things. I'm usually wrong.

Licensed stuff with an "offical" logo on it indicates they've paid something, but I think that just means that the product has been tested and won't blow up your console. As for design, everyone is still on their own.

Or something different alltogether, I love the Pellican joysticks. They just take the same model and stick a different cord on it.

And I also love those PS2/XB/GC joysticks. That way I'm prepaired for anything!

As much as they may try to mimic the 1st party controller, they always seem to be inferior to them.

that was a pretty creative departure from the norm.

I have a 3rd party N64 controller (I believe it's an Interact product) that was designed with only two prongs, rather than three. It certainly isn't a mimic of Nintendo's design.

Funny.....since the stock Xbox "S" controller sucks for the Grand Theft Auto games, I went out and reluctantly bought a 3rd party controller with a better D-pad and black and white buttons. What do you know? The whole freakin' controller is better!!! It's made by Intec....which sounds like a subsidary of Interac to me. Try to imagine the exact button layout of the old Xbox controller with the size of the "S". Anyways....it works beautifully.
