That carpet is really cool but it would probably get a bit nauseating after a while. One of my ambitions, after becoming a trillionaire, is to own my own arcade.

You really don't need to be a trillionaire. You just need a few grand and soem knowledge on how to fix machines and you can have a really nice one.
That guy above has a really nice arcade though. I really like the carpet/blacklights. Gives it an arcade feel and so does the change machine.

That is so cool @_@, but with todays housing market, you need to be a trillionare to afford to have a 500+ square foot area to dedicate to that, not to mention the cost of buying and repairing the games. I have to jam my stuff in my 180 sq ft garage, while leaving room for my car. God that guy is my hero!!! One wonders, if he ever lets anyone else in there, i.e. neighborhoods kids, or he just keeps it all to himself.

Wow, very impressive! I also really like the look. It gives a very classic early 80's look. One day I too will have a sweet arcade, but I will mostly have games from the late 80's to early 90's.

That right there is the golden age of Arcade Games. That is the most impressive private collection of arcade games I have ever seen, and set up in a completely awesome fashion. Early 80's arcade games were the best IMHO. I could spend months in that room and never get bored.

You guys do know that I have a 500+ square foot arcade with 20 games in it, right? I can assure you, I am not a trillionare or anywhere close to it. Most of my games cost around $200, and the electricity bill isn't much higher than it was before.

I'm probably about to sound like a huge dick, but (even though I do agree with your sentiment here) if you compare *which* games he has to yours, it's easier to draw the conclusion that he's spent more than $200 on many of them. That's not to say that stellar deals aren't out there, but there's a big difference between a row of flawless vector games and some haggard JAMMA conversions.

I have to say, that guy's lineup is what is more impressive than the volume. Every one of those cabs was a top classic title, not a beaten up Mortal Kombat to be seen.
There was a period of a few years, after the arcades died and before arcade collecting was possible, when a person could pick up 20-30 good cabs for $1000. Operators just needed them gone, they had no value to them, and most of them were working or close to working. I know a few guys with very impressive collections that built them in that period.
That period is over.
Judging from the layout there, this guy has a low grade finished basement for his arcade. I suspect most people with a house could accomplish that if they wanted to dedicate their basement to it. Well, those people with a concrete basement, anyway.

I'm sure that's been posted here before, but I can't find the thread.
The think about the "nauseating" carpet and blacklights is...before the Chuck E. Cheese revolution came along, you have to understand...that is how arcades were. Dark and dimly lit and dangerous and in their own way beautiful. If anything, there's too much blacklight going on there - it should actually be darker.
But anyway, that's the arcade I remember from my youth, back before everything became day-glo orange and yellow on the walls and before they lit the place so brightly that you could barely see the screen. I'd hate to see this guy's electricity bill too, but I'd love to spend a couple of days in there.

I would bet that light is from the camera flash, not how the room is actually lit. The place is too authentic looking to be lit that much.
What I would worry about more than light is heat. Unless he has some very high capacity A/C in there, those rooms would be unbearable in minutes with all those games on. It would be hot enough that games would start to fail pretty quickly.

I would be willing to bet that he doesn't nomally have all of the machines on. They were probably all turned on simultaneously just for the pictures.

Very few houses have the current handling capability to handle what would happen if all of those got switched on at once. The initial CRT charging draw for all those cabs would trip his main breaker for sure and possibly brown out his neighbor, if he doesn't have capacity designed for that. Once on they wouldn't draw as much current as most people here seem to think. Certainly no more than having that many small televisions on and a bunch of small fluorescent lights. The game PCBs themselves draw very little power, a 5v line, a 12v line, and one or two other in that same range.

This is what he says about his electrical setup:
"We had quad outlets installed every few feet of the gameroom, so we'd never need to use another nasty power strip! Every outlet in the room goes to one of three double-pole, double-throw wall switches so they are completely isolated when they are off (and the switches are on their own breakers). When we want to play the games, we just hit the switches and all the games come on. Hit another switch to fire up the blacklights. "
It sounds to me that, when he powers on, 1/3 of the games start up at once with every switch. Yikes. I'll switch mine on one at a time manually, thanks.

I think its bad if you don't turn an arcade machine on for a long period of time. This way he doesn't have to worry about ones he doesn't play that often.

That is the most impressive private collection of arcade games I have ever seen, and set up in a completely awesome fashion.
Sums up my view perfectly.
BTW: You don't have to be a trillionaire or even make a lot of money to do something along those lines. People forget that housing costs differ drastically based on "where" it is. You take a house costing 100k in North Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma, etc.. etc.. - And toss it in Central New Jersey, Staten Island New York, or a couple other "hot markets" and you now have yourself a 600k house.
The games themselves can be found relatively cheap and brought back to life with a little bit of time. But judging from the condition many are in, the variety on display(Sit down Star Wars, Haunted House Pinball, a bunch of others) and just the awesome theming - I'm sure this fellow is pretty well off :)

Sweeeeeeet! It looks errily like an arcade I used to frequent back in the days. It was a fairly large arcade built in one of those old sears pre-fab homes. I remember crying when they got shut down for having poker machines in the back. I was 8, and it was 5 minutes on my bike from my house. I was there on almost a daily basis.

Powering up every game (or at least 1/3 of them), every single time you want to play a game, is not the best approach to occassionally cycle less frequently used games. I prefer the occassionally cycling less frequently used games approach - it saves energy and helps avoid instant gigantic power draws. Everyone's allowed their own way, though.
