I was at a local game store and they had an Atari 2600 in an original box, except there was this red print lettering running across the front of the box that says "Promotion Only, Not For Resale".. I didn't open the box up to see what was inside, but I have never seen a 2600 box with this red print over the rest of the cover art.. Otherwise the box is the same, and the model # is listed as 2600A. The store wanted $120.00 so I passed. What's the rarity/value on this item???

(Me)This is something I would not pass up as I would of been in a bit of a shock @_@ to have found it in a store and would of snatched it up..

I've come across 10-20 of these, probably 5-6 of them boxed, and they've never been bought or sold for any more than a normal amount of money on ebay.

It seems pretty cool. Definitely worth picking up if you can manage to haggle them down to under $100. I'm sure you'd be able to.

If the local store your talking about is "The Exchange" on Howe Ave. I'd pass, they get those in fairly often. Although the package does come with some games right? So if the games that come with it are of interested then it might be worth it.

YES!! That's the store!! How in the heck did you know?? :)
They may be worth a little more than a standard Atari, but not even close to $100. All it is is a minor box variation (everything inside is the same).

mine has chrome like switches and "not for resale" engraved into the plastic.

I have one like that too, without a box. Got it at a thrift for $15.

what a steal!
i am happy with mine, because its in great condition. box looks great and i've seen plenty of crappy atari boxes. i really like the way the atari jr. was boxed. too bad they didn't do the same with the earlier models.
i wonder if there is an esimate of how many "NOT FOR RESALE" were made? i'm sure every big store that sold games were issued one. the total could be quite large. with all the new collectors coming aboard, i am glad i have my set. 8-)
