Hey folks,

I thought I'd share something I just remembered I did a couple years ago.

I own one of those Coleco mini arcades of Donkey Kong. I remember I did a cheat where you hold left (or was it up?) and turn it on and you have infinite lives with the score all screwed up. Anyone else's machine do this?

Also, in the handheld Double Dragon II (maybe it was dd1) by Tiger, if you jump kick very rapidly, you'll never get hit and it's prob the only way through level 4 to beat it.

Anyone else found cheats or quirks like this in standalones before?

Yours,
Rob

hmmm interesting. Yeah I had a couple of little thing's in Entex Space Invaders. :) I found it had a similar "counting" system where the number of shots you shoot dictates the point value of the UFO (whether it's 10, 20, or 30 points) I forget what it was but I believe it was something to the effect of 5 shots then every odd shot after, guaranteed a 30 pt UFO.

Also, if you shoot a pair of stacked invaders just as they descend, the shot will pass through the bottom invader and shoot the top one (sort of a variation on the arcade "rainbow" trick. The offshoot of this is the invaders won't shoot. So you could have a row of 4 invaders after wiping out the top and they can't shoot at all. :D

from the handheld FAQ, not really cheats but interesting all the same-
BMX Flyer (Tomy): Hold down a button while turning it on for a display test.
* Crazy Climber (Entex): Turning on the machine while holding down the Demo button will start a graphic and sound test, followed by a computer controlled demo of game play. (Always seems to be the same).
* Defender (Entex): Turning the machine on while holding down on the fire button will make it run through a quick graphics test and then put it into a demo mode. The demo mode is the same each time, however the reverse, hyperspace and smart bomb buttons are "active." (You can help/alter the demo by pressing these buttons while it is playing and thus change the normal demo pattern!) The sm art bomb button is especially effective :) Press start to end the demo.
* Donkey Kong (Coleco): Well, this isn't a test mode, rather a code... Hold down on the joystick when turning the unit on. Then, when turning the unit on, press up on the joystick. This will cause you to skip the intro. Music and the first few levels!
* Galaxian 2 (Entex): Turning the game on while holding the missile button will start the graphics test.
* Game & Watches: All Game and Watches (including the stand-ups) run a test mode when you first put the batteries in.
* Mr. Go/Mr. Do (Tomy): Will perform a display/audio test on power up.
* Q-Bert (Parker Brothers): Holding any direction on the controller when turning the unit on will cause the unit to beep. Let go of the controller, and then press any direction on the controller and different things will happen. Upper Right: High pitch test. Lower Right: Lower pitch test. Upper Left: graphics check (hold to scroll up). Lower Left: Top number check.
* Select-a-Game (Entex): Setting the game to demo mode, and holding down button #5 while turning it on. It will run through a display test with a few beeps, and then play a demo of the game in the system.
* Spiders (Entex): Turning the game on in demo mode, and the game will automatically run through a graphics test.
* Stargate (Entex): Holding all the buttons while turning the machine on will start the graphics test.
* Super Cobra (Entex): Holding the missile button while turning the unit on will start the graphics test, then game demo mode (which, by the way is different ever time!).
* Tomy 3-D games: All Tomy 3-D games do a self test when you first turn them on.
* Tron (Tomy): Turning the game on will automatically run through a short graphics test.
* Zaxxon (Coleco): Holding the fire button when you turn it on puts it into a graphics test, followed by a demo mode. Holding down on the stick when you turn it on does the graphics test only.
