What an odd game. Donkey Kong is a run & jump platform game, Donkey Kong Junior is a run & jump platform game, Donkey Kong 3 is a...shooter??

And of course the game stars...Stanley...a character that you never see again in a game?

Overall it's a nice little game, but in my opinion, not a very memorable one.

Just for fun to try and kickstart things...my high score so far is 43,300. How much bug spraying can you handle?

Granted, DK3 is weird and has nothing in common with the formula that made Donkey Kong and DK Junior so possible (a platformer that, at the time, had varying levels), but I like it nonetheless. It's probably because I'm a sick bastard who takes enjoyment in shooting gas up a monkey's ass (ooh, rhyme time!), but it was a nice change from conventional shooters like Space Invaders, Galaxian, and Galaga.

I agree with Scott in that it's not memorable, but it stands out in my mind for being the only game to ever star Stanley the Bugman. Mark my words, there will be a Stanley's Revenge released for the Revolution where years of the monkey-ass-shooting business grows maddening, so he breaks out of the DK3 machine and goes on a deadly gas-firing rampage! Then people realize that the gas smells like wild strawberries, and he prances around firing it in the faces of the cops, who bust his ass, haul him into the local jail, and is beaten to death by his cellmate, a giant ape. The end. Coming to a store near you early 2006. Starring Keanu Reeves as Stanley and Michael Clarke Duncan as the voice of the Magic Taco.

I didnt know this game existed until i saw it for Mame.

The game is not bad, but way off when we think about a Donkey kong game.

Ehh, it's mediocre in my opinion. It's worth playing, but in the end it's only worth playing to be able to say that you've played it. Enjoyable for a short while, but just doesn't hold the attention like Donkey Kong (and the sequels that still feel like DK) does.

Ok.. there is a reason why I chose this game... I thought it deserved a second chance. I actually HATED it for many many years because like some have already said, it's nothing like Donkey Kong.

Well anyway, it wasn't less than 3 years ago I came to a major paradigm shift about it. It's a friggin SHOOTER in the vein of Galaxian and Galaga! MY GOD it's so obvious yet it escaped me for the longest time. When you view it as a cartoony variation of the standard shooter (and STOP thinking of it as Donkey Kong), it all of a sudden doesn't become so bad and actually gets very fun.

These things helped solidify that in my mind.

#1. You DON'T have to shoot Donkey Kong to clear the stage! This is pretty major (or at least it was a revelation to me). For a long time I thought the game sucked because shooting Kong up the vines felt so one dimensional.

Well, you don't have to. You can clear the stage by killing all the bugs of course! Kong is just like a Boss figure that allows you to clear it faster. In the later stages it gets impossible to shoot him all the way up anyway.

Anyway, that's why I wanted to give this game a second chance. It aint about shooting Donkey Kong. It's about clearing stages of bugs! :D

call me crazy, but I actually like this game and it does get in the rotation quite often on my PC. I remember when this first came out in the arcades I was like "what the ?" I honestly don't think anyone played this one back in the day and I believe my old arcade got rid of the machine rather quickly.

It gets really hard really fast and the action is quite frantic. It's a unique shooter with some colorful graphics. Plus it's Donkey Kong and that alone makes it cool.

Not many people have played or heard of Donkey Kong 3 so it's a good choice for the MAME club.

I played Donkey Kong 3 far more in the arcades than the other DK games. There's certainly more to the prior games, yet I always found DK3 to be more fun.
