When I first saw the pictures of Donkey Kong Country, I was very disappointed with the redesign.. I didn't get it.. Why did Donkey Kong need a neck-tie? He's not Yogi the bear. And gelled hair? It looked (and still looks) pretty queer. I never had a problem with the original big-teethed Donkey Kong, he was hip. And when I first saw Diddy I thought it was some skrewed up version of Donkey Kong Jr. , but I sound found out it was some new Kong.. So where'd DK Jr. go?
Anyway, I guess my question is.. who actually prefers the newer version of Donkey Kong? Since Rare and Nintendo are split, I say Nintendo should reincarnate the original.

I agree on this as well. I don't like Rare's design of Donkey Kong. I miss the original Miyamoto idea of what Donkey Kong should look like.

I've always hated the bastardized "Rare" version of Donkey Kong. That aint DK. And I know a number of people that agree with me. Heck I just had a conversation on IRC not more than a week ago about this very subject.
Unfortunately Nintendo themselves adopted that design and that's the DK we see.
But I agree.. Bring back original Donkey Kong. Or at least give him a redesign more in spirit with the original.

i'd like to see a modernized version of the origonal as a mini game or an easter egg in another game...
i think that would be the bomb

I just remember them passing DK in DKC off as DK Jr. Cranky was supposed to be the star of the original games. I remember seeing him talk about having only three frames of animation when he was big in one of the DKC games. Yeah, I don't think anybody bought that one.

Why not? Isn't that whats true?
Didn't we have a thread about this a while ago. Where people were saying how Its actually Cranky Kong in the Atari-era games and its Donkey Kong Jr. (all grown up) that you are playing as Donkey Kong now. Thats why Diddy Kong's name isn't Donkey Kong Jr.
Either way, I don't so much mind the way RARE made Donkey Kong to be. I've always found him to be kind of cool looking.

Same here. The characters, and the overall art direction for DKC / DK64 was awesome. Rare did an excellent job of putting character into what was otherwise an ape that like to piss off bees and throw barrels at you.
But as much as I like the revision... I am a little disapointed that Nintendo has adopted it, and decided to keep it as is. I wouldn't mind seeing a few games with the "Big Dumb Ape" version (in the same style as the original arcade games), but I think the New DK fits with other Nintendo characters... only because he actually has character.
Same with Bowser. Before, he was passed off as an evil, ultra-super-mega bad ass... the "after I kick your sorry little plumbing ass, I'll roast you with fire breath and feast on your flesh... then have my way with your lady." version. Now, he's a big moron, who wants to find a new mommy for jr.

It can't be true. Nintendo characters are timeless.. They don't age. That was Rare's version.. now Rare doesn't control Donkey Kong, so Nintendo doesn't have to adopt their backgrounds.
I respect Rare's universe of characters.. They had some pretty cool ones. But I think they should stay seperate from Nintendo's.
