k, So i have a 1084 here.
Sometimes it works fine.
Then sometimes picture just CUTS after a bit.
Audio still feeds, but picture goes blank.
What the heck could be up?

Original 1084s had a cold solder issue on the flyback - do a serach around the net for the fix. It would cause the monitor to squeal and sometimes blank out (mine did it for years.. .a good swift hit on the monitor resolved it for awhile).

i had the same problem.. it was a dry (cold) solder joint. if you look at the bottom of the pcb while it's switched on (DONT TOUCH ANYTHING WITH YOUR BARE SKIN.. FREAKING HIGH VOLTAGE!) and use something to move the board around a bit, you should see a spark from one of the joints, itll just be a little blue flash, nothing to worry about, but itll locate you your joint.. turn off the monitor, unplug it, and still DONT touch anything with your bare hands.. the tube can store up to 35,000 volts.. it wont kill you, the current isnt there afaik.. but itll shock you like a motherfucker.. dont mean to scare you.. if youre careful youll be fine. and even if you do get zapped, i mean, i've been bitten several times, and im still here to talk about it.

Yeah, this is a common problem with that particular vintage of 1084. I've owned a total of three of them (including one Magnavox that is identical except for the lack of Y/C and analog RGB, and the presence of a "green-screen" switch). All of them exhibited the same symptoms - they all will intermittently go black. The 1084 I currently own will sometimes "half" go out where you can still see that the tube is on, but all you see is diagonal lines across a light black screen. The Magnavox does it less, but it just goes completely black (tube goes off).

k, i'm feeling a smidge suicidal anyway, so i'm gonna try phreak's method tonight.

Just incase... can you write out a will or something stating I can have anything computerized in your basement? I'm not sure what else you have down there, and well.. I'm sure I don't want to know either ;)

Under the right conditions it certainly could, and it should be handled accordingly. If you're going to do anything with the monitor or pcb, discharge the tube first before doing anything else.
yeah, i'm not trusting phreak's method here..i discharged the unit and dissassembled it. I can plainly see a few cracked joints. I'm just going to reflow every damned solder point on this monitor. @_@

if you can see the dry joints just resolder them.. working with a monitor switched on is always risky business.. but i've never heard of anyone being seriously injured. like i said, if you dont touch any metal, youre all cool. and i mean ANY metal.. even the shielding etc can be live under regular conditions (im not gonna explain why).

when i said the shock wont kill you i meant the stored charge, not the charge when switched on.. the charge when switched on can be nasty.

it all depends on your confidence. like i said, i've had the stored charge more than once. but i dont like doing much with them switched on.

i fixed this shit a week or two ago. heh. I saw the visibly cracked joints, so i resoldered everything on the flyback. The only problem now is that the colours occasionally flicker for about half a second. Seems to most commonly happen if i pause a genesis game. Also I get some badass interference from the bulit in speaker...on genesis only though...so it might be the jacks, as I did the audio outs on the genesis myself. Meh, it works!
