Are there any 2D fighting games for the N64 besides Killer Instinct Gold and Mortal Kombat Trilogy (both of which are first generation N64 games)?

I've seen ads for Clayfighter 63 & a 1/3, but I cannot determine if that game is a 2D or 3D fighter based on those ads.

Unfortunately, as I found out a few weeks ago, the PAL and JP versions both cost stacks of cash.

Clayfighter pretty much is a 2D fighter with 3D backgrounds

That's what it looked like to me. Thanks for the clarification.

sadly the N64 wasnt built with 2-D in mind and some developers have stated that the N64 was only slightly more powerful than the Supernes when it came to its 2-D capabilities.

also the controller was god-awful for fighting games so that did not help matters.

I agree with you on that point.

I wasn't expecting to hear about a whole lot of 2D N64 Fighters, but I was curious to know if there were any besides Killer Instinct Gold and Mortal Kombat Trilogy.

The fact that the N64 missed out on the Street Fighter Alpha series is one of the things that kept me more interested in the PS1 and Saturn systems.

Super Smash Bros. is.... isn't it? You only walk in two dimensions, but there are 3-D objects and backgrounds. I guess this sort of fits in the category of "Maybe its 2D."

Perhaps, but when I think of 2D fighting games, I think of one-on-one fighting (i.e. Samurai Shodown), with perhaps a bit of tag-team features thrown in for good measure (ala X-Men Vs. Street Fighter). Super Smash Bros. plays more like a bedlam wrestling match from what I've seen of it.

I see what you mean. Its more childish too I guess. It definitely doesn't have the same feel to it as say; Motal Kombat.

You can almost consider the Fighter's Destiny games to be 2D as well. You only had very limited in-and-out sidestepping and the action was really no different than a pure 2D fighter.

Mortal Kombat 4 wasn't ported to the N64, was it? I realise that MK4 is technically a 3D fighter, but it plays so much like old school MK3 that it might be worth mentioning.

... Not that MK4 was an especially great game. The ground combo system was terribly oversimplified and standardized for every single fighter.
