Just bought it from kubricat, hopefully it'll be here by Friday.

Anyone here a fan of the Ippo saga?

The manga is better than average I'd say. I know nothing about the game. Is it action? Sim? (Knowing nothing I'd sadly predict sim).

I love the manga, I've read scanlations up to half of volume 52. The game is really damn close to being a perfect replica of a boxing match, but still arcadey enough to be entertaining. I'd say it's more sim than action, since you can't just throw 400 punches a round like in the Fight Night games.

If you're interested in Ippo or boxing it's worth a shot. I played the first game every day for months, and from all I've read this sequel is the same thing, only with improved gameplay, better graphics, and all the new characters introduced in the manga between 2001 and 2005.

Hmm, doesn't sound too bad then. By "sim" I was supposing it might be one of those quirky Japanese games where you don't actually do any real action, just stat manage and crap. And now I vaguely remember seeing a picture or two of the first one. Seems as though this would be the one to get for a newcomer to the series.

It arrived, and it's fantastic. Improvements upon the original in every single category. I retract my previous statement; I'd recommend this game to ANYONE. The 3,800 yen price is a huge plus.

81 characters total, each with different strengths and weaknesses.

Ricardo Martinez dominates almost everyone in the game, I was taking down Middleweights like Brian Hawk within a few rounds.

Takamura is the only boxer better than Martinez, I played him against Itagaki and TKO'ed Itagaki with 6 PUNCHES.

Saeki and Karasawa are extremely fast, Miyata isn't very good at taking damage, Mashiba's flicker is very useful, Battery has a really weak body, I could go on

-Story mode crammed with cutscenes that cover nearly everything in the manga. Starts at Ippo & Miyata's 2nd spar, and goes all the way to Miyata vs. Che Jounbong (vol. 72) then ends with a special Ippo vs. Miyata (hasn't even happened yet in the manga, though it's close...probably volume 75)

-adjustable difficulty. I beat every fight in story mode in 1 day on easy, and there are a few I'm still struggling to beat on normal. And on hard, the cpu boxers behave exactly like they do in the manga.

Only downside is loadtimes, particularly when skipping story mode cutscenes. Doesn't detract from the game overall though.
