View Full Version : Castlevania - Dawn of Sorrow (DS) is so great!

While it is IMO one of the best portable games out there, I don't think it will merit it to receive Game Of The Year on multiplatforms... maybe handheld game of the year for sure.
I'll drink to that! As awesome as Nanostray was, this kinda beats it. ;)
Though, Gunstar Super Heroes has yet to be released... I'll hold off judgment.
Boss Rush record 2 minutes 23 seconds.
X_x X_x X_x
Dude, you gotta give me some tips on beating the rush in under three minutes. My record is merely a few seconds below the 4:00 line. Also, a question: I have collected the Death's Robe, RPG, Nunchakus, and the Terror Bear (heh, good joke weapon LOL ) from beating the Boss Rush as fast as I can. Are there any more prizes to be had?
MarkMan
10-09-2005, 02:56 PM
No other prizes, just a potion lol.
As for speeding through it. You have to be careful to not get hit.
I never stay and get healing orbs from a boss. That destroys your time immensely.
Also make use of your items, the super potion and the rusty tin can. If you have one of the souls(I forgot which one) but it will reverse the effect and give you a full boost if you eat the bad items.
I used Golem x 9, Black Panther, and didn't matter on the bullet soul for the most part. Use the black panther to move between rooms and only against the bosses that move around a lot. Otherwise, use the DEVIL soul. Which boosts your attack rating to rediculous numbers and will make most bosses die in a few seconds.
I equipped the Valmanway, Devil's Tunic, and minginoid(SP?) something like that... for equipment.
Valmanway is a must. The other other weapon I'd even recc closely to that is Gungner.

Thanks for the hint the other night, guys. I was able to find and beat Zephyer, and then went past the cannon freeze room to find a new area and a new encounter.
And what a joy that new area was -- a remix of Vampire Killer! \^_^/
I still have to check out the spike area to see if I can past that.

yeah I got there esterday too, and loved vampire killer, nice suprise. Also, the spike place, I asked before, but the soul you need that carrys you across, is that the skull being carries byt two skeletons that shoots the energy ball? I know theres and area with two of them...but I cant find it now, any idea where that is?
Thanks

I never did get that soul from that creature, however, you can get past the spiked area easily once you defeat the 'boss bat' and get the Flying Bat ability. That boss is inside the area with the Vampire Killer remix.

They're in the underwater area and also in that area where it plays 'vampire killer'...
Also seriously if you have the Ape Skeleton and Puppet Master already, just use that.

How do you get into the dark portal thingy? Thats the only area I have left to explore (besides the magic seal door in the middle of the map...though I'm guessing you get the seal when you go down the dark portal).

so i can fly underwater as the bat? I have this soul btw
Also I dont understand how to use both the skeleton ape and pupper master soul correctly together to get across. If someone can explain this to me.

The spiked area where the spikes are covered with water...
You fly towards the left with the bat then you land on the safe area where there is no spikes. Throw the puppet(while Skeleton ape is equipped)... and that's it.
The Dark Portal in the middle is only opened once you go in the middle area. It's kinda a branching portion of the storyline so choose how you enter that middle area in the garden wisely.
Afterwards, you will be able to get trough the dark seal at the bottom of the tower area.

I can't find any other place on the map to go besides the middle and the portal, and it still says I need a magic seal to get into the middle. What am I missing?

Have you defeated Dario yet?
Also have you defeated Paranoia(He's in the demon guest house all the way at the top left)... to gain access you need the Killer Clown, Kokaku, and some other soul I forgot.
That's the only way you can gain access to the other two areas if you've done one of those two...
Also for Devil's Tunic... I'm sorry that was a typo when I mentioned that, I meant Dracula's Tunic. lol. My mistake.

Probably not...you can just reaquire it again in new game +. As for a defensive armor, hopefully you kept orlox's or dracula's tunic, they help a lot in hard mode because the monsters hit quite hard and have more HP. Even if you sold those there's really nothing to worry about, you should be fine. I used the Three 7's armor almost the entire time in hard except for fighting death and menace.

Well, I knew I would go up aganist Dario again -- I just have'nt found him yet.
I crossed the spike area and explored the area beyond that. I have'nt finished ONE passage yet....I hope something is in it, cause I poked around the rest of the map to mop up areas and did'nt find anything else.
Hvae around 74 percent of the map explored.

Okay, to add on to my last reply -- I'm ticked. I can't find out what to do next to advance the game and I NEVER got stuck in the GBA Castlevania games.
I have the Zepher ability to stop time, as well as the double jump and the walk in water. Plus the ability to turn into a bat and the dummy doll ability. And four seals.
I have around 75 percent of the map explored. There's still the sealed transporter in the base of the tower that is locked, as well as the saled central corridor.
I've looked all over the map, and I'm SURE I've been everywhere that I had access to. The only rooms I can't get into are the ones with the three button locks on them.
Why am i stuck? What the heck am I susposed to do to advance the game? I thought this was susposed to be a open ended game....grrr.
I could use a hint or some help without spoiling anything as to where I'm susposed to go next, or if I overlooked something.

I may spoil a few things in the upcoming rant... so be warned.
Hmmmmmm... you should be prepped to enter The Pinnacle at this point... you said you "crossed the spike area"... this spike area wouldn't happen to be the spike-laden corridor that travels up and down? The one that you have to be a bat to precariously fly through? The spike area that can be reached by moving down and to the left of the Warp Room in the Cursed Clock Tower? Well, go beyond there to get into The Pinnacle, which is where Dario is located. You didn't say anything about having the soul required to enter mirrors... in case you don't know, Paranoia is located in the Demon Guest House in an area that can only be reached via a hallway from The Pinnacle loaded with many Succubi. As mentioned before, the hallway leading to Paranoia can only be reached if you have the Axe Armor, Killer Clown, and Ukoback souls. Beat him, get to Dario, and use the Paranoia soul in front of the mirror to fight Aguni. After beating him, you will find the last magic seal in the door beyond the chamber where Dario was. With the last magic seal, you should be able to get in the center room!
Lemme know if there's any details that I left out. I can sympathize with getting lost... I seriously did in Harmony of Dissonance once. :embarrassed:

Thanks Sotenga. I do VAGUALY recall that up and down spike room, now that you mention it. I guess my map is'nt showing a 'open' area, for some reason. I'll go check that out next time I play.
Also, regarding the mirrors -- you can enter them? What soul do you need to do this, and where can you get it at? What about the other souls I need to enter the Demon Guest House? Where are those obtained at?
Actually, by 'spiked area' I ment the left-right underwater passage, that I crossed by becoming a bat and then using the enhanced dummy doll abilities.

Also, regarding the mirrors -- you can enter them? What soul do you need to do this, and where can you get it at? What about the other souls I need to enter the Demon Guest House? Where are those obtained at?
I apologize if I may be repeating myself at a few points, but here's how to get to what you need.
The soul of the boss Paranoia is the one required to enter mirrors. He's found in the upper-left corner of the castle in the Demon Guest House, whose upper area can only be accessed through The Pinnacle. The door leading into the DGH's upper area is found at the end of a long hallway of Succubi (about ten of them or so). This hallway can be found adjacent to a save point located around the bottom of the Pinnacle... specifically, the save point closest to the Pinnacle's warp room.
Paranoia's room in the DGH is found on the other side of a hallway where you need to break through three walls with the Axe Armor, Killer Clown, and Ukoback bullet souls respectively. This hallway can be found on the left side of the middle of the top chandelier room in the DGH (the one with the two Malachi in it). You should be able to reach Paranoia with this direction... but he's quite the tricky bastard. Be prepared.
When fighting him, I recommend hanging out using the Bat Company soul and staying in the top-center portion of the screen to avoid his lasers. It works MOST of the time, but his lasers are fuggin' difficult to dodge. But should you beat him, you'll get his soul and you'll be able to enter mirrors. If you recall, there are quite a few mirrors all over the castle which can now be entered. Track them down if you can, as some real good stuff awaits on the other side of them, including one of the best pieces of armor in the entire game. And, of course, with the Paranoia soul, you'll be able to enter the mirror in Dario's chamber and fight Aguni, the malicious fire spirit controlling him. That fight isn't easy either, but I'll leave it to you to find the best method of attack against him. ;)

Beat it with the best ending, attempting the hard mode now. Will eventually collect all the souls. The Final Guard soul was a pain in the ass. I've heard the Peeping Eye soul is also.

I'm only at 84 percent of the map explored. Do I get the last area when I can access the transporter?
I beat Dario once before I got the mirror soul....and got the bad ending. I'm going to try to enter the mirror in his room now that I have the soul and see what happens. :)

If you want the good ending you should get those souls.
Look on your enemy list in your menu. You'll see a picture of those monsters if you've already encountered them.
You can find Killer Clown's in demon guest house.
Ukoback is in the Underwater area.
And Axe Armor is at the castle entrance and in the hidden village.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE END OF THE GAME BOSSES
I just beat paranoia, then I went and fought dario. I killed him first and got the lame ending. I then started my game back up and went back into the mirror and beat aguni. I didnt get any magic seals....I tried going into the doors over there but it wouldent let me through ??? maybe I did something wrong, but Im supposed to go to the center of the castle now.
Should I have unlocked anything yet like julius mode? Anyway I dont have the 5ht magic seal yet. Also, once I get into the center, I was told not to equip a certain item? and then beat the boss, and then fight him again with this item on? Help me out so I dont screw this up...
(Also I was lvl 54 and beat dario in about 10 seconds, but aguni was actualy pretty damn tough o.O)

The level 5 seal is in the room directly behind where you fight aguni in the mirror. Did you try to enter that room while in the mirror? That might of been the problem. The "center" of the castle is in the garden of madness, you will probably instantly notice the room if youve explored most of the map. If not, it's a little above and to the right of the teleportation room, with a slug in it. Don't worry about doing the item thing right the first time. Just walk in, get the worst ending (which unlocks julius mode) and Arkido will BLANTANTLY tell you what to do. Do that, and continue on.

MarkMan

Try using Alucard and whenever he uses a swarm of locusts use the magic attack(A Button) when they are about to hit you. You should avoid the whole swarm and if you're in the right place, hit Abbadon as well. Alternatively you can run away pretty fast from Abbadon if you need to thanks to Alucard's bat form and L jump.

Peeping eye is only hard because when you first find it you have no luck gear or the soul eater ring. It can take a while to get. The Giant Slug was the most annoying for me. You can't find any with a good attack point. I finally figured out a combo to kinda avoid getting hit.

The final two bosses before the last one were tough but as long as I kept draining the potions I was fine. The LAST boss, though, was nasty.
I had to look him up in the DoubleJump guide I just picked up today and resited looking at until him. ;) Now that I have the game beat I can read the book with a clear conciuous.
Overall, I really loved the game -- a great Castlevania game. Julis mode is going to offer some replay value. I allready checked it out a little and was pleased to hear a remix of 'Beginning', another of the classic Castlevania music.
BTW, I see two people did the music for the game. Was one of the them the girl who has done the recent Castlevania music (the GBA's, Bloodline, Lament of Innocence) while the other was a guy who did SOTN?
And also about music -- now that I have the sound room unlocked, I see 'Bloody Tears' is here as well, my all time favorite Castlevania piece. But I never heard it during the game. Where does it play?
I wish Mina had been more in the game like she was with the first one, and that game could be a little larger, but those are minor quibbles.
Thanks to everyone who offered help in the game. I'm glad I really only needed help with the game twice. :)

The last two bosses were pretty damn tough at the end but it was all about Julius for me. On Abbadon, I just whipped him to death and held the whip button down when he summoned the locusts. There's one type of formation though where the come from above, and I did his burning cross attack which RAVAGED the boss' health. Oh the final boss I pretty much did the same thing...whipped him like mad and abused that burning cross attack...did so much damage ;D.
Such a damn good game! First time I've actually gone through the "classic" castlevania style all the way through in a SOTN style title. The CVIII character switching was awesome. I think this is the best 25 bucks I've spent this whole year!

Man, Menace made a worthy final boss the first time I fought him... because he was the last guy, I wasn't going to spare any expense on healing items. I do believe I used almost every one I had in my inventory... and I STILL lost against that amalgamous bastard! Mostly because of those damn black floating sharp thingies... not to mention that Menace kept stomping/punching/trapping me against the lower-left corner. Hugeass bastard he was! Then I got a tip from the friend that the Death soul would help keeping those floating thingies off... and it DID help! I whupped his ass in a close struggle. An excellent final boss that proves that Dracula doesn't have to be the last challenge in every Castlevania, even though Aria of Sorrow and Lament of Innocence kinda proved that already. And that statement isn't even true regarding this game...
But anyway, DoS really kicks ass. Hell, I'm playing through it again (on the Hard Mode this time, realizing that I somehow didn't choose the Hard Mode when I elected for a new game the first time I beat it :embarrassed: ), and it still rules. Although I do long for a 2D linear CV title of the olden days, that's not to say I dislike the "Metroidvania" style of games. If they continue to rule so much, I can't protest too much. :D

That's because the entrance to that particular secret room is in the same room as the one you managed to access. It's actually found to the left of the large area below the stairway leading up to Dario's/Aguni's room. You'll probably have to super-jump to get up to the breakable wall in that point, no biggie.
And after getting 100% of the map, look around in the frozen area of the Abyss to find the luscious Chaos Ring, which recovers your MP at a ridiculous rate. It's almost like having infinite MP!
(And off topic, the Chaos Ring can also be found in Aria of Sorrow somewhere in the Chaotic Realm after getting 100%) ;)

Along with the fact that this is purely awesome, There is a rumour going around in Leeds via the game shops that Castlevania DS has a limited print run...
Im not sure if i believe it, but i didnt wanna take a chance so i snapped it up...
Gamestation, CeX and Playtime had sold out so I luckly got one from Virgin Megastores...
The Lady in playtime told me that a Representive for the DS stocker (Something along those lines) Mentioned that the first batch of Castlevania's is gonna be the ONLY batch...
Believe or Not Believe.... Anyone have any further info?
(I havent read the whole thread to see if anything related was on there as ive seen a few spoilers and had to quickly look away... so appologies if so...)

You need 100% souls for the Chaos Ring.
D'OH! I knew it either had to be the map or the souls... 100%, yes, but of what? My bad. :embarrassed:
So what are some of your favorite weapons and souls? The Claimh Solais is just BEAUTIFUL. I also use the Valmanway quite a bit. As for souls, Abaddon's is just way too friggin' powerful. The Imp soul can be a bit useful, as it reduces the life of some of the stronger enemies... I'm not quite sure how it works, though. Death's soul is hell on the enemeis, and it definitely helped me to beat Menace. Nine Ghost Dancer souls have helped me a lot with getting the other souls, it has. Persephone's soul is still cool with the skeleton vacuum, and if you max it out, you get a cute l'il maid to do the work for you! :D

This may help some people. A map of the game made from SCREENSHOTS! Someone on Gamefaqs found it.

Dial up, I wish you luck.
With that, I got 100% of the castle a few minutes ago (has 99.9 for about two hours until I realized I missed a save point). I'm struggling with the boss mode. The fish is pissing me off and ugly thing that's crouched over and tries to suck you up before shooting a beam. I'm trying to level up in the main game, but I'm just not doing enough damage yet. I really want the nunchucks!

I guess they had to tone it down, as the multihits that one slice gave probably made it way too overpowered... ah well. I'm sure you already know this, but a fun fact here to anyone doesn't: For some reason, the Valmanway was the original Japanese name of the Crissaegrim. No idea why they changed it to Crissaegrim in the American version.

Aw, the Nunchakus are sweet in this game. They're like the Valmanway, but with a bit of a shorter range. On the other hand, Soma swings them as fast as you can press the attack button. The Valmanway has a slight delay in this game. They're both great weapons, though. Anyway, I recommend either having nine Golem souls and the strongest weapon that Yoko could possibly make for you (I think I used the Golden Axe to sweep through it at first), or nine Lilith souls and a real damaging Bullet Soul like the Great Axe Armor or Abaddon.
Hmm... what is your current level? If you're strong enough, I recommend passing back and forth through the Abyss. I can't guarantee this, but if you kill everything from the beginning to the save point before Menace, I'm sure you'll gain a level. Maybe equip the Mothman soul to gain more points per enemy. Maybe you can skip the Iron Golem in the space part, though... but he is worth a buttload of experience. Tough to kill, though, and it can be hard to defeat him without a combination of the Imp soul and the Terror Bear weapon won in the Boss Rush.

I'm on level 56. My weapon of choice is the Japanese sword fully powered up. It's strong enough to take out the first boss in two hits. After that, it's pretty rough going.

I use the Rycuda soul constantly, get it up to lvl 9 and zap away. Gets rid of all those pesky medusa heads because it zips around like chain lightning killing everything.
