View Full Version : Best Soccer (OK, Football) Games by System?

I just commanded another soccer game thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=48461) to rise from its grave. But I had a question beyond its scope: If I wanted to pick up the best soccer game for each of the non-current-gen systems, which ones should I get? And even if it's not the "best" soccer game for the system, which is the most "arcadey" one?
And those of you from outside of the U.S. are free to read "football" for each instance of "soccer". I just didn't want to have to read the word "Madden" repeatedly in this thread.

NINTENDO WORLD CUP FOR THE NES.
The River City Ransom of soccer games, literally.

Genesis/Mega Drive: ISS Deluxe, with an honourable mention to International Sensible Soccer. ISS is more arcadey. The FIFAs are all competent too.
Master System: Probably Ultimate Soccer or World Cup USA '94, though Sensible Soccer is again worthy of a mention. Avoid the dire conversion of FIFA that was only released in Brazil.
SNES: ISS Deluxe again. But sports games are always better on the Mega Drive, right?
Amiga: Sensible Soccer all the way, even though it's not very arcadey. SWOS (Sensible World of Soccer) throws in an extremely detailed management system aswell. Lost months to that back in the day. :)

I loved World Wide Soccer 98 on the Saturn!

i'm gonna say that as good as a playable football game is, nothing out there beats a good football management game. Therefore I can especially recommend any of the Championship Manager series - especially the latest one which goes by the name Football Manager 2005
As for the console titles, i obviously haven't played them all but i hear ISS Deluxe is meant to be the best on SNES/Mega Drive, kinda the same as how Pro Evo 4 is now the best and the FIFA series is second best, same as then. Sensible Soccer on any platform is also really good fun.

I don't like soccer/football too much, nor have I spent much time with many soccer/football games. But I have spent a bit of time with Tecmo World Cup '93 and its Japanese Game Gear counterpart, Kick & Rush (mostly because of my current Sanritsu/SIMS infatuation and I've been ripping the music). It probably doesn't stand up to those other games. Maybe it's more a soccer game for people who don't like soccer...err...football...

It's a lot more arcadey, so that might be the kinda thing bargora was looking for here ;)

Saturn: FIFA 96
I dunno, I'd pick Sega Worldwide Soccer '98 over FIFA any day.

ISS Deluxe isn't from what I've read.
For some reason I like Goal! for NES, I also like the unqiue approach of Tecmo World Cup Soccer.
For Commodore 64 it would be "Micropose Soccer"
