Okay so I was looking in my local Gamestation here in UK, North-West England and it was the same old games, they had a "buy 2 get the 3rd lowest priced free" on loose carts e.g. SNES, N64, Megadrive etc
My mate wants to get back into the retrogaming so I thought id just get a couple of Mario Allstars for £3 each, and then I spotted a GEM (well, a dirty Gem ;-)) - standing up, this cart could not be seen - it was in the bottom of the two class display cases, at the very top of the case, so you couldnt see it at all from standing..
It appeared to be the Starwing Competiton Cartridge ive heard so much about!
Needless to say.. I bought the two super mario allstars.. and I got this cart (priced at 1.99 actually) for FREE
I was quite pleased.. here is a picture.

As you can see.. pretty grubby but should clean up okay.. the "NOT FOR RESALE" part of the label looks like it was ripped off :/
I believe only 2000 of these were made, and that the PAL version is much harder to find?
Ive not tried the game yet, but Internet says that its a 4 minute version of Starwing with points, displayed at the end, it was created for a special Starwing Super Weekend, and the more points you got, the better prizes you could win such as Starwing jackets and holidays?
Does anyone have a picture of the jacket or the other prizes? have any of them ever come up for auction or sale?
I've got the Starwing competition cart as well - I lucked out in an eBay auction and scored it for about $25. The one I got is near-mint, though. You can see it in this pic:

Congrats on the score! I was super excited to find mine, though I really would love the US version someday...

I remember playing in the competition and I won for my region and received a rather nice Star Fox aviator jacket. Sometime over the years, I lost the jacket :( I'd love to get it back, and to also get a copy of the competition cart.

Yeah I'm in the US. I forget exactly how I stumbled across the auction but it must've missed the usual keywords.
Yours is a great find though! In the wild and for free no less! LOL
I participated in the tournament back in the day too - I've still got the pin that they gave out to everyone who played (it's StarFox, not Starwing though), but I lost the T-Shirt that I won for getting a certain score. I was just playing it the other day and made it further than I did in the competition!

I've still got the t-shirt in pretty much mint condition. I didn't want to throw it out because I won it, but I never wore it because I thought I'd get picked on. Not sure where it is, but I'm sure I remember seeing it when I packed to move last year.

Very nice find, too bad the label's messed up though. I broke down about 5 months ago and bought a Starfox Competition cart. I was never sure if the 2000 cart number refered to the Starfox version, the Starwing version, both versions, or the combined total of the 2. I have seen the Starwing version on Ebay from time to time, and it seems to go for less money than the Starfox version, probably because it's PAL. I loved that contest; it was nice to have something based on skill rather than luck. I still have my Jacket and 13 of my pins, but thanks to my younger brother I had to replace my T-shirt.

Last time I saw a PAL one on eBay, I think it finished somewhere around £60-£70 (loose). Not bad for a free score! ;)

PAL version is worth more than the US, simply because less of them turn up and less were given out I believe.
I paid 100 GBP for my complete PAL version, which by my reckoning was a bargain too. Congrats on the find, love to know how people trade this stuff in actually... guess people in shops just hand over the money and don't give the items a proper look!

Congratulation, great find. But bad lable :/ . I own too one, but buy it cheap on eBay for years. I have not know before what this is. Just buy it, because I saw that it must be a special game. Was listed as Demo / Promo game. At this time I have never hear about a Competition from this game here in Europe.
There exist 3 PAL versions: English, French and German. Mine is the german version. :)

Im considering checking in reguarly now - they might have some more stuff like that? long shot I know, but when one of the guys was messing around underneath the case, theres like a little cupboard.
He opened the cupboard and it was really messy in there, and there was some loose SNES carts just thrown in there (presumably he was getting another 3 carts out to fill the display cabinet)
Well.. nice for my collection anyway! I cleaned it up a bit, and it looks better now, but it wont come particuarly clean.
Tested it and its working perfectly - displays the Starwing Competition logo as Ive been told.. then goes to the screen where you can change controls etc
Then you start playing and its the same as a regular Starwing. The "points" are displayed on the top left. Each level is very short, its basically a few seconds of each level then you get to the boss.
Has a timer on the top right, counts down from 4 minutes (4m00s)
After you finish you get a huge Slippy face on the screen, then it displays your score. Press a button and it goes back to the Starwing Competition logo..
Pretty cool :D
