I searched for a thread like this but didn't find anything, I figured surely there'd be one about this already.

I don't have a PS2 yet, what 2D games are available so far? (Japanese or otherwise) I know there's a few "retro-collection" games.. isn't there a new 2D Megaman game? And aren't there some modern shooter packages (Psikyo, etc) in Japan?

I'm sure someone could list them all in one post...

there's a few good 2d shooters

As you mentioned, there's the Psikyo packs but then there's also Cave's shooters (Mushihimesama, ESPGaluda, and Dodonpachi Daioujou), the PS2 port of Shienryu (which comes bundled with the craptactular sequel...it's easy to see why it was cancelled).

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head that's pure sprite lovin' on the shooter side...

there's a good number of 2d fighters available for the PS2 (not a genre that I'm really into though, sadly).

on the SRPG side, Disgaea, LaPucelle, and Phantom Brave are all 2d isometric games (well, i guess they cheat by using polygons in the battlefield..so..nevermind)

Super Bust a Move 1 and 2 are 2d, though they're pretty inferior to Puzzle Bobble 4 :(

Man, there's really not a whole lot of pure 2d games :(

Gigawing Generations

It has 2d gameplay, but I was under the impression that he wanted a totally polygon-free experience.

Well he didn't really specify but I did think Gigawing Generations was a compilation pack. Is it a new game?

Gigawing Generations is a new game.

Here's a not-so-great video of Stage 3 I did a few weeks ago (http://www.roushimsx.com/shmups/videos/Gigawing_Generations_Stage_3.avi)

Neo Contra is good, but it's a little easy. Until this thread started, I didn't really notice the lack of 2D PS2 games (robably because I never play the thing).

Alien Hominid?

I haven't played it more than 10 minutes, but am pretty sure it's mostly 2D looking.

Klonoa 2 and the Viewtiful Joe games fake a little bit of 3Dness in their environments from time to time, but are 2D games.

I can think of a bunch of good 2D games for the PSX, but PS2 though...starting to get pretty scarce, at least on this side of the Pacific.

Offhand, the only ones I can think of that nobody mentioned are Growlanser Generations, Guilty Gear and Silpheed (<which uses polygons).

the new megaman i think went to strictly side scrolling with 3d characters

I don't know why everyone keeps disrespecting XII Stag, I like it a lot, it's fun to play :/

Because it was so extremely bland and uninspired. The graphics and sounds were subpar and the gameplay gimick was a pain in the ass (on a gamepad or on an arcade stick).

Enemy patterns were uninteresting and the chaining system had been done so much better hundreds of times before. I can't think of any reason to play XII Stag unless you're really looking to burn a hole in your pocket and really HAVE to own every shmup
