View Full Version : "Enough of this crap!" The last game that you bail
After giving Pro Race Driver 2 (Codemasters) the old college try, I shelved it for awhile. I recently pulled it down and started a new file and still was not able to win the final races. The physics are that weird Codemasters style, the AI makes ZERO mistakes and you never seem to gain on them even if you drive flawlessly. You have to wait for them to wipeout. So with much swearing I packed it up and traded it for Burnout 3, which is a much more fun game. LOL
I know that we all bail out on games from time to time, and misery loves company, so what was the last game that you finally gave up on and said "enough is enough"......and why? Maybe you can save us the pain of playing it!! LOL

The last one I bailed out on was Return to Castle Wolfenstein for the Xbox. I got to the point were you meet up with the first "Uber Soldat" and kept getting my ass handed to me. Resorting to the 'net to get some strategy, all I found was suggestions to use weapons/devices that I had used up before I saved my game, with no replenishments anywhere in sight. I suppose some day I could restart the whole level and hope to "do it right", but for now it looks much better sitting on the shelf collecting dust.

I guess it would have to be Contra on the NES. A little while ago, I swore to myself that I would beat it. I worked on it for a while, and eventually gave up. It was consuming too much of my time.
Great......I actually started Wolfenstein on my Xbox last week!!! I'll try not to waste the heavy ammo on regular enemies.

Castlevania Lament of Innocence. Not too difficult or anything, but the level designs are boring as hell.
Heh- just got done talking to Beowulf XXIV about this...
Ape Escape 2 (PS2): starts out nice & easy, like a kids' game difficulty, going alone fine, enjoying myself, unlocking tons of stuff.
About 4/5 the way through, near the end of a space-age (moonbase?) stage, there's a set of retracting or sloping stairs to climb around the outside of a tower. After about a dozen tries, I got past them & shortly after came upon some horizontal rotating-cylinder type thing you have to jump onto (& STAY ON briefly) to get by. I kept slipping off, & after numerous attempts I gave up & vowed NEVER to play or even touch it again- & I haven't. I was THAT mad!
I couldn't advise not giving the game a try, though. It's pretty fun for the most part, up until that part.

Memorization is the key to Contra success. First time i beat it it took me 17 hours. Damn it's rewarding though.
Anyways for me the last thing i bailed on was actually Contra: Shattered Soldier. It's just too damn hard to get the S rank on all 4 starting missions.

I put away Madden 2006 last week. It just feels like it's the same game, year after year. And because I'm the 49ers, I can't really make any big plays, like throwing the ball downfield as I have done in past versions.

It was either Contra: SS, Lunar: SSSC, or Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced. They were not fun, boring, and ridiculously easy, respectively.
I hate Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the NES. It's one of those games that are just plain bad.... but I felt like it was taunting me, as if saying, "Haha! You can't conquer me!" Anyway, I set forth to do just that. I got to the sixth board, which I believe to be the final one. Man, that is HARD! The rest of the game is pretty lame and easy, but six on the other hand... eesh...
I finally just got sick of playing the game and haven't played it since. Damn game.

I haven't played Driv3r for about a year. I got stuck on the mission where you have to chase the woman (Catalina?) in your car. I always got to the exact same spot then she suddenly sped off. That one mission is what made me hate the game. I'm probably one of the few who thought it was quite good. I never experienced any of the bugs with it.

I think I'm about to call it quits on Xanadu Next for NGage. I got past the first boss, but now all the standard enemies took a huge leap in difficulty and leveling is too frustrating. Its too easy to get killed and you can only save in town.
Before that, Murakumo for Xbox. The controls are bad enough out in the open, but there is a level that makes you are fly at warp speed thorough this tiny little tunnel. Just staying off the walls is pretty much impossible, but they also expect you to shoot at a guy you chase with the worst targeting imaginable at the same time. I really hate this game.
Also, Sentinel Returns for PS1 didn't last long. I never got stuck, but after about 3 levels, I reallized that the game wasn't fun, and it had hundreds of levels. Not a good combo.
Finally, Cookies and Cream. I didn't give up at the last level, but my wife did. And trying to play it with only one player is an excercise in futility.

While I beat Red Faction (PS2) on Normal difficulty, when I went back to try to beat it on Hard difficulty, it just stopped being fun for me. This was probably because I had the auto-aim turned off. Nevertheless, it sits on the shelf these days. I was actually thinking about going back sometime last week, but...nah.
Basically, I got tired of trying to line up shots against enemy guards who danced back and forth like space invader meth freaks.

I took Resident Evil: Zero Hour for GCN back to the rental place the night I got it. Its bogus seeing your knife go right through the zombie models and it not score a hit. Star Ocean for the PS2. It's the first Star Ocean game I've played, and maybe I just don't get it, but as it stands, it's a lot different to any other Jap RPG I've played and the storyline is dragging badly. It sucks, because I really want to like it, but I just can't! Grrr...

Aquaman for the Xbox. I got it new for $6.00, and I was determined to play it for a while. I sat down with it, and beat the first 5 or so levels... and then realized that not just was it not a fun game, but that I could be much more productive spending my time playing a game that was... I don't know... playable?
Thus ended my playing of Aquaman.

Madden 2005. I love the NFL, and love a great football game. This was not it. I've become so completely annoyed by the A.I. in these Madden games that just thinking about it raises my blood pressure. Nothing's more frustrating than playing in a nice, well-fought game, only to have something miraculous occur and completely screw things up. I'm sure some of you know what I mean: suddenly a team that hasn't moved the ball all game runs the offense like a well-oiled machine. Remember your defense that was having such a great game? Sorry, they can't match up anymore with the comeback A.I. I can believe this sort of stuff happening every once in awhile, but practically every game?
I just picked up NFL 2K5. I'm a year late, I realize this, but anything is better than Madden's A.I.

Classic. I love it!
Ecco the Dolphin for Dreamcast (and PS2, I suppose) is a beautiful game and is part of a classic series I used to like a lot back in the Genny/Sega Cd days. It's also a game I have a deep, deep hatred for. I'm all for puzzle solving, but swimming around for hours and hours looking for whatever it is that sets off the next puzzle is NOT my idea of a good time.

I liked Driver 3, but that mission is a pain in the ass. You have to chase her in a car, then in a boat, and then in a motorcycle. It probably took me about 100 tries to beat that mission, and I got through most of the other missions within 2-3 tries.
Anyway, back to the subject, I gave up on Midnight Club 2. I got through most of the game pretty easily, but that last "boss" you have to race in every city made me so pissed I almost resorted to throwing my controller.
Before that, it was probably the new version of Shinobi. I only got a few levels in before the annoying flying enemies and annoying camera made me give up.

I just want to instigate things. I haven't ever played Katarina Damnancy.
I just remembered that I kind of tucked aside Driver 2 about a year ago after failing some stupid mission a couple dozen times. I am still open to the possibility of punishing myself further, though.
Abe's Exoddus is also in a state of unfinishedness, but I fully intend to finish it one day.
And I almost finished the first mission of X-Wing Alliance. However, that game is too good for me to play, rather than too shabby. I wouldn't want to not have a LucasArts Star Wars (Episodes 4-6) themed space shooter combat sim to look forward to playing.

This is a good topic.
I had to do this with Super Monkey Ball 2. I got tired of the "luck" levels where the only way you could beat them is to get lucky. I got stuck on the pistons level. It is the level where you have extremely small platforms to walk on and pistons shoot you way up in the air.
I also did it with Turok: Evolution for XBox. I really wanted to give the game a chance, but I circled the beginning level 5 times and still didn't know where to go.
EDIT: I forgot about Driv3r. That game looks like it would be very fun, but I get to the shooting part and I get killed every single time. It is like the second mission or something. I am pretty descent at fps games too, and the controls for walking are just like a console fps

Man do I agree with that statement. I played and played and played this game, and while I like the idea of you progressing through the levels in any order, the fact that you still have to pass every single one of the levels before you can move to the next full level drove me nuts. I would have much rather had it been that whenever you beat a certain number of levels, you could head up to the next level. So, you could still unlock a level if you had a few that you couldn't complete.
But yes, that is another one for sure.
I also did it with Turok: Evolution for XBox. I really wanted to give the game a chance, but I circled the beginning level 5 times and still didn't know where to go.
Boy do I agree with you there. I bought it for the Xbox, really wanted to like it but figured that I couldn't because of the control scheme. Someone on here said the GameCube version is better because it was originally going to be a Cube exclusive. After walking around the first level a ton in both of them and just dying, I'd agree that the level design really kills this game.

Oh man, I forgot about Katamari Damacy. I bailed on that one too. Flame me all you want, but I hate that game. Great concept, quirky story, cutscenes and graphical style, fun, if annoying, music. And then, what do they add to top off this wonderful game? The worst controls since the remote controlled car. Guh, what a waste. The thing controls like it has four wheels. There's only one surface that touches the ground. Why not true analog control? How stupid.

I picked up Star Ocean for PS2 during a Best Buy sale. I got about 2 hours in and... just stopped. It just didn't grab me. Psychonauts came out shortly thereafter and sucked all of my game time until I beat it. I keep telling myself I will give Star Ocean another try, but I haven't felt compelled to do so yet.
Prior to that I bailed on Ico on two separate occassions. I wrote about it in a thread not too long ago IIRC. I get about thirty minutes in and am practically in a coma from boredom.

I don't often quite games because they're too hard, but my most recent quit for that was Ninja Gaiden on the Box. I gave up on the first level about a year ago, but picked it up a week ago and beat the first four bosses only dieing once. I'm hooked now.
The game that I absolutely bailed on was Stuntman. I didn't really mind the load times (I read during them...), but once I got into the game, it just wasn't fun. I was on the last movie too. I just was playing the game to beat it, not to have fun. That's a problem I guess.
Ooh, I forgot (& surprised no one said?) Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter (PS2). It was a pretty playable, rather decent FPS until a mission where you have to chase after an enemy freighter leaving an asteroid. You're given 8 min (7 once you finally get to your ship & take off) to shoot down SEVERAL fast-moving zigzagging fighters that are impossible to target/hit thanks to the crappy flight controls. THEN you're supposed to catch up to the freighter, board it, & do something else I forget since I never made it there.
I requested cheat codes, downloads, ANY help I could get from fellow DPers- I learned the Xbox version has a cheat menu, but that doesnt help me...
I still would like help on it, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've beaten the game and that probably is the toughest part right there. My brother in law got stuck there too. In his case, he didn't know that you could switch weapons for the ship. By using the big missles to take out the larger, slow ships and using the weak homing shots to take out the ultra-annoying little guys this part got a bit easier. Also, if you can target a little guy waaay out, you can get a lock with a homing missle before he gets close and starts zipping around. Sadly, luck is a factor as well.

Monkey Island 4 for the PC. It pissed me off with the lack of mouse support to begin with (which oddly I didn't mind in Grim Fandango..such double standards.) Then a while into it I decided that it felt wrong and Murray the talking Skull hadn't turned up and uninstalled the bugger.
Final Fantasy X bored me to tears because the plot felt so, well, naff.

I agree.
Im very much the same I basically suck at racing games and newer RPGs "FF" not great at sports games but I love them all as long as its a GOOD game ill give it a chance ;)
The only game Genres Im truly great at are 2-D fighters ,the Silent Hill and RE games, maybe some 3-D fighters.
Most recently I completely gave up on Ninja Gaiden XB waaaay to hard for this unskilled gamer :embarrassed:
I also borrowed Driver3 from a friend who warned me that it wasnt a very good game but I dont trust him when it comes to his opinions on games about the only thing he EVER freakin plays is GTA  Anyway I should have listend to him Driver3 was a BIG let down in just about everyway.
Sure the Graphics were much better than the GTAs especially the car models but the game just feels unfinished and rushed even after all the delays.
I finally did finish the game with a couple cheats but that was cause it had some cheesy-ass difficulty in a couple of the later missions. I finally said F#%# this game I cant wait to give it back to him
Final Fantasy X bored me to tears because the plot felt so, well, naff. < YES yet another that I COMPLETELY agree with 8-)
FFX almost turned me off of the whole series for good I thought the story was soooo freakin boring and Titus? ugh man talk about your Raiden flashbacks O_O
The biggest surprise Ive had in gaming as of late is the fact that I actually bought and am currently enjoying FFX-2.
Sure it has some fruity ass characters and the story isnt all that great but the gameplay is sooo much better than what was present in FFX and the game is actually FUN at least in my opinion. Square took a chance with this one and it turned out MUCH better than I ever thought possible ;)

Steel Battalion. It sits in it's box for about six months before I find a spare ten minutes to reassemble it. I put it on for about half an hour, die on level three, and decide I can't be arsed to start again, so shove it back in the box for another six months, only to do the same again...
There are a few racing games I put on (Such as Ferrari 355 or Ducati World on DC) and don't even play it long enough to see out the first race. I keep telling myself that I am going to make an effort to play it properly, but after a matter of minutes, I end up hitting the power button.

You aren't kidding. I actually beat the normal campaign. Then I started the "Advance" campaign. Once I realized that each mission was actually a puzzle to see how much you could take advantage of the AI and how quickly you could sneak in to capture the enemy HQ (because you're always hopelessly outmatched militarily in Advance Campaign) I said screw it.
You have to accelrate for a little part at just the right time. I guess I mastered it from having to do then damn trining mission on the first Driver so many times. Driver 3's controls are touchy, but after I learned them, I find the driving to be the best out of all the "urban sandbox" games.
So does Driv3r have the same car handling as the first Driver game? I got pretty decent at Driver after a while, even if I did resort to a cheat to beat the last mission. :embarrassed:
Steel Battalion. It sits in it's box for about six months before I find a spare ten minutes to reassemble it. I put it on for about half an hour, die on level three, and decide I can't be arsed to start again, so shove it back in the box for another six months, only to do the same again...
LOL Totally me there. I'm on my third six month cycle, but this time I managed to get to level nine so far. I think I may actually beat it. After that, I go online.
Mission 9? That's a rough one. Stock in a few resupplies and play it slow. Back off to a quiet corner and call Wagonmaster if you start getting shot up--the enemies won't follow if you get a bit out of lock range. Make sure you bring a chaingun so you can shoot down enemy helicopters before they take down your resupply chopper. And as you should know, the railgun is your friend when you're up against Regal Dress VTs. Get your kills at long range. Don't go running in, guns blazing, into close combat with a platoon of Regals. Good luck!
