I'm thinking of investing in a PSP since I can't seem to convince myself that I DON'T want one. LOL I've bailed out on a GBA twice but the PSP has features that, had the GBA had them I would have kept. Movies, sharper picture and that awesome thumbpad to mention a few main ones.

To all of you that have owned yours for a time; do you play it as much as you thought you did? Knowing what you know now, would you still buy one?

Any games that you've found to be particularly stellar?

I don't play mine as much as I should considering what I spent, but I never regret the purchase. I think it's one of the coolest pieces of gaming hardware I have ever seen. As a caveat though, much of the reason why I like it so much is that it plays emulators and neat homebrew games on top of PSP UMD games. If you buy a new one, you will undoubtedly end up with a 1.52 system, which would not allow you to play homebrew games.

If the only thing I can ever do with my PSP is play emus and homebrew games without ever being able to play new UMD games, it was still $250 well spent IMHO.

I just got my PSP on the 20th and I am enjoying it a lot. Definitely get WipEout (if you are into racing games) because it has a whole lot of replayability because of the downloads. Oh yeah, emulators are great too :D

When I went to Walmart (it's even a new Walmart) to get my PSP they had like 10 1.5 version PSPs.

It's a nice system (very sexy), and it has a lot of cool features, but mine barely ever gets played. It just doesn't have that killer app yet, I would suggest getting a DS packed with Mario 64, and maybe pick up a few other games for it. The time to get a PSP will be when a rebate is available, or when GTA (or some other killer app) comes out. But, it's your decision, and you definitely would not be wrong in getting one. I prefer the path of having both, even if it is more expensive.

Heck no I hardly ever play my PSP, I own lumines, twisted metal, ridge racer, and wipeout pure, and I havent played it in a long time besdies the occasional lumines game here or there.

No huge blockbuster titles have come out that I have wanted...

I think comparing the GBA to the PSP is a pretty bad comparrison. There areren't really any similarities between the two other than the fact that they're both handhelds. That being said, just because you didn't like the GBA, it doesn't that you won't like the PSP.

Right now it's the ONLY handheld I play. People I was sitting next to on the plane to and from CGE oohed and aahed and I honestly didn't want them touching the thing but what the heck. There are only a few PSP games that I play but I do a LOT of emulator play on it. It's awesome to be able to switch from Streets of Rage 2 to Blazing Lazers to River City Ransom on the thing with that gorgeous screen.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Seconded. It's all about the emulators. I will never buy a PSP game that makes me update the firmware.

If I could go back, I'd probably wait...I only like 4 games for the system. Sure the emulators are nice, but its not enough to hold my attention for a long time. I haven't played my PSP in probably 2 months. My DS does get a fair amount of play though...I like the mix of "original" and "regular" titles the system has to offer. I really hope they start coming out with some more good PSP games soon, cause I don't like it to collect dust.

There are certian games that can occupy you for the thing for like 3 months.. It is great.. You will Love it..

I would in a heartbeat as well, and I don't even emulate on it. It's a little light on the software library right now (nothing is going to compare to owning a GBA in terms of sheer numbers), but a handfull of games and a 1gig MSDuo are more than enough to keep me from getting my work done.

I like my PSP for gaming right now, the mem cards are too Damn expensive. I like Ridge Racer and Lumines alot, yeah I know original LOL

I don't regret purchasing it I just want to see a bit more form the system. The good games will come just like DS.

Make no doubt about it, the PSP is sexy. I love mine for music, and movies on the flash drive. But I NEVER game on it. All I play (portable) is my GBA. But that will probably end as soon as I get Advanced Wars for DS. And Shogun Total War for DS, and Lunar for DS.

My only hope for gaming on the PSP is Battlefront II. And I'm only lukewarm on that.

Bottom line: I want to love my PSP, but all the games I want right now are on the DS.

EDIT: and OMG, RESIDENT EVIL!!! for the DS!! me want!

I've been doing the emulation thing on it for a while now, and I've hardly even played an actual PSP game in a couple months. I love the system, I don't feel that my money was misspent or wasted in any way.

I'd even entertain the notion of getting a second PSP to play the PSP games on so I don't have to worry about updating the firmware and ruining my superb emulation experience.

Same here... I have been playing GBA games on my DS lately for my portable gaming, that is until yesterday, since I got AW:DS yesterday that is all I have played! :D

I'll say what I have learned to say every time a thread pops up like this...

When I went to ask about the GameCube, someone pointed out that if I was going to a gaming Web site and asking there, I already had my mind made up and just needed some people to agree with me so I could feel better about it. Hell, if you came here and said, "I want to get an Action Max... should I?" you'll probably still get a ton of people saying heck yeah!

So, even though I didn't get a PSP yet, I did get a GameCube and I was very happy that I got it when I did. I would suggest that if there isn't enough that you feel like you want to play RIGHT NOW however, hold off for just a little bit... but since you really want it, I'd say go for it :)

Lumines is great, by the way.

If I knew what I had known now, I wouldn't have purchased it. Sure, it is cool and all, but just not my thing.

No question. If I had the chance to do it again I would buy two. but as the tax bucks has dried up I'll have to wait and buy it later off someone who is tired of there 1.5 system.

NeoCDPSP rocks out with its *BLEEP* out. though now I wished SNK made more then just the first two metal slugs for the Neo Geo CD system.

The emulation has kept me busy, but I've also started downloading ISOs so I can try out all the awesome recent Japanese releases. It's towards the worse end of piracy, but they're games I would purchase if they had US releases (Megaman Legends, Star Soldier, Tenchu).

It's a wonderful thing to be able to play Earthbound on the go.

There ya go....starting this thread was worth it to me. The reason I asked was that the majority of locals that I've talked to all say that they prefer the DS to the PSP at the moment. Most likely due to the lack of software in any particular genre, but I'm patient and have wide gaming tastes. I just wanted to be sure that there wasn't anything "wrong" with the system (and I'm not talking a few dead pixels).

I didn't know that there were 2 versions. So it looks like I'll be buying a newer one for the hardware upgrades since I tend to buy lots of software for my systems and scoring a used 1.5 later on for emulation.

I'll be getting LOTS of movies for mine. I was blown away by the "miniature movie theatre" quality when shown Spiderman. That's what got me wanting one, if truth be known.

Does it come with a memory card or do I buy one?

If you get one in a bundle and not used it comes with a 32MB one, not enough for emulation. But plenty for just games. Love my emulation, state save is beautiful. Plus Lumines is amazing, my second favorite puzzle games, nothing will touch Tetris.

I understand about the whole 1.5 vs 1.52 thing and how it affects emulation, but doesn't that simply mean that it'll just take some time before they finally crack 1.52 as well (and 1.53, 1.54, etc...)?

I mean it's not like the pirates are known for giving up, is it? :)

(I ask simply because I'm in no rush to get a PSP - I like waiting until closer to the middle/end of it's life cycle to get into the pirating side of things. It lets all the good stuff rise to the top so I don't have to experiment)

I have one, with a whopping two games. I was a dumb ass and had updated the firmware so no homebrew for me. I updated it to the 2.00 firmware so at least I can browse the web with it. Now would I buy it again, HELL yeah I would. Its one of the coolest pieces of hardware I've ever used. Now if they would make some GOOD games for it, I would be set. At least I can rip movies to watch on it through the memory stick.

I have been regretting my purchase for the last month or so. Like others have mentioned, it's great for emu, but it's emu, ya know?

On the other hand, my DS hasn't set idle for more than a day. Fire Emblem, Sigma Star, Meteos, Yoshi, Tiger Woods, and soon Castlevania, Lunar, and New Super Mario Bros.? Can't go wrong.

Also, I'm scared to death to even take my PSP anywhere. The thing just doesn't seem very durable and the screen scratches if you even breath on it wrong. Over vacation, I took my DS instead of my PSP and was very lucky. My wife dropped the DS onto concrete from about 5 feet up. The corner got scratched and the game popped out, but it still workes perfectly. I'm afraid that if I did that to the PSP, it would shatter into 20 pieces. But who knows?

For a different spin, I did NOT buy a PSP and do NOT regret it. Prior to launch, I had no intentions of buying one. On launch day, I started reading what people had to say about them, how sexy they were, etc etc. I was hooked. I wanted one badly. I went to EB and tried one. Neat! That night, I went home to think about it a bit more, but got sidetracked with a lead on an arcade cab. So, the next morning, instead of going out to grab that PSP, I went to pick up the arcade game.

Now, here we are months later, and I don't even think about the PSP. The initial excitement (and, dare I say, hype) has worn off. It doesn't seem like much (outside of crappy movies) has been released for it since launch, and what has been released up to this point - that interests me - is already in my collection for home consoles. Add to that the fact that I really spend most of my time with portables playing on the chair in the living room, and you've got no reason for me to need a PSP. I have Wipeout, Darkstalkers, and any of the games I'd want emulated right there at home.

On the other side of the coin, I break out the DS all the time (ironically enough, I skipped this one on launch day to go pick up an arcade game, too). While the touch gimmick may be subtle in most games, I find that the DS still offers gaming options that I can't get anywhere else. So, I support it instead.

In the end, it's up to you and it sounds like you're leaning towards getting a PSP anyway, so good for you! It sounds like the majority of owners don't regret it. But, as a non-owner, I don't regret passing on this one.

I'm glad I don't have one yet too. I do want one for Lumines, Wipeout, and Ridge Racers, but at this point will hold out for a price drop. More good games will come eventually.

But if you have the money and want one why not? I guess the other question is do you already have a PS2, Xbox and Cube?

Cheers,
Ben

I bought my PSP the day it came out and immediately received 6 games for it (came out on my birthday!). I've loved it since then and continue to love it. I have barely touched any of my other handhelds since. I've added a 512 mb memory stick, another 9 games, and about 15 movies to the mix.

My only issue right now is that the Namco Battle Collection requires 1.52. I'm not sure if I want to give up the 1.50 firmware for this or not. The 2.0 update sounds really cool and the use of a fully mobile browser would rock. Not that I do any homebrew or emu on this, but the ability to do it is nice..

Short answer, yes, I would buy a PSP again in a heartbeat!

Haven't been playing my PSP too much, but, if you can get a 1.5, then totally do it.

Emulation on that huge screen is absolutely beautiful. Having Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles, SoR, Shinobi, Mega Mans, Mario, etc, on the move? Kickass.

yes, it is out..

oh and to the guy who wants namco museum.. use the wab version changer, and ull get namco museum running on a 1.5 ! BAM

I really want one, but the price is extreme...I'm going to have to wait. To be honest, I'm afraid I'll need to get two. There are some features I'd really like to use on 2.0, and there's a shit ton of features I want to use for 1.5 (emulation!!!!). I just don't want to buy two and then have to buy a 2GB memory stick to go with it (I'll leave you to figure that out)....I'd be looking at $1000! And that's w/o buying any actual games or other accessories. I dunno...I hate to have to wait, but I'm going to have to....especially since I just made a major purchase I'm going to post about soon in an upcoming thread.

I love my PSP. I thought the movies, music, etc. were all just a bunch of fillers that Id never use. I use them all though, the whole thing is great. They could have had a better launch but Ill tell you that the thing keeps me very entertained. Im waiting for SOCOM III.
