Backing up PS1 games is as easy as putting the disc in your computer drive and using the right settings on a common program. I can whip up a quick tutorial if you'd like!

I'm sure its easy if you know what the hell you are doing or have done it before. A tutorial would be great.

I qualify for neither of these, but I just figured everything out and ripped my very first PlayStation game! Here's what I did.
You're going to need Alcohol 120%, available at alcohol-soft.com (http://www.alcohol-soft.com). Install the program (which may require a restart), open it up, and click on "Image Making Wizard" on the very top-left. That should open up this window:

All you need to worry about are the green parts. Make sure first of all, duh, that you have selected the CD drive that your disc is sitting in. Then, on the bottom, choose Play Station mode. Click Next >

Next, select the folder where you want to save the image file. Make sure you remember where you put it! For Image Name, just name it something easy to remember. In this example I'm ripping the first disc of Metal Gear Solid, so I've named my image MGS. Finally, for Image format, I chose *.mds. I really don't know if there's much of a difference between the two formats, really, but *.mds seems to work for me. Before clicking Start, close as many open programs as you have going. This is to make sure that nothing screwy happens during your rip. So close instant messenger (do you even use that anymore? I never see you), close your web browser, close anything you can. We want to make sure there are no mistakes here. Okay, now you can click Start.

The process will take a few minutes. Go check the mail if you already haven't, or do what I did and start another pot of coffee. This is my second. I'm on a deadline here, I have no idea why I'm typing this guide instead of working.
And buddabing, you're done!

This is the game successfully running on an emulator. If you want to burn a backup CD, simply click on "Image Burning Wizard" and select the ripped file (it should automatically be selected), select the CD-R drive with a blank disc in it, and burn. Done!

Sounds like theres some fatal code issues there preventing it from playing. I think that your lucky at all to get anywhere in the game. Why its only playing on your PSOne debug is funny though.
Hows the surface of the disc look? Any big scratches or anything breaking the label/top foil? That could also make the game poop out like that.
