just need 100% confirmation before i give up on finding bare knuckle 3 and a megadrive convertor to the genesis.

100% positive. I have the import GC release and it has everything they said it would. Bare Knuckle 3 is so much better that SOR 3. Takes some work to unlock evrything, but it is well worth it. You just need to leave the GC on overnight.

Does Sonic CD have the music from the original Japanese version or the U.S. version?
Also, is this game going to come out on the PS2 in Japan?

the ps2 version appears to be universal, in the sense that it detects your console's region and gives you the maching version of the game. at least, this is what i heard. the japanese copy i played seemed quite american to me.

The Japanese GC version of Gems features the Japanese Sonic CD soundtrack.

It detects what language you have the PS2 set to. If you have a japanese PS2 and have it set to english, it'll play in US mode. Change it back to Japanese and it'll play in Japanese mode.
It's both cool/nifty and a pain in the ass/annoying.
