View Full Version : Maybe we need a seperate Next Gen section for a bit?

It seems like the standard "video games" section is getting a little bit too crowded with too many things related to the upcoming Next Gen systems: PS3, XBOX 360 and Revolution.
Back when the PSP and DS were getting ready to come out, we had a seperate portable forum for a little bit to handle the overload in those areas.
I'm thinking that maybe now would be the time to do the same thing with all the Next Gen posts.
I know I'm part of the problem, I've done some Next Gen posts lately, but I think it's the hype that is surrounding the upcoming 360 launch. I mean we only have September and October, and then..BOOM! (as Madden would say) it hits. So the excitement level and anxiety level is kinda high.

Don't worry i'm sure that sooner or later it will be the topic of the Forum de Jouer.
Remember though, this is the end of the generation all this next-gen talk is to be expected.

In a word, NO.
Too many boards split things up too much. Its simple, if you're not interested in the topic, don't click on it.
Perhaps the other people, like maybe the people talking about it, may be interested in these topics as well as the usual postings?

No we should have a special section for the PS3 since it is the only real "next-gen" system worth talking about. LOL

Well, all I can say, is that If I was a retro guy with no interest at all in the new machines, then I would be kinda irritated by all the next gen crap. I would probably be of the mindset that it belongs on a non-retro forum.
But I'm extremely interested in the new machines, so I'm not that guy, but I'm sure there are quite a few that are those guys, and this is a retro forum for the most part, so I would get their point.

Hey all things become retro sooner or later right?

True enough. The last time we had a thread on what qualifies as "retro", there was a sizable contingent who would even now regard my PlayStation games (the biggest piece of my collection) as "retro". I'd say give it a few years myself, but maybe early 3D just ages quickly.

I'd say this might be a good idea for a while. Back when PSP vs. DS was the hot topic, the main video gaming forum was just getting far too bogged down with chatter about them. So just make a second forum "XBox 360 & PS3" or whatever, and once the hype settles down a bit, it can be merged back into the video gaming forum.

I think we should definetly have a seperate forum for all those lame " [ Poll ] zelda vs cloud" posts, if i wanted to see those type of posts i would go to gamefaqs.

Yeah, another vote for having its own section for the time being. There are way too many of them. I'm still intrested in it, but its nice to just have a separation.

agreed LOL
I dont think a next gen forum is necessary, but it wouldent be a bad idea either.

I don't see anything wrong with with a temporary forum. It's not like a chasm split open and swallowed the website into the depths of hell when we had one for the DS and PSP.

I think qualifying Playstation and Saturn games as Retro hasn't happened yet. But it will happen in November. I think there seems to be a pretty common that we don't think something is retro until it's 2 generations old.

God, I miss the days when people actually wanted to talk retrogaming here.
Anyway, I'll tell you my top three reasons I don't think we need a next gen form, aside from the fact that I personally don't care too much about what I've seen so far. I'm speaking just as me here, not as anything official from DP, just FYI. One reason is the board clutter, as has been mentioned. We really don't need anymore sprawl to the board.
Another reason is, at this point, much of what's out there is still speculation. Maybe this fits with my general apathy towards the next gen, but I just can't see building a whole forum around scraps of information that are still as likely to be wrong as right at this point in time.
And the third thing being I think we have enough trouble around here with people who can't talk about games without turning into drooling fanboys (see the recent Resident Evil DS thread for an example.) I really don't want to encourage that environment by opening a forum where more or less the whole point is going to be people cheerleading their company of choice.
Frankly, the last one is the big one. I can't support a next gen forum when it seems like any thread around here has the potential to become "System Wars Part 34529558" as it is.

I don't think we need a seperate forum for new systems. It will die down after the 360 is released and go up before the other next gen shit comes out. The stupid ass "vs" threads can go away though, granted I don't look at them anyway. I recall this being debated about a couple months ago. :hmm:

I'm with Capt'n Wrong on this one.
Maybe when Sony and Nintendo decide to set dates... or hell.... even give some info beyond the basic chip and videocard chip sets then we could PONDER having one. Fugedabout it until then. Its not worth that fourms time.

I am exactly the kind of retro person you just described. However, as Blackjax stated, I can just ignore the posts I don't care for. And around this time of the generational cycle, I get to do a tonne of ignoring ;)

No need for it right now. Like Capt. Wrong said its all speculation mixed with the little info we have. Maybe when more concrete facts come in we could do that, but there's no point right now.

I don't see why not. People complain about all the clutter that would be created by adding ONE topic. We can clean out the clutter in Video Game section. And just something to think about- with all this talk about how there's no more Retro gaming talk and that stuff, why don't we split Video Games in two sections? A retro and a recent. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

It seems like the standard "video games" section is getting a little bit too crowded with too many things related to the upcoming Next Gen systems: PS3, XBOX 360 and Revolution.
That's mostly because at least HALF of the new Xbox threads come from you, as you apparently have a problem using the same thread to talk about more than one aspect of the 360.

I think 80 percent of the big screen topics come from him as well. :hmm:

I love this comment.
Anyway, I like it better having one huge listing. I prefer having all the options and only clicking on what I care about. Its pretty rare that I make it to the other topics.
