Just wondering what you would classify Katamari Damacy as. Most site have it as action or puzzle, but I don't think it's any of those.

Maybe under the category "Bizzare". I mean, a game that have dildohead-shaped caratcher is very wierd.

Arcade would do well, as it has plenty of Arcade game like qualities

I would place it in the rare "WTF" gallery, alongside such classics as Stretch Panic for the PS2 and No One Can Stop Mr. Domino!!! for the PS1.

As far as I'm concerned, it's its own genre.

Remember when there was a "ladders" genre and a "maze" genre? Ok maybe not... lots of you guys are young ones. :hmm:

Katamari Damacy, is in a league of it's own. I guess puzzle is the closest genre, but honestly i think it's like the DC. It just doesn't quite fit anywhere. It's stuck in the middle.

Maze is still it's own genre as far as i'm concerned, it's just been lost in the shuffle. I still remember when platformers had actual platforms.

I consider Katamari to be a parallel to pacman. Think about it.

By namco, addictive, collecting things. Thus I'd say it's probably kinda close to the "maze" genre, but since there isn't really a maze per se mostly, it's more a "collect" game? Dunno.

It took me too long to figure out what that word was.

As for the game, I'd say puzzle. There was usually a set way you had to build your katamari to be able to reach certain parts of the level, and do so in a time efficient manner to be able to complete the level on time.

It pioneered the Lonely Rolling Star genre.

Marble Madness was clearly a puzzle game, and "bizzare" is too offensive. Rez is bizzare. KD is all about the simple pleasures of stealing and wrecking havoc. Sure it starts off with candy and dominos, but it escalates to pets, road signs and even kidnapping! Homes are ruined and bridges misplaced.

I'm pretty sure it's a sports game.

We used to do speed runs on the levels. The better you were at controlling the Katamari and the etter "lines" you had, the better the player you were, says I. Which reminds me of who always wins when you play NFL 2K. The person who can run the ball better and the control the team better. Skill and reaction time. Sports.

I predict they'll get around to invinting a real-life katamari event and put in in the Olympics before I die.
