This system is nothing short of incredible! I finally picked up a unit with some games from a fellow DP member and I could not be happier. I have never seen let alone played an AES in my life and although I have played Neo geo games in the arcade in the past, nothing can prepare you for how cool this thing really is in your home and on your TV.
For current or past Geo owners this is a broken record but I must say that of all the systems I own, the Geo is by bar the best made. Everything about this thing says “deluxe”. The console, the controllers, even that games and their cases are incredible.
The Neo Geo is by far my favorite system now; it makes my other systems look like mere toys.
2-D gaming to the MAX!!! The delicious Neo Geo.

The AES is one of the few systems I still want. I have a Neo Geo CD and enjoy it, except the fighting games; load times make them silly. Also stuck on the AES vs. MVS business and the price tag, but I'll get there (sometime after I sell a couple organs for the Xbox 360 launch).
Noe you need and RGB or Arcade Monitor and cables (highly recommened). I saw an immense difference (with Neo Geo CD), and it becomes a truer arcade experience.
Congrats!!

I’m sending this unit out for S-video and stereo out upgrade as well as an upgraded bios. It will make a hell of a difference. BUT, that’s another $100 I have to come up with after already dropping $250 on the unit and some games.

Congrats, man! Welcome to the club. I run a consolized MVS and I love it. Try Shocktroopers 2.
Anyway, if you really dig your Geo then you may enjoy spending a little time at neo-geo.com
You may already be on there though.

You can always do the cheapy way for stereo out-simply get a stereo cable that plugs into the headphone jack.
Works well enough in my experience.

hey yeah huh. I totally forgot about that.
now if only I could find a way to get S-Video out of it without modding it. I feel so bad thinking about cutting up the housing and such.

This place here (http://www.oldschoolgamer.ca/) comes highly recommended and I think that by the picture shown here they do what looks to be a good job:

As long as it’s not a hack job I think it’s only making the Geo better.

yes you can do that ! even stereo output too you just need to find X-Neo adapter made by micomsoft it costs between $75-150 ... its worth the money because it keeps your system PURE and not altered in any ways !! LOL .. plus what more its better than a modded system because if the system dies you can just use the adapter on the other aes system ! :D rather than shelling megabuck$ for professional mod job then do that again on the future systems !! good luck hope this helps ! :D

It’s funny how some look at system mods. I personally look at it as an improvement where others look at it like its being ruined. That’s ok though, I can see where some are purists. I for one like the fact that my unit can be changed to have a real S-video out; I can then use an expensive cable (I have a bunch of Tributaries Direct Connect cables that I don’t use anymore thanks to component and DVI). I also view the upgraded chipset to be a plus also, I can unlock many titles full potential.
That’s the beauty of this though, we all see things differently.

I loved my neo for the brief time i had it.. Youre probably going to plunk down some big dollars, and some big memories as well though... Great system..
Hey, you should join the neo geo boards. People on there adore the system, but be warned... That place is filled with more drama then 10 lifetime movies mashed together LOL theres jerks but everyone hates them
While I am here, may i ask what a supergun is?

Heck yeah :) thanks for the tip I'll have to look that one up.
and yeah I'm a purest I've ALWAYS wanted a neogeo AES so when I got one (really early this year) it was like....well unexplainable. just a really Uber feeling.
So "harming" it just feels like a nono at the moment. I know I'm not really harming it. but it's just how it seems to me.
As a sidenote I've been trying to get my wife to take a rather sexy yet tastful picture while holding it. But she thinks I'm crazy LOL
any advice on that ;)

To me the Neo Geo was always a holy grail of gaming. I kind of put it on the top of my gaming list, slightly above the Turbo Duo. The thing is that the Geo is a really fun system where the duo is more of a collector’s item. I want a few games for it but there are so many that I want for the Geo. That and I got an incredible deal on the system (US AES, two controllers, memory card and 8 games…for $250! How could I turn that down?)

I just got mine back from Jeff @ http://www.neobitz.com/ , I use it on a 52" tv, with now component output thanks to the NeoBitz board. If you tv can handle it go for,, huge difference. Also try to get a Phantom Conv. to play MVS games, , youll save a ton of $$ in the long run,, Enjoy! the Neo rocks!

I've seen them going for around $200 or so, recently with just the console, hookups a controller/stick and maybe a cart.

Anyone know where I can pick up a Phantom AES to MVS converter? I’ve done a few searches but only come up with forum conversations like this one.

You can get one here once they are done updating http://www.arcadeshock.com/Store_Closed.asp
I got mine from Ebay for $290 shipped but it came with Mark of the Wolves and Last Blade 2. After that I have bought like 12 more MVS games. I think its great, being excluded form SVC and MS5 is no biggie. Good luck,

I think that for the time being I’m going to let the MVS thing go. I will eventually get a Jamma and MVS setup but for now what I have is fine. Especially figuring that I can get Metal Slug 4&5 on the PS2 for $40 as well of King of fighters. I’ll also pick up Metal Slug x on the PS1 while I’m at it.

I personally don't recommend Phantom or any MVS to AES adaptor that runs on your AES, everytime I try to plug and unplug the cart+adaptor, I feel like I'm going to break the carts, I'm pretty sure in the long rung you can loosen the boards in the carts. I've also heard, though not my personaly experience, Phantom can also damage your AES slot, coincidentally you can have your slot repaired from the maker of Phantom I.
I'd just pick up a consolized MVS unit like SuperNova or Super Gun for the best arcade experience.

Whoa, them's fightin words for us turbo lovers. Grab some of the jp exclusives and then make that statement :-P .
Congrats on your purchase though. It's a strange and wonderful feeling to grab a console from the past that you've never played. It's a flood of games that you missed out on that are now tellling you their story. The Sega CD was that console for me. I never had one or played any of the games until I found a JVC X-Eye on the cheap a few months back, and now I can't get enough. The Lunars, Keio, Shining Force, and how about Sonic CD!?! The F'n best one in the whole Sonic series. I'd mention Snatcher but I have already played that, on the DUO :D

Don’t get me wrong when it comes to the Duo, it was just poorly treated here in the states. I know it was alive and fighting in Japan but importing means not only big $$ but also the dreaded translation factor. Neo Geo games are often button mashers that don’t require a bunch of text reading and even so, with a US AES it will automatically convert the text to English anyway. Duo games have much more meat to them, but on the other hand require massive amounts of translation as well. That’s something I can’t do. Trust me, if the flood of good JP games came out here in the states, I would be all over it!

While I am here, may i ask what a supergun is?
My understanding is that it is simply a means to play JAMMA-compatible arcade boards on a home TV setup rather than an actual arcade cabinet.

Aye, arcade cabinets tended to use RGB monitors. But there are legions of people who will testify to the utterly vast superiority of RGB video compared to all other forms (that is, composite, S-Video, and RF) available in common consumer setups.

I came across superguns a year or so ago. I think it is a tremendous idea. Most are meant to be JAMMA compatible, many support Neo Geo MVS as well. The good ones also have support for various other boards. They are simplay boxes that allow you to connect an arcade motherboard to a box which also has connections for your controllers, and outputs for your video and audio. I would consdier one of these slightly higher up the scale of coolness than a Neo Geo MVS consolized unit, since it is compatible with it and numerous other arcade games. It does have the downside of being the ugliest game system ever.
I've recently gone RGB. It surpasses S-Video and Composite, falls short of Component (or soon to be HDMI, I'd guess). It's only important for systems dating from the SMS to the PS1. Early systems do not support it, later systems support component. The colors are superior, and it gives a more 'arcade' feel to everything. WOuld be awesome to have a supergun attached via RGB, at home...wouldn't need quarters.
I understand that there is a component video mod for the Neo Geo AES unit. Anyone know if this mod shows any improvement over the S-Video mod?

Instead of getting a SuperGun, you could always have someone Consolize an MVS system for you. I got D-Lite to make me up a Consolized MVS 1-slot and it works great and saves space. Next to that, I'd have to buy an actual cabinet with MVS mobo in it, but we all know not all of us have the space required for that sort of thing, so the next step down will have to do for now. :)

Well there is a guy at neo-geo.com that does neo mods, Jeff Kurtz from what i under stand his work is top notch.
If you want component video on a neo. With the best, picture quality then you need the, NeoBitz video encoder also by Jeff.
His site http://www.neobitz.com
Look at this old thread i dug up component is the clear winner on the NeoGeo.
http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103180
Component will probably never beat, RBG still when your in the U.S.... component is not a bad choice :D

Now you know why I only collect AES.
I'm very into the idea of making a really killer
puzzler game for the system in the next year...
By the way: I have a ghostlop for the AES. If
you are fourtunate enough to get your hands
on one you can die a happy gamer. It is a damn
good proto and I play the heck out of it all the time! :D

kinda OT, but where did the term "supergun" (the device) come from?
Closest I could find to somewhat explaining it:
The origin of the name supergun is a bit cloudy, but it seems to be traced to a chinese company that made the devices back in the early 90's. The Japanese market has had devices like this around for a while, but it's not easy to get those, so they are not compared or discussed.
from this thread:
http://assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3944
I'm actually quite surprised Wikipedia.org has nothing about the origin of the name. Although maybe we'll see that change sometime in the near future... :)

Thanks for the link to my site and the pic. 8-) reminds me that I need to update that pic. My latest mods use a nicer looking S-Video jack.
Phnatom-1 usefulness is very Neo AES version dependent. generally, the lower the serial on your AES, the better it is likely to work with a Phantom-1. 100000 and lower, you are likely to have no issues with a Phantom whatsoever. 100000+, and you may have glitching with scaling games like Samurai Shodown, and Waku Waku 7. However, non scaling games tend to still work great. The purchase of Metal Slug 1 on MVS alone, justifies the purchase of a Phantom-1. I did that, and then went on to get Garou MOTW, and Last Blades, and more Slugs, further justifying mt Phantom-1, and I saved literally thousands.
Every AES serviced by OSG gets free Phantom-1 compatibility test, so you can know exactly what you are getting into prior to buying a Phantom-1.
FYI, OSG also offers the Neobitz component mod, featuring the same technology, licensed from NeoBitz and Jeff Kurtz.
Jeff Kurtz is the Neo specialist, and all techs who work on the Neo owe Jeff respect, and a debt of gratitude.
