Let's face it, bad language has become more frequent in videogames lately. Years ago, however, when these games were meant for "children", this rarely happened. What I am asking is when did you hear your first curse word ever in a videogame?

The earliest one I can remember is from Mega Man 7 for Super Nintendo. It's when you meet Bass before fighting Shade Man.

Bass:Damn! I was careless!

I know "damn" isn't really that bad of a curse word, but I was like 10 or 11 when I first played it and it shocked the hell outta me.

When I first played Doom on shareware, the ending text to the first scenario had some tasteful language in it as well.

Other than that, Blood for PC. I remember while I was playing it, my mom was right behind me when the main character, Caleb, decided to yell out "Son of a bitch must pay!". All I have to say is there was no end to that lecture.

Heh, I remember when I checked out this really crappy fps demo called Kingpin. Holy hell, I was never so shocked by a game before that. The language was quite over the top unlike most games that were out at the time and needless to say I played that one with headphones around the house, lol. Ugh...such a horrible game though...

I'll be back mother !##$!@!!!!

I believe the earliest curse was Q*bert. In fact, that's what I thought this thread was about.

I wonder if I was the only one who got sick of dying in Zork and tried >go f#%^ or >tell grue to suck d#%! at the prompt.

Duke Nukem 3D had a tasteful one-liner:
"I'm going to rip off your head and shit down your neck." Followed by a quick cutscene of Duke ripping off the bosses head, and hunkering down to read the daily newspaper.

pre-dating Mega Man's curese would be the appearance of "Damn" in NES Bionic Commando. That's actually how I heard about that game. Nothing about how great it was, just "Dude, there's bad words in there..... an Hitler!"

I'm with hellvin... Kingpin demo was my first taste of swearing in a game. I heard it, and said "that wasn't as cool as I thought it would be" and turned the radio back on.

Wow... I actually liked KingPin.
But, I'd go with Megaman 7 as well.

Probably Duke Nukem on shareware for me as well. On a console, FF7.

The first one that I can clearly remember is Barret saying damn in Final Fantasy 7. I was playing games long before that but can’t remember seeing anything.

The first "REAL" swear i heard in a game was shit and it happened in good ol' duke. Oddly i experienced nudity in a game before swearing.

I think it was something called Deliverence for the MAC. Big Nude Statues in the background.

Funny- I was just thinking about this a few days ago... LOL

I cant really remember back very far; I do remember Barrett saying damn & thinking it was probably a bit racy for back in '97 (I only got around to playing it last year).

I dont personally consider words like "damn", "hell" or "bitch" to be swear words, since they say them on prime time network TV. I guess when I heard "f-ck" in BloodRayne was the first time I noticed & was a bit shocked, even unsure whether I heard it or not!

BloodRayne: "What the f-ck?"
me: "What the f-ck?"

Speaking of Megaman 7 again, I just noticed something weird. In the Megaman Anniversary Collection, Bass's "damn" is censored, which I find kind of weird. In this day and age where it is more commonplace for videogame characters to curse, they censor one little word from Megaman. I guess they consider Megaman games more geared towards kids. I find that strange because the Megaman X games get pretty dark. I think we all remember the death of Zero.

Anyways, when I picked up the anniversary collection, Megaman 7 was the first one I started playing because it's the one I have the fondest memories of. When I came across that part, I was just kind of weirded out to see that they censored it.

I think most of you are forgetting that it was either Cid or Barret of FFVII that says Shit It had $ or something similar. It was near the end I belive the first time the airship was in crisis.

In the early days of PC gaming Leisure Suit Larry quickly comes to mind. I remember buying it at Egghead Software. Back then even though it was an adult themed game, nobody really cared how old you were. I bought it with no problems and I was like 13-14 at the time. Soccer moms these days...

Not the oldest examples but Sega CD games like Silpheed and Time Gal had words like shit and bitch. I remember thinking how pathetic the industry was in terms of self censorship in that tame stuff like that even stood out.

I remember how surprised I was when I'd always read Barret's dialogue in Final Fantasy VII. He swore up a storm all the time in that game. LOL

I remember playing FF7, reading Cid's dialouge and trying to figure out what words he was saying considering the censor wasn't like $%#&, it was like $#@*&+@%$^#@%#$!*%!&, I mean what the hell could he have been saying there?

Quite a few of the ones mentioned above are familiar. In certain styles of games you kind of expect it I guess more than others. I was actually shocked in Shenmue the few times there were swear words in it, mostly delivered by Gui Zhang

I'm pretty sure the first time I heard a swear in a game was from the Gold Fly in Breath of Fire 2. When you beat him, he says something along the lines of "Uhhhhh.....Damn" No period, of course- this is BOF2 we're talking about.

Needless to say, I was pretty surprised by that as a kid.
