I've always felt this is one those true gems that never got the credit is should have. I've busted out the Lynx recently to do some reviews and popped this one in last night about midnight. I was still playing about 2 AM.

There's just a small problem: I suck.

I can usually take over two sections, but then it's just crazy. Is there any strategy you guys use? Is it better to save the castle you started with or create more? I'm not looking for points, just to win, so ignore that. Also, what determines how many cannons you get? I never understood that.

I can't help yet... I recently picked this up for SNES but yet to pop it in for a try. I have never played it, but like you said, I hear its an under rated gem.

I love that game.

Basic strategy I use is to take out the red ships that light things on fire first. Once you have a fire rebuilding becomes really difficult.

Even more important than that though is not to let and ships come to shore and let out troops. If someone is getting close take them out even if red ships are still around.

Also good to know is you can kill troops by surrounding them with a wall. So if troops come to shore surround them with a wall even if they arent close to a castle as they will move or take out another castle.

One final thing is to surround some empty areas sometimes. You can put cannons in there and it will attract shots away from your castle.

Good Luck!

Rampart was one of the MAMEClub picks of the week earlier this year. I was glad to see it picked; it's always been one of my favorite games, and it's one of the arcade games I own.

Some great strategy, tips and techniques were posted in that thread; check it out!

It's seems this game is as addictive to others as it is to me. I've been playing it on Midway Arcade Treasures and loving it. Flack seems ro have covered all the bases in his thread , nice work. Everyone needs to get this game. :)

Also, what determines how many cannons you get? I never understood that.

It's how much territory you have walled in.

I just picked up Midway Arcade Treasures (PS2), and so I've become reacquainted with Rampart kicking my butt. Has anybody tried plugging in a USB mouse to see if the trackball games in MAT support it?* I didn't see anything on the box to suggest that it does.

* Yes, if I had a USB mouse, I'd check it myself.

I always build around one castle and try to build it larger and larger to accomodate more guns. I always surround as many other castles as I can, but I don't try to build big walls... just surround them enough so you'll get more guns that you can place in your main castle.

Of course, you're totally screwed when particular parts of the land won't let you build on them and when those tiny little bastards finally make it to shore. Can't build on top of them, either.

I used to love this game. I need to break it out on the SNES.

I'm not sure if this works for the Lynx version, as it's been a while, but it doesn't matter where you place the walls, the computer will fire at them. So, in the last couple of seconds, if you are not going to surround any more area, you can just drop walls anywhere, as the computer will still try to shoot those down.

If the troops land, sometimes your best bet is to drop some walls to close them in first, then work on your castle. You only have to survive a certain number of rounds to make it to the next level, and sometimes you can do that, even though you don't have much left.

Also, be smart about your cannons. Only place them when and where you need them. If you are going to have trouble replacing the wall around them (in corners and against the water), don't bother placing them there, as it will only screw you in the end. Most of the time, you don't need all the cannons you have, as it just provokes you into firing recklessly anyway.

Also, what determines how many cannons you get? I never understood that.

It's how much territory you have walled in.

You get two more cannons per round for saving the home castle, then one more cannon for each additional castle saved. assuming you have space to place them.

Don't get your cannons too close to the edges, it will make rebuilding easier.

Try to keep the ships from landing ashore as long as possible.

If you make it to the final island level GOOD LUCK!

Cheers,
Ben
