View Full Version : Anybody else's eyes get bothered by sprite-based games?

I can sit there all day playing Chaos Legion and Devil May Cry (and even some polygonal sidescrollers like Contra: Shattered Soldier), but for the last year or so lots of older games tend to wreak havoc on my eyes. I just tried to play Shienryu and I had to squint after more than a few minutes, and I haven't fared much better with games like ThunderForce IV and El Viento. It's sort of like hard/uncomfortable to focus on the screen. I'm just kind of curious, does this happen to anybody else?

(Un)Interestingly enough, it also sometimes happens at movies.

I don't have that specific problem (you're weird!), but I do get some serious fucked up new york hard core motion sickness going in games like Radiant Silvergun (stage 2 where you're flying over the blue cityscape ninja-quicklike). Anything with a slow moving foreground and super quick background totally messes with me.

Thank god for Cave's awesome ability to throw tons of slow moving large ass bullets my way. Except in Dangun...that game screws me up, too.

haha that's happened to me once or twice when I went on marathon shooter sessions, I didn't get sickness but I got so used to different layers scrolling that I could've sworn I saw a stack of Lego boxes "moving" for about ten seconds or so once I stopped playing. LOL

I have problems with my eyes, but it's not specifically with older games. I find that the more I concentrate on any particular game, the less I end up blinking, and the more screwed up my eyes are when I'm done playing.

Jet Moto 2 made me feel a bit ill on a number of levels, physically being one of them. I generally don't get motion sick from playing games, but if I'm watching a fast moving FPS, I tend to feel a bit ill after a while.

My wife gets crazy motion sickness when she watches me play games. Of course, it probably doesn't help when I'm doing Immelmans or barrel rolls in Ace Combat. :D

Anyone think this could be an issue with frame rates? I'm not really positive about it, but I thought from the items he mentioned it was a possible trend that may exist.

Have you had your eyes checked out lately? Maybe there's a background/foreground distinction problem with sprite games that you just don't notice with 3-D games because of all the depth oriented visual cues. Any problems reading for long periods or even with pc use?

Only thing I can recommend (as someone who wears glasses/contacts, not as a doctor) is be sure you pause every 15 minutes or so and stare at something that's a different distance away than your TV is. Also, try sitting a different distance away from your TV.

I don't get the sprite issues you mentioned, but I wanted to toss my cookies while trying to play Forsaken on the PSX. Unrelated but thought I'd throw up my negative experience into the mix.

My eyes aren't the greatest, but I actually find sprite based games to be easier on the eyes, most likely due to the simple coloring of the games.

I can play something like Lunar SSS for hours.

As you can see, we've covered the idea of games causing "motion sickness" symptoms quite a few times! Check these threads out:
