Hi !

I've got two NES carts. If you can check the picture (sorry, it's not really clear), I'm not sure if these are protos. Perhaps they are demos. Is there a way to find out ? I still have not played through the games :(

http://pages.infinit.net/beepbopp/PROTO.jpg

On both games, it's written :

"SAMPLE GAME PAK BY LJN"

Thanks for looking,
- Mathieu

Doesn't quite look like prototype. I would think it's the preview version that game magazines recieves for reviews. A nice piece to keep in collection

karate kid looks like the final production board, probably sent out when the game was finished and produced but the labels weren't done yet? gotcha is also on a production board but it has eproms and probably wires on the back, so i'd say gotcha is a proto but i don't think karate kid qualifies as one.

@beepbop

Glad to see you here Mathieu :-D

When you will be able to test them side by side with the released version of the Gotcha and Karate Kid then we will be 100% sure what they are.

But like they others said, good chance they are preview copy for magazines.

There value are not has high like real unreleased game (like California Raisins that was find recently) but still great find. Where did you find them ? Montreal aera ?

I also think they are preview version of the games.

I don't remember if Gotcha had wire on the back. I'll have to reopen it someday ...

@Sniper : I found them in the Montreal area. In a wierd place, but I guess it paid off to check :D I think we'll have to play through the games to see if there is any differences from the production series. Would you like to do it someday ? We could check them together ... or at the next reunion ...

As for the value, I'm not going to sell them. I'd like to make a trade but I want to be sure what kind of cart they are.

Weird place....hmmm, can i know where it is or you can to keep it "secret". Any other unusual stuff at this place ?

Sure, but i'm working on weekend with :-( , maybe will can see us friday or sunday, anyway, let me know by mail.

I understand you position, but i think the "preview copy" is probably the answer. I have Contra 3 Alien Wars "Not For Release - Demo Only", and it's exactly like the one sold in store, not a demo at all.

I wouldn't bother playing them side-by-side with their released counterparts. Karate Kid is on production ROMs...it IS the final version. And while Gotcha might have some minor code difference, I feel that if it's in a cart with a label like that, it's probably nearly identical to the final. You won't know if that one's any different until you dump the ROMs and do a file compare.

@Sniper : Maybe sunday will be fine. I'll send you an email tonight. For the place, it's in St-Chrysostome town. It's a shop that looks like a flea market. There wasn't anything else good, except a ton of SMB cart :)

@RedEye : I think you're right, but I don't have any hardware to dump Gotcha :(

Well, if you'd really like it dumped, you can send it to me. I'm dependable, and I wouldn't mind.

@beepbop

Ask to SLYDC, i'm sure he can dump it.

I've been getting NES carts dumped for three years now. If SlyDC can dump NES stuff, that's news to me.

(unless, of course, he uses an EPROM reader, in which case I'm not surprised)

@RedEye : Thanks for your help but I'll try to get through the game first. If there is no big difference between the original and this one, I'll try to get it dumped. If SlyDC can do it, it will be easier for me. Else, I might need your help. I'll keep you informed but it might take some time.

Okay, but keep in mind that requires removing the stickers. If you want to keep the stickers mint, I have an actual cart dumper.

I doubt any changes were done between those and the production version anyway. maybe minor graphic difference or different copyright date or something.

I'd love to have one just to have one. But I don't know of anything I have that's equally rare to trade for.

I completely forget about that !

We keep your proposition in mind.
