Ok,

I played SMB 2 the Lost Levels the other day on my SNES and in the game Mario and Luigi were very different. Mario had great control and grip, while luigi would slide all over the ground but he could jump very high.
My problem is that on both of my SMB 2 Japan pirate carts, Mario and Luigi are exactly the same. Is that how it is supposed to be on the FDS version?
I would think that my pirate carts are how the game really is, because I thought they were the exact same game as the one on the FDS (minus the title screen).

If anyone has the real version and can shed some light on this, that would be great.

Good catch. I checked my NES pirate (yes, NES, not Famicom) and Luigi was the same as Mario. Then, to verify, I checked the disk image of Super Mario Bros. 2 on an emulator and Luigi does in fact act here as he does on the SNES Lost Levels. Very interesting.

I would assume that the official products are correct. The official products are as Nintendo sold them, whereas the pirate ones are modified, and perhaps they didn't care enough to fully test.

On my GBA Famicom Mini version, Luigi is different than Mario.

Well I'll be damned. Thanks alot guys for the help. I don't know why the pirate isn't the same as the FDS version, considering I always thought they were the exact same game.
Very weird.

It is pretty damned odd though.. most pirates simply slap the original game code onto their own carts with a possible title screen and/or copyright removal. Oh well.. I'm still happy with my NES pirate.

Well that is one hell of an observation...I'm surprised I never noticed this before. I totally forgot Luigi controlled differently on the FDS version, as I never really used him. I know the piraters had to make some pretty weird code changes to get the fds game to run on a cart, but wtf would they take THAT out for?! Very interesting indeed.

Now, I suppose it would be good to ask now....on the pirate version do both characters control as Mario or Luigi? :)

As Mario.

Another common problem/difference with pirate SMB2J carts is that the wind doesn't work properly in the wind levels (most of the first levels in the higher worlds have wind ie: 5-1, 6-1, 7-1, etc).

Well, I don't have the official FDS game to compare it to, but both my copies of SMBJ (pirates) have the wind and it works fine. It makes you jump further and basically gives you a push from the back, right?
