I'm gonna say that it's probably gonna die off where between the end of '06 and the middle of '07.

There are a lot of great games for it and since it's going to be christmas '06 before all major consoles are released anyways, i'd say that's a safe bet. Unless all new xbox games are 360 compatible, which is what it's starting to look like, in which case it may die off sooner.

That's too bad but like I said it's not like I have all of the XBOX games the fact is I have missed alot of games that are supposed to be great, ex. Outrun 2 and Shenmue 2

Hopefully it'll last for another 2 years. Once the X-Box 360 comes out and the X-Box goes through a super price drop, I'm probably gonna buy another X-Box just so I can mod it. I'd like to put emulators and other stuff on it. Although I could just do it to my current X-Box, I don't want to screw around with it too much yet.

I've owned 2 Xbox systems. One went 2 years before dying. THe other died last night, a little over a year after owning it. Fuck you Microsoft!

I know that's not what the topic is about but I had to vent. Sorry for the highjack, carry on!

Jesus RCM you've got shitty shitty luck. My first gen modded box is still alive and well. I'd love to know what you people are doing to kill them. And all 3 of my friends who bought first gen ps2's are on their 3rd or 4th one and Sony's quality is far worse then MS, so you say fuck microsoft, i say fuck the bastards in asia using shitty manufacturing processes to build these parts, because really it's their fault, not the fault of the console designers (MS and SONY).

I think in maybe 2 years. After the ps3, 360, and revolution are out, the xbox will be basicaly done. This is good for us though, time to pick up some cheap ps2, xbox, and gc games :)

I'm not voting in the poll because you didn't give me my option. I believe the XBox is done when the PS3 comes out. Microsoft has pretty much stopped supporting the XBox, so it's dead after the XBox-360, but will continue to teeter on the edge until the PS3.

Sorry,

I guess that your "option" of the lifespan was something that didn't come to mind, how would I have known your option? I would rather keep it simple with years rather than when a system arrives

Thank You :)

good question. it depends.
if you're strictly a video game purist, then the xbox will probably take a nosedive in early '07, a year after the 360 hits shelves, and the release of the PS3. Why would M$ want to support a last-gen console in which they lose money for each system sold? Mainstream interest will drop sharply once titles stop being released.

However my console is modded, so I use it to stream movies and music, and I play all of my roms on it. It's nice b/c i don't have to worry about wearing out my older console collections. I'm planning on using my xbox for years. I plan on using my Xbox for years. There is just so much stuff it can do with little chip in there. If the 360 gets hacked, I'll move the xbox to one of the bedrooms and move the 360 into the game room.

2-3 years. I'm thinking of getting an Xbox this year, but should I just wait for Xbox 360?

I wish I knew more about this backwards compatibility issue. I keep hearing so many rumors and nothing is concrete evidence. If anyone can help me out to find out the truth, please link me, I need the info on everything Xbox 360 can do, especially compatibility.

I just got my second XBOX this week the other one died on me. If you want XBOX 360 for XBOX 360 games and you have some cash than you want 360. the backwards compatabliltiy is going to be sketchy.

I don't see any games on X360 I really want. To me they look like overglorified XBOX games. I see so much more I want with XBOX. But that's just me.
XBOX 360 looks like it can do alot but like tarheelsnipe said
with mods a standard XBOX can do pretty much the same stuff.

If you want a link on X360 info here

I voted 1 year.

I plan on picking up one last Xbox when they drop to $99 though.

heres what I posted in another thread relating to this topic:

My biggest bitch about the current state of the gaming industry is the early push for the next-gen consoles and premature killing off of perfectly able systems like Xbox and Gamecube
I also have had 2 Xboxs and Gamecubes but with M$ dropping the Xbox like a 2 dollar whore and Nintendo not giving a shit about the gamecube it shows how us THE GAMERS get pushed into buying new expensive hardware every few years in the Hope that a system will actually be supported like they were back in the day like NES,Genesis, and SNES but it rarely happens anymore.

I believe Microsoft said at E3 they they would support the original Xbox for 1 to 2 years after the 360's release. I imagine from a business standpoint that there is a point at which it would not br profitable to support it; better off to invest in the 360. I think the 360's superior online capabilities will push ahead quickly, but it's cost may slow it down at the same time.

Also I believe publishers will continue to support the Xbox long after Microsoft. We've seen this with other consoles (a few PS1 games have been released this year) and will likely be more signigficant in this generation because of a larger number of systems in circulation. Prices will also tumble on Xbox games and hardware at some point which will also likely extend the life of the 260.

1-2 years support from Microsoft, at least 3 from the games industry. It's likely that some of the best Xbox games are yet to come. Many great gamnes seeem to pop up at the end of a systems life-cycle....

Hope they surprise us with excellent backwards compatibility...

I do hope for the sake of the gamers getting 360 that M$ doesn't half-ass backwards compatibiltiy.

I will stick with Xbox and know any game i throw in will play :)

I do hope to get PS3 I see some sweet looking games coming out not to mention the fact that it is supposed to overpower 360.

Oh, but they ARE to blame. They don't design a system and draw names from a hat to see how and where it will be manufactured and assembled. They have complete control over who is manufacturing their consoles, and where, so any problems that arise are ultimately their (Microsoft and Sony's) responsibility.

Poofta!

itll be done once xbox360 comes out. and most of those games that you listed arent exclusive, so it doesnt really matter since anyone who has a current gen system can play them. ive heard it from a good source that xbox production will completely ceasee a month after 360's release.

I never worry about lifespans simply because once the official jig is up, the golden opportunities come. Everyone wants to abandon the old for the new, so there's tons of good stuff to be had for lower prices.

I dunno, I will give it about a year till it's fully done but otherwise I have no clue

games probaly will be release for it for a couple years yet, but support from MS will be maybe done in a year, than again who knows it might be longer.

Sorry if they are not all exclusive,
But these games are likely to look and play much better on XBOX :)

I buy most multiplatform games on XBOX so no problem for me :)

Easy:

Less than a year
1-2 years
2-3 years
3-4 years
4-5 years...

See how simple it is.

Microsoft has already stopped supporting the XBox. I don't think there is any new game being released by Microsoft. I thought Conker was the last one. Fable: 2 might be published but nothing new, just a rehash.

I just think that all of these new systems are going to die when the next gen systems come out. There is not much lasting power with these systems. The PS2 will last the longest becaue it has more exclusive games coming out next year, but it will probably stop around the end of 06 also.

I think one year yes of course you will have lots of cross-platform games to look forward to as long as you have either Xbox or PS2.
This time next year Microsoft will be fully behind the Xbox360.

Look at it this way thought no matter what your favorite current-gen system is it will be the perfect time to pick up mass amounts of discounted games, controllers etc for your favorite system whether it be PS2,Xbox or GC.

I plan on amassing as many PS2 and PSone games as possible within the next year before getting a new next-gen system. maybe even picking up a one last Xbox and Gamecube after they are marked down ;)

You see these are the best times for us the gamers to take advantage off all the markdowns and closeouts its when the videogame industry is in a "transition period" that us the more hardcore gamers get to benefit if done properly.

I remember hearing somewhere that Microsoft has bought their last batch of Nvidia graphic cards. Or am I just going crazy?

I'm guessing this is AFTER the 360 is released?

I voted for 1-2 years, no way that it will last any longer. Yeah the PS1 still made games way after, but the XBOX isn't PS1.

The only game that is ONE of my most anticipated games of all time that is coming for the XBOX is Half Life 2. Other than that, I personally am really not anticipating that much from that system.

most consoles live for about a year or two after their cycle has ended so I say 2 - tops. You know a console is nearing the end when it hits $99 or lower.
